Olive oil has been a main food in the Mediterranean(地中海的)countries for thousands of years, and some olive trees that are hundreds of years old still produce fruit.
Almost everyone knows that olive oil is good for our health. But what most people may not realize is that olive oil is used for a lot more than just food. People make soap out of it, polish diamonds(钻石)with it, and burn it for light. In ancient times, olive oil was even used as weapon(武器).
These days, more and more people all over the world are discovering that olive oil may be the best oil for cooking. In the United States, people use five times(倍)more olive oil today than they did 20 years ago.
Nowadays, most of the world's olive oil is still produced in the Mediterranean countries such as America and Australia also produce it. Spain produces the most olive oil in the world, followed by Italy and Greece.
I'm Marie. I work in a nursing home (养老院) and my job is to look after the old people. Alice is one of them. She's a very nice old woman.
This year, Alice had a hard time. She went to hospital twice. In November, I finally could get her back to her home.
Alice hoped that her daughter could come to visit her on Christmas Eve because she wanted to be with her family, like the old days. But her daughter was coming after Christmas, so she was very sad. I also felt sad because she would be alone on the holiday.
On Christmas Eve, I took her to a candlelight service (烛光礼拜) at a church that night. I didn't take her to my church. Instead, I took her to the church in her old neighborhood. We got there early and I let her sit near the door, so people could see her when they came in. A few minutes later, some of her friends came to the church and they all talked to her and sat with her.
Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there. She said she loved the gift like this. That night, I thought I got the best gift: the smile on Alice's face.
Mr. Weeks is fifty years old. He's taught maths in a middle school for twenty years. He works and always comes to his office on time. He hopes his students will be honest and he is strict with them. Some of his students have become famous people, but they still remember him and often write to him. Of course the man is proud of them.
This term he began to teach Grade One. Some of the new students were told about him, but the others didn't know about him. On the first day of school he told the students how to be an honest person. He gave them some examples and said, “I don't like telling a lie.” Before class was over, he told all his students to finish Exercise 8 in Lesson 1.
The next morning, as soon as he came into the classroom, he asked,“Who's finished Exercise 8?” A few students raised their hands. He shook his head and said, “Open your workbooks and see if there's Exercise 8 in Lesson 1.”
The students had a look at their workbooks and their faces turned red at once.
E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.
We live in a society that is producing and using electronics (电子产品) all the time.It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs,mobile phones and computers for the latest models.E-waste is created when we throw away old ones.In the EU alone, about 8,700,000 tons of E-waste is produced each year.Sadly, just over 1,000,000 tons is recycled.
Burying (填埋) E-waste or burning it causes setious problems for the environment.Electronics have dangerous things in them. These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.
In recent years, ▲ .However, their plans are not always managed properly.Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people's health.Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem.E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.
Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products. This means that producers must take back old products which are no longer wanted. They should then make sure they are properly recycled or reused.
As for us,we should try to cut down on E-waste.Change electronics only when we have to.And don't buy a product just to have the latest model.
E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.

Giving gifts is a kind of knowledge, and is also one kind of strategy(策略). In the Western countries, you should be careful of giving gifts. Never give a gift in a job interview or at a business meeting. Gifts are usually given during special holidays, or as a “thank you” for special invitations. When arriving at a special party, you may give your gift to the host once the introductions are made. Here are a few rules:
Be modest (适度的) with your gift. Do not buy gifts that are too expensive, such as a Swiss watch, a gold ring or a gold necklace. A special food from your country, a bottle of wine, candy, or flowers are the best if you do not know the host very well, but be sure that your gift will not need much attention. You can usually say something like “ I hope you will like it.” when you offer your gift.
Be careful of giving wine. A bottle of wine is usually all right if you know your host drinks wine, but hard alcohol (酒精) such as whisky (威士忌) should only be given as a gift when you know the host well and are certain that they would like such a gift. Flowers are good, but remember: roses are for special love. You have to be careful.
A small cultural gift from your country is usually very good. Make sure that your gift is packed (包装) nicely. A nice card with it will be better.
Recently, many people have begun to try a new way of doing shopping through the Internet. They are very interested in it.Why is it becoming more and more popular now? There are some reasons.First, more and more people have their own computers and their computers can be joined with the Internet. So it is possible for many of them to do shopping through the Internet.Second, shopping through the Internet can save them some money and a lot of time.Third, they don't need to go to the shops themselves.Because of these good facts, few people refuse it.
On the other hand, some people don't like this new way of shopping. They are worried about the safety of shopping online.Customers(顾客)can only see the pictures of a product on the Internet. And they can't enjoy the pleasure of buying things in a large supermarket or a wonderful shopping center. These are the reasons why they do not like it.
But I think more and more people will like this new kind of shopping in the future.
The designer of the Apple Computer,Steve Jobs, was not quite successful in his early years. He was not among the best students at school, and from time to time he got into trouble with either his schoolmates or his teachers. But he was full of new ideas, which few people saw the value of them. Things remained the same when he went up to college and he dropped out halfway.
Steve Jobs worked first as a video game designer at Atari. He worked there for only a few months and then he set out to tour India. He hoped that the trip would give him more ideas and give him a change in life for the better.
After he returned from India,he began to live on a farm in California. And then,in 1975,Steve Jobs set about making a new type of computer.Along with his friend Stephen Wozniak,he designed the Apple Computer in his bedroom and built it in his garage(车库).He chose the name “Apple” because it reminded him of a happy summer he once spent on an orchard(果园)in Oregon.
His Apple Computer was so successful that Steve Jobs soon became worldwide famous. But unluckily,he died of illness in 2011.
Reading is the key to school success and, like any other skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity(自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase(短语). With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as the first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(数量) of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new that is suitable (适合)for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
