A man kept driving for 3 hours and felt sleepy. Suddenly,he drove off the road into a ditch(沟). Though he wasn't 1 ,his car was stuck deep in the ditch. So the man walked to a nearby farm to ask for 2 . "Warwick can get the car out of that ditch,"said the farmer, pointing to an old mule(骡子)standing in a field. The man looked at the old mule, thinking that it was3 for it to do that.
The farmer noticed the 4 on the man's face and repeated,"Yep,old Warwick can do the job. I believe in him. "The man thought he had nothing to lose. So5 to the ditch. The farmer tied the mule to the car. Then he pulled the rope and shouted.
"Pull,Fred!Pull,Jack!Pull,Warwick!"
Soon, the mule pulled the car out of the ditch 6 .
He thanked the farmer and Warwick. But he was still 7 about how Warwick did it. So he asked,"Why did you call out all those 8 before you called Warwick?"
The farmer smiled, saying:"Old Warwick is just about blind. But as long as he believes he's part of a team,he doesn't 9 pulling and tries his best. "
Just as it is with Warwick, being in a team 10 makes us more positive, because we know we are supported all the time.
With most Chinese people speaking Mandarin,or putonghua, some local dialects, are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources(资源)Protection Project in
2015.
This project looked at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages included 103 dialects that are almost gone. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in,500 experts(专家)and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
This project has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. Now a dialect library has been built online, where people can learn dialects from over 5. 6 million recordings and over 5 million videos. At present, the project has entered into the second stage. It plans to create digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture?According to British expert Harold Palmer, dialects are the key to keeping local cultures, because they faithfully show the histories, the beliefs and the fixed ideas of an area.
Zhang Hongming, another expert, talked about the worrying situation of dialects. "For about over 10 years, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Besides, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it,the dialect might disappear. "he said.
So,not only the country but every one of us should do our bit to protect dialect culture.
There was magic in the secret garden in spring. First everything turned green. Then the green changed to colors ﹣blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. The roses﹣the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with pleasant smell.
Colin was sick and thought that he would die soon. But he watched all the changes as they happened in spring. Dickon,Colin's friend, pushed Colin on wheelchair to the garden every morning and Colin spent the day there. Sometimes he sat on the grass watching the insects. He once watched a mouse digging a hole.
One morning Dickon pushed Colin to the secret garden as usual. Mary,Colin's cousin, and Ben Weather staff, were there too. Colin said:"I want to tell you something very important. "
"I believe that there is magic in everything,"continued Colin. "Dickon knows some magic. He charms(迷住) animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There's magic in the garden, too. I'm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. Please sing 'Magic is in me!'with me. "
"Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us. "They started singing.
Then Colin tried to walk on his own. His first few step was shaky(摇晃的) and he even fell to the ground. But as he took further steps forward,he soon got used to it and was able to walk steadily. Although he was slow,he did not fall again.
"I can walk!The magic worked!'he cried.
Have you ever burped(打嗝) after a meal?Recently, scientists from Harvard University found a black hole that"burped out"the star it had"eaten".
Back in 2018,a small star was seen to be"eaten"by a black hole that is 665 million light years away from Earth. Three years later, the same black hole became active again. This time(喷出)materials of the star at half the speed of light. This event is called AT2018 hyz.
"This caught us completely by surprise —no one has ever seen anything like this before,"said Yvette Cendes,a researcher on this.
A black hole's eating of a star is called a tidal disruption event (TDE). Although TDEs happened a few times before, but the ejecting has only taken place at the same time as the eating, the speed of the materials ejected from the black hole is also unusual,as most TDE outflows travel at 10% the speed of light rather than half of it.
The team thought about the possible reasons behind the event. They first turned to the density theory(密度理论). If the density is very high around the black hole, the materials might be drawn out, causing a"burp". Another explanation was that the other TDEs happened in directions that could not be seen from Earth. So other black holes' gravity drew the materials out.
However, scientists have not yet found the true reason. But they say they will work hard on it.
