The White family came to a new big city, but Mrs. White's son, Bob, was not happy. He didn't have anyone to play with. "Don't worry!" said his mother. "You will soon make friends here."
One morning, there was a knock at the door. Bob's mother, Mrs. White, opened it. There stood a woman with brown hair. It was Mrs. Miller. She came to borrow two eggs. She wanted to make cakes. Mrs. White gave her two. In the afternoon there was another knock at the door. Mrs. White opened it and she saw a boy standing there. "My name is Jack Miller," he said. "My mother sends you this cake and the two eggs." "Well, thank you, Jack," said Mrs. White. "Come in and meet my son Bob." Look! Bob and Jack were having cake and milk. They were playing football. Now they are friends! Jack said, "I'm glad you live next door." Bob said, "I must thank your mother for coming to borrow eggs."
Jack laughed and told Bob, "My mother didn't want the two eggs, but she wanted to make friends with your mother." Bob said, "That's a funny way to make friends. It's an easy way, too. It can work!"
Two years ago, my family moved to a new city and I had to study in a new school. As I had few friends there, I felt lonely. Then I met Tony. The first time I saw him, he was standing in the centre of a group of students, telling jokes. The children around laughed from time to time. Tony knew about my problem. He asked me to play basketball with his friends and helped me with my studies. We soon became good friends.
About a year ago, however, Tony's father was killed in an accident. As a result, his family had to move into a small house. Tony changed into a different person. He became silent and he even lost his interest in studies. Several times, I invited him to go out and play basketball with me, but he refused. I wanted to help him, but I didn't know what to do.
Then something strange happened in my class. Two classmates lost the money in their schoolbags.
Last Friday, just before the P.E. lesson, I went back to the classroom to get my running shoes I would use. The door was half open, and I went in. To my astonishment, I saw Tony was searching one of my classmates' schoolbags. I was shocked.
New rules and behave our standards for middle school students came out. Middle schools are going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The following are some of the new rules.
You should not dye your hair, smoke or drink. You should not copy others' work in an exam. Don't do it again if you did it!
Good students love animals and care for other people. Being kind to animals is being kind to ourselves. Be friendly to the people around you. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone. Learn to protect yourselves. If you have to go home late, you should let your mother or your father know. Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren't good for teenagers, so try to look at web pages that are good for you.
Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10-month-old sister home alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf…I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper? Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn't the tiny flame(火苗) I'd expected, and I couldn't blow it out. I threw it on the floor, and then I got my dad's boots(靴子) and stamped it out.
But there was a huge hole left on the floor. When my mum came home later, she smelt the smoke immediately. She dropped the shopping bag, luckily for me, over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after running round the house checking for a fire, she of course picked up the bag and saw the hole. Next I was grounded(关禁闭) for months. Even worse though, the hole was still there, reminding me of what I did.
