There was an old mule(骡子). One day accidentally he fell into the farmer's well. The farmer thought for a while and said to himself that neither the well nor the old mule was important to him. So he decided to use soil to bury the old mule in the well.
Then the farmer called his neighbours and they started to put the soil into the well together. The old mule was quite afraid in the beginning. But soon one hopeful idea came to his mind - every time when a shovel(铁铲) of soil landed on his back, he would shake it off and step up!
He said these words to himself again and again, "Shake it off and step up." This way he could fight against the panic (恐慌) and encourage himself. After some time, the mule had stepped over the well's wall. Although terribly tired, he was the winner and he saved his own life. He decided to face his difficulty bravely and not to give up, and finally he won.

And a part about pickles(腌制食品) tells about a woman in Beijing. She returns to her hometown in Jilin and makes pickles for the first time for her lonely mother.
Another part shows happy moments of sons and daughters making New Year cakes after they return home from different cities to celebrate with their lonely parents in Zhejiang.

Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code(条形码)?
A small food store owner found it was difficult to keep records of the product information. In 1948; he contacted the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. Bernard Silver was interested in it and he set out to look into it. Silver and his students realized their answer in the form of ultraviolet light(紫外线),ink and a scanner(扫描仪).
The system did work at first, but it's very expensive and sometimes the system didn't work well. If the invention was to become popular in grocery stores, the problems had to be solved. Finally, Silver solved them.
The patent (专利权) for the bar code system was asked by Silver and Woodland in 1949. But the patent was not given until 1952. Although this patent was given, the system was still not popular among store owners. In 1966, the system began moving its way into more grocery stores. Logicorn developed the Universal Grocery Products Identification Number (普遍标识号) in 1970. Marsh's superstore in Troy was the first store to set up this bar code reading system. It became very popular ever since, and now it's obviously popular in all types of stores worldwide.

Pliny the Elder (老普林尼) wrote the first encyclopaedia with the help of his nephew. This work was made up of 37 books and had many subjects such as anthropology(人类学) and painting. Through the following few centuries, encyclopaedias were connected to religion (宗教). The first Christian edition appeared in 560 AD, and the first Muslim volume came to light soon after.
One of the longest encyclopaedias ever was produced in 1403 when The Yongle Encyclopaedia《永乐大典》appeared in China. It had 11,095 volumes. Most of the original work has been lost .through the centuries, and people can see less than 400 volumes today. The word "encyclopaedia" coming from Greek means "a general knowledge". It has been .in use for at least 500 years.
In the 20th century, the Encyclopaedia Britannica became the most well known western work of this type. At the same time, topical encyclopaedias became the most popular, covering different topics. At the end of the century, many publishers began to publish them in digital formats such as Compact Discs (CDs) and Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs).

As a teenager, I felt I always let people down.
Once I left home for California with my' friend Penelope. The trip wasn't easy, and there were many times I didn't feel safe. When I returned home, I was different, not so sure of myself.
I was happy to be home. But then I notice that Penelope, who was staying with us, was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I told my mom, and she replied that Penelope was a lovely girl, but no one could replace (替代) me. I pointed out, "She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been." But my mother made me realize (意识到) that even with my mistakes, I was a loved member of the family who couldn't be replaced. When I became older day by day, I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place.
Each of us holds a unique(独一无二的 ) place in the world. You are special, no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can't be.
