How do you like your school? Have you ever written to your headmaster to express your idea? Here are some letters written by students from different schools.

    Luke, 14, from Jiangsu:

I will give the suggestion about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear school uniform every day. But the yellow and green uniform looks really dark and old. It can't stand for young and lively spirit. We can add some red and orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about it.

    Danny, 14, from Zhejiang:

I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science, such as plane model making class and computer programming class. And second, I hope we can have more PE lessons or more time for physical exercise. After all, health comes first.

    Sam, 15, from Shanxi:

I'd like to say “thank you” to our headmaster. About one week ago, I got a bad cold after playing basketball. Our headmaster came to see me after he knew about it. I really want to thank him for that.

    Helen, 14, from Shandong:

I want to talk about the possibility of personal classes. Now many middle schools are trying the personal class system. I think there's something good for it. First, it is more effective (有效的) because students can choose their lessons they want to take. Also, it is good for exercise. We don't have to just stay in one classroom all the time.                                                                                                                  C

Ricardo Semler became the boss of his father's company in Brazil at the age of 21. The name of the company is Semco. It sold parts for ships. Semler worked like a mad man, from 7:30 in the morning to midnight every day. One afternoon, while he was visiting a factory in New York, he fell down. The doctor said, “ There's nothing wrong with you. But if you continue like this, you'll find a new home in our hospital.” Semler got the message. He changed the way he worked. In fact, he changed the ways his workers worked, too.

At the same time, Semler changed the office. Instead of walls, they have plants at Semco, so the boss can't shut himself away from everyone else. And the workers are free to decorate their workplace as they want. As for uniforms, some people wear suits and others wear T-shirts.

Semco has flexible working hours: the workers can decide when they need to arrive at work. Also, Semco lets its workers use the company's machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.

It sounds perfect, but does it work? The answer is in the numbers: in the last six years, Semco's revenues (收益) have gone from $35 million to $212 million. The company has grown from 800 workers to 3,000. Why?

Semler says it's because of “peer pressure” (同辈压力). Peer pressure makes workers work hard. It means if someone isn't doing his job well, the other workers will not allow the situation to continue. In other words, Semler treat his workers like adults rather than children, and expects them to act like responsible (负责任的) adults. And they do.

    1. (1) Why did Semler change the ways he and his workers worked?

A . Because he became mad. B . Because he had to stay in hospital. C . Because his father asked him to do. D . Because he realized the danger of overwork.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word “ flexible” probably mean in Chinese?

      A . 灵活的 B . 短暂的 C . 漫长的 D . 固定的
    3. (3) What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?

      A . Adults. B . Semler's workers. C . The bosses. D . Semco's revenues.
    4. (4) In Paragraph 4, the writer mainly wants to tell us       .

A . the company made a lot of money B . the reason for Ricardo Semler's success C . Ricardo Semler's idea sounded perfect but it didn't work D . Ricardo Semler's method of running the company was successful

Are you creative, shy, outgoing? Our personalities (性格) tell a lot about who we are. But what's surprising is that our personality can also say something about our health. That's according to researchers at Duke University, US.

During an experiment on 1,000 people, scientists assessed (评定) their personalities into two ways: by asking someone they knew, such as a family member or a friend; then by asking someone they had just met, such as a nurse. The study found that those who were careful at the age of 26 were in better health after 12 years.

Being careful means that people are more likely to have a lot of self-control (自控力), and are less likely to smoke. Careful people are also more likely to have an active lifestyle and a healthy diet, the scientists said.

From those who were less careful, 45 % developed health problems by the age of 38. Such health problems included gum disease and high blood pressure. To compare, only 18 % of careful people went to develop health problems.

Another positive (积极的) personality was called “openness to experience”, meaning curious (好奇的) and imaginative. People who have more of this personality have higher IQ scores. So they'd be more likely to know how to find medical help to prevent disease.

According to the report, if doctors assessed our personalities, it could help doctors to find which young adults need advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

But can a doctor who knows our personality really improve our health? Or should doctors be kept away from knowing something so personal?

    1. (1) What kind of people are more likely to develop health problems?

A . Careful people. B . Less careful people. C . Those who have self-control. D . Those who are curious and imaginative.
    2. (2) By the age of 38,          MORE of the less careful people developed health problems than the careful people.

      A . 18% B . 27% C . 45% D . 63%
    3. (3) Which of the following shows the writer's opinion?

A . Careful people are more likely to have an active lifestyle. B . Scientists assessed people's personalities into two ways in the experiment. C . The study found that those who were careful develop fewer health problems. D . A doctor who knows our personality may not be able to really improve our health.
    4. (4) What's the best title of the passage?

      A . Healthy Personality. B . Unhealthy Personality. C . Personalities and Health. D . Different Personalities.
