Have you heard of Zhou Yang? She is now well known 1 an excellent short track speed skater (短道速滑运动员).
Zhou Yang is not an overnight 2. She was born in a poor family in Changchun on June 9th, 1991 and started 3at the age of 8.She fell in love with the 4at once when she put on her skates to train for the first time. Soon her talent (天赋) for short track speed skating was 5. Zhou Yang trained hard and made her way into the national team 6.
In the world championships (锦标赛) in 2008, Zhou Yang set a world record in the 1, 500m event. Zhou Yang 7herself again in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her performance gave China the 8gold medal in the women's 1, 500 meters in the Winter Olympics — China had never won the event before.
"Winning the event is my dream, 9I still have one more dream, winning the relay (接力赛)," Zhou Yang said.
Her "one more dream" 10when she and her teammates won the women's 3, 000m short track relay with a new world record.
Teenager Jake Denham was skiing (滑雪) with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn't know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.
Jake couldn't find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn't work out the right way to go.
It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm (镇定). At home, Jake watched a lot of programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed it up the hill so the wind couldn't blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous 15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.
But he had to get down the mountain. The TV programmes always said，"If you are lost, you should find someone else's tracks (轨迹) through the snow and follow them." "I wanted to live my life，" remembers Jake." So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those." He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. Nine hours after he lost his ski, he found a team of workers who came to save him. He was safe!
His mum was very happy when she heard the news. Amazingly, Jake didn't even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.
So, the next time someone says that watching TV is a waste of time, think of Jake. Sometimes TV can save your life!

Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new.
When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles, I was thinking, "I must be crazy. Why did I do this？What was I thinking?" And at one moment, I said to myself, "I will never do this again!"
That first 10km race was quite an experience. I jogged (慢跑), I walked, and I jogged and walked. At times, I didn't know if I could finish.
Near the end, a 70yearold man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed (尴尬的) that I was more than 50 years younger than him and I couldn't even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare ourselves to others when we really shouldn't？I decided that I would not give up, and that one day I would be one of those 70yearold men who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn't regret (后悔) having such an experience.
