Some people think that all wild animals are dangerous. But in fact, very few of them will 1 a man if he leaves them alone. If you meet a lion or an elephant, I guess you will 2 away; but even a lion will avoid (躲避) a man if it is not very 3. Lions and tigers only kill and eat men when they have grown too 4 and too weak to catch their usual 5, such as deer and other small animals. If you see a wild elephant, perhaps you will be 6. However, elephants usually run away at once if yon don't attack them. Some animals get very frightened if they only smell a man, some 7 and look at him for a moment before they ran away, some take no notice at all but walk away 8 in another direction. Wild animals only attack 9 when they are afraid that people want to harm (伤害) their 10, or when the hunters shoot at them and make them angry.
One day, I was cooking with my friend Sandy in the kitchen. Suddenly, Sandy cut her finger. I went to her quickly. But to my surprise, I saw computer chips in her finger.
“Now you know my secret, you have to die!” Sandy said and picked up the knife. “No, please, Sandy. Aren't we good friends?” I shouted. But before Sandy could say anything, she fainted.
“Oh,Sandy!” I took her to hospital in a hurry. After a doctor checked her, he said, “I'm afraid we can't help her. Why don't you take her to a robot centre?”
I hurried to a robot centre. A few days later, Sandy was well. She asked, "Mary, why did you save me even after I tried to kill you?”
“Because I'm sure you are my friend. Can you tell me where you are from?”
“I'm from another planet. It's far from here. Thank you, my friend. Now I see how friendly people are on the earth.”
Two days later, a UFO came and picked her up. Since then I've never seen her.
George Stephenson was born in 1781 in a poor family. He had to start work when he was only eight. When George was fourteen,he became his father's helper. He spent a lot of time learning about engines. On holidays, he often took one engine into pieces and studied each piece carefully. Soon he became a very good worker though he could not read or write.
He began to learn the English letters when he was seventeen years old. Every day after he did twelve hours of hard work,he walked a long way to have lessons from a young teacher.
On his eighteenth birthday, he wrote his own name for the first time in his life. George invented many things in his life. The train was the greatest one among them. Today when we watch or take trains from one place to another, we will think of this great man—George Stephenson.
Why do plants grow in some places but not in others? Why does some land have so many plants growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?
To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why there are almost no trees or grass in dry deserts.
Plants must also have a place to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built (被建立) on hard land. The plants there have only the soil between the cracks of the stones to grow in.
Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food. What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won't. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.
Hello, listeners. Welcome to Henton Hospital Radio. Before our music program begins, Pm going to repeat some of our hospital rules.
The hospital can sleep 800 patients. There are 8 beds in each ward (病房). The visiting hours are in the afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30 and in the evening from 7:00 to 8:00. But remember only two visitors at a time. Sorry about that, but you can see what would happen if we didn't have these rules.
The other rules are about our time schedule. We start quite early一you might not be used to that. We wake you up at 6 o'clock, and breakfast is at 8 o'clock, hinch at noon. There's tea at 3:30 and supper is at 6 o'clock.
You can see the “No Smoking” sign—we don't allow smoking in the wards. Tm sure you understand why. However, if you do need to smoke, there are some smoking-rooms for you.
You will find the radio switch (开关)on the wall near your bed, with your own headphones, if you want to listen. Ifs our own hospital radio wishing you a quick recovery (康复).
Most of the flowers in nature are red, orange and yellow. If we have seen a black flower, it's chance in a million.
People have made a survey to colors of more than four thousand kinds of flowers and discovered that only eight of them are black.
As we know, sunlight is formed by seven different colored lights. The wavelength of each light is also different, so the quantity (量)of heat in each light is also different. Flowers, especially their petals (花瓣), are easy to be harmed by high temperature.
Black flowers can take in the light of all the wavelengths that make them dry up because of high temperature, so black flowers can hardly resist (抵抗)sunlight. But red, orange and yellow flowers can protect themselves from sunlight by reflecting (反射) the red light, orange light and yellow light, each of which has a large quantity of heat.
