A few months ago, I learned that the city food bank needed some volunteers. I used to be the 1 in my group of friends. So, I sent letters to 10 friends. I'd like to 2 a group that would volunteer to make and serve dinner for the disabled people. I wanted to 3 my friends to be part of the group. Almost all of my friends 4.
One day, several of my friends brought some food and helped prepare the 5 . " I got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the 6 people get the food!" said one friend. Later, another friend made a list (清单) about serving, 7 we could do quickly and easily. Now each month there are new faces that join the group. One woman 8 invited another group of her friends to serve. It's hard to imagine that simple 9 asking friends to help have made a great difference. At first, I just wanted to be an organizer. Now, I 10 my idea. I also love to work as a volunteer, because I can get more joy from the happy faces of the disabled people.

The sun shines almost every day. In the morning it is a little cold because the temperatures are low. Then later in the day, it is sunny and warm. So I have to wear a jacket in the morning and take it off when it gets warm. Sometimes it rains and I have to wear my raincoat. In spring my fingers and nose are always cold in the morning.
In winter it is very cold. It is snowy and rainy all the time. I have to wear a lot of clothes — my blue hat on my head, my black scarf around my neck, my red coat around my body and my thick white socks on my feet. Then I wear my black boots. I look like a bear with all these clothes. I hate it! It makes me look funny! But I am not cold.
Summer is the best season because it is hot and sunny. I only wear T-shirts and shorts. My T-shirts are in all colours. On my feet I wear my blue sandals (凉鞋) or white socks with my red and blue sports shoes. Then in autumn it gets cloudy and windy again, and I have to wear my coat or jacket again. I do not like it because later it is winter and I look like a bear again!
June 5 is World Environment Day. This makes us pay more attention to our environment.
Wang Jun is a high school boy in our school. When he uses up his exercise books, he does not throw them away. He collects them. He also encourages other students to collect their used exercise books. Then they store and sell them to a paper making factory.
The paper is recycled and used again by students and teachers in the school. At the same time, the money from the sales goes to schools in Inner Mongolia for planting trees and grass. Inner Mongolia is one of the sources (源头) of the sandstorms that often attack Beijing during springtime.
Our school is one of the schools in the city that take part in the “green promise (承诺)” environmental protection activity. So far, nearly 210,000 students have taken part in the activity. They have collected more than 87 tons (吨) of waste paper.
“There have been more environment problems in many parts of China these years, such as haze (雾霾) and sandstorms,” said Wang.“We should do our duty and encourage others to do so as well.”
One day, Jay and Zeb were camping in the forest. They were old friends, and they camped together every summer.
It was just about lunchtime. Jay and Zeb were looking for a place to eat some lunch. Suddenly a bear appeared from behind the trees and stopped in their way. The bear was very surprised when it saw the two men. It roared (咆哮).
They started to run away from the bear. After a few steps, Jay fell down. He shouted for his friend to help him, but Zeb kept running and climbed a tree. Zeb climbed as high as he could. Jay was afraid that the bear would get him, but he remembered something his grandpa told him, “If you pretend to be dead (装死), a bear will leave you alone.”
Jay then pretended to be dead. When the bear came up, it smelled all over his body. The bear's breath was hot and dirty. Jay was scared, but he didn't move. Several minutes later, the bear left.
After the bear left, Zeb came down from the tree. He was happy that Jay was okay. “How are you?” he asked Jay.
Jay looked very upset. “Well, Zeb,” he said, “I have just learned a very important lesson.”
“What did you learn, Jay?” asked Zeb.
“I learned that you should never walk with a friend who leaves you at the first sign of danger.” Jay walked away from Zeb. Zeb tried to apologize (道歉), but it was too late.
Sea turtles (海龟) are cute animals, but they are in danger of going extinct (灭绝的). That's mainly because many people kill them for food.
But this news may stop those people: Dr Nichols and other scientists have found that sea turtles take in a lot of pollution from the sea. It is bad for both sea turtles' and humans' health. Many people get sick and even die from eating sea turtle meat.
People in America don't usually have sea turtles on their dinner table. They think eating sea turtles is gross (令人恶心的). Also, all the seven kinds of sea turtles are protected by law. “But some people around the world still eat them,” explained Dr Nichols. “At first we wanted to save sea turtles; now we want to save people, too.”
Dr Nichols wants to send the information to people who still think sea turtle meat is good food. And he wants people to understand a bigger message: we should protect the sea. “The health of the sea, the health of the animals in the sea, and our own health all have close relationships. For a long time we didn't really realize it,” said Dr Nichols. “Now it's clear that a clean sea is really good for us because of the food we eat from there.”
① They think it's gross to eat them.
② They are too expensive.
③ They don't know how to cook them.
④ They are protected by law.
Can you think of ways to make the world greener? Here is an e . A couple have travelled around the world in 297 days — w taking any planes.
Tom Fewins and Lara Lockwood u 78 buses, 61 trains, 34 cars, 18 boats, 6 bicycles, and even 1 elephant. They wanted to prove (证明) that t can still travel well without damaging (破坏) the environment. They thought they could p less than 3,000 kg of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) if they didn't travel by plane.
They spent ten months travelling 44,609 miles t 18 countries on land and sea. The couple's tour b in June, 2008 with a two-hour bus trip to London from their home in Oxforshire. They t the train to Brussels and then caught a bus and train to Hamburg. The couple even r on an elephant for 15 miles to go through the Chinese part of the Mekong River.
The couple hoped to write a book based on their j . They thought it would teach other travellers how to travel in a green way.
