Long ago, in a small village of Wakefield lived two farmers, Harry and Peter. Harry was very bard working, while Peter was 1. Every day Harry got up early and came home late, but Peter walked around for fun.
One summer there was no rain and the crops 2. Harry thought, "I must do something to save these crops, or they shall die." With this thought in mind, he went out to find a 3 so that he could dig a canal(沟渠) to his field. He walked on and on, feeling tired and thirsty. After a 4 search, he found a river full of blue water He was very happy. He started 5 a canal to his field. When it was noon, his wife sent their daughter to bring Harry home 6 lunch. But Harry did not go. He did not want to leave his work 7. He completed his work deep at night. He was very satisfied. He went home, had a good meal and 8 into sleep.
Peter did the same. But he was not at all determined(有决心的). He also started digging a 9 to his field but he didn't have his work finished. His field did not get 10 water and all his crops died.
Harry's field would be watered when needed. He had a good harvest because of his hard work.
Do you know fish come out of eggs when they are born? After the little fish comes out of the egg, it eats the food in the egg. When it is big, it leaves the egg. It swims in the water. You can see the eyes and nose. Its ears are hidden in the head.
Spree fish eat other fish. Some fish have small mouths and teeth and they often eat plants.

Dick lived in England. One day in January he said to his wife, "I'm going to fly to New York next week because I've got some work there." "Where are you going to stay there?" his wife asked. "I don't know yet." Dick answered. "Please send me your address from there in a telegram(电报)," his wife said. "All right," Dick answered.
He flew to New York on January 31st and found a nice hotel in the center of the city. He put his things in his room and then he sent his wife a telegram. He put the address of his hotel in it.
In the evening he didn't have any work, so he went to a cinema. He came out at nine, clock and said, "Now I'm going back to my hotel and have a nice dinner."
He found a taxi and the driver said, "Where do you want to go?" But Dick didn't remember the name and address of his hotel. Of course, the driver of the taxi did not know, either.
So Dick got out and went into a post office. There he sent his wife another telegram and in it he wrote, "Please send me my address at this post office."
The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication equipment(通讯设备). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, people moved to another place. They are slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air.
Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in population at the same time.
One day in April, a special activity called "Food Street" was held on the playground at Railway NO. 1 Middle School in Xi'an. This activity was part of the English Art Festival in the school. The students in each class were divided into several groups. And each group sold different kinds of food. The students did the shopping and the cooking all by themselves. The students cooked delicious food such as fried chickens, potato chips and vegetables. They all worked hard and sold the food at low prices. The customers, who were the junior students, teachers and parents, all praised them for the nice food.
"It's really hard work," said one of the students who took part in the activity. "We must make a plan before the cooking. We must know how much we should spend on the things we need. Also, we must learn how to serve customers well."
"This activity is to give a chance to the students to develop their practical abilities," said one teacher. "What's more, the students will not only learn how to make money by their own hands, but also know the meaning of life."
Mr. Brown is a young and (success) businessman. He (live) in the countryside and he often drives his car to his office.
One day, while Mr. Brown (drive) down a street the loud music on, he saw some children running around. Suddenly, a stone (fly) to his car's door! He jumped of the car and shouted to a girl, "That's my new car and it will (cost) a lot of money to repair it!"
"I'm sorry...I didn't know what else (do)." The girl said.
With tears in her eyes, the girl pointed to a boy lying on the ground. "It's my brother." She said. "He fell out of his wheelchair and I (not lift) him up. He's too heavy for me. I just wanted to get your attention." After (hear) her words, Mr. Brown lifted the boy back into the wheelchair.
Mr. Brown keeps the dent (凹痕) to remind him not to go through life so fast, or someone will have to throw a stone at you to get your attention!
