Welcome to THIS IS AMERICA. I'm Faith. This Thursday is a day for families and friends to share a special holiday meal and think about what they are 1 for. We will ask some people to share their 2 memories of Thanks giving Day.
Jim Green: "I'm from Tennessee. I remember my parents were 3, so we often didn't get to have Thanksgiving together. But we always had pumpkin pies, and if we were really 4, a little bit of cream would be at the top. And it was just a wonderful day."
Ann Geiger: "I'm from Arizona. Thanksgiving is 5 for our family. Because many of our family members live around the country and we usually 6 for Thanksgiving."
Joel Smith: "I'm from Tennessee. Thanksgiving is always a 7 time for our family. Usually, on that day we would 8 a family Thanksgiving dinner. The 9 would get to play. The men would always watch a football game on TV and the women 10 food for the whole family. And that was just a really, really happy time."

Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700, London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid.
About 300 years ago, London was starting to get bigger and more and more people began to live there. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes as much as possible.
In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked near Bow Street.
Fifty years later, there were 120“Bow Street Runners”, but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So in 1829, the first Metropolitan(or London) Police Force was started with 3, 000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses. Until 1920 all the police in London were men.
Today, London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses, the pay is even better than for the others.
Many children act in TV shows. They work several hours every day, so they cannot go to regular school. How do they get their education?
In Hollywood many TV shows are made. About forty teachers give lessons for the children in the shows. They teach wherever their pupils are working. The teachers' job is very important. They are responsible for making sure that the children work only the permitted hours each week. They are also responsible for making sure that the children learn the required subjects. They make sure, too, that the children get enough rest and play, along with their education.
Child actors are required to attend classes twenty hours each week. California law says they must be taught from September to June. If they do not make much progress in school, they are not permitted to continue working in TV shows. TV children are usually good pupils, and most of their teachers like this special kind of work. Their classes are held in some wonderful places. Sometimes the “classroom” is a Mississippi riverboat. Sometimes it is the inside of a spaceship. Often the pupils become famous stars.
Amelia Earhart was born in America in 1897. As a little girl, she could climb trees and catch rats. When she was seven years old, she discovered she was interested in flying. In 1920, Amelia took a plane and knew she had to fly! Just days after that, she took her first flying lesson. Six months later, she bought her own plane!
A Life-Changing Flight On June 18th, 1928, Amelia became world-famous because she flew across the Atlantic with others as the first woman. And then she was called the “Queen of the Air”.
Making and Breaking Records Although Amelia was well-known in the flight, she never stopped practicing. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself, and later in 1935, she was the first person to fly over the Pacific from Hawaii to California by herself.
The Last Flight When her 40th birthday was coming, Amelia prepared for her biggest challenge-an around-the-world flight. On June 1, 1937, she began her 46, 671-kilometer flight. Something unlucky happened on June 29. She never came back again.
If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don't, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don't try to find your friends. Let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep up shouting or whistling. Always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don't mind that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches. Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass.
One day, a lobster(龙虾) met a hermit crab(寄居蟹)in the deep sea. They stopped (swim) and began to have a talk with each other.
The lobster (take) off his hard shell and showed his lovely and soft body. When the hermit crab saw the lobster take off the shell, felt surprised. He shouted at the lobster and wanted to stop the lobster.
"Hey!" said the crab. “ are you talking off your shell? The shell is (use) and it can protect you. Now you take off your shell. Big fish may eat you. You may also knock against a rock. Don't be silly. Please put your shell again. Or you will have to (payment) a heavy price for what you did."
“ (thank) for your reminding, hermit crab! But we take off our shells in order (grow) better. we are afraid to take off our shells, then we can't move forward in life," answered the lobster.
The hermit crab thought it over and understood what the lobster said.
