Two weeks before my 12th birthday, my teacher asked me to conduct an experiment. When I mixed some powder together, they exploded. Molten liquid hit me in the face, but I felt no pain.
I vividly remember standing there in a state of calm. I thought I was in a dream, but however hard I struggled to swim to the surface of consciousness, I couldn't wake up. I didn't understand how terrifying it was until I heard people saying, "Who's that?" That's when I knew I was unrecognizable.
I was taken to hospital, but the doctors didn't know what to do with me. Later I was flown to Houston for surgery. Between the ages of 13 and 16, I had 40 operations. As each operation came and went, my vision would come back, then fade again. Eventually, it faded completely and I had what was left of my eyes removed for cosmetic reasons.
Since then, I have lived in total darkness. Most blind people, even if they don't have any sight they're aware of, are still able to sense light. That gives them a sense of day and night. But not me. I absolutely lost that sense of time passing.
For many years, I felt my sight loss darkening my life like the loss of my parents from which I would never recover. But when I was in my 40s, I realized I had to find a way to live. I trained to become a counselor, and that has helped me see my experiences in a different way. I can't fix people's broken lives — just like I can't fix my sight — but I can help them find a way to manage.
Sometimes it feels as if all the struggles and negative experiences I've lived through were in fact a kind of preparation for helping others to make their own way towards the light.

Every year, hundreds of millions of Monarch Butterflies(黑脉金斑蝶) from Canada and the United States journey as far as 2, 500 miles to the forests of Michoacan, Mexico, a place which has the world's largest insect migration(迁移). It's such a breathtaking sight, but as always, human greed is threatening to destroy it.
The Monarch Butterflies start to arrive in Michoacan in late October to make their winter home in the trees high up in the mountains of the natural reserve. Once there, they gather together in large masses. These masses often become so heavy that they cause tree branches to bend or even break. But there's a purpose of all these massing — it allows the butterflies to survive in the low nighttime temperatures at these high altitudes.
The Michoacan Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is most impressive during the months of February and March, just before the winged insects begin their long journey home.
Mexico's Butterfly Forest is a shelter protected by law, and one of the country's most popular sights, but that hasn't stopped people from slowly but steadily destroying it.
Illegal woodcutting in the heart of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve has been a longstanding problem, but criminals are rarely brought to justice. They are often set free after paying some money.
Just last month, an even greater threat rose in Michoacan's butterfly home. The country's largest mining corporation gained the right to reopen an old mine in the heart of the monarch reserve. Experts believe that if the mine is reopened, it will likely spell the end of this magical place.
And as if all this wasn't bad enough, the increasing use of herbicides(除草剂) in the American corn belt has led to the decrease of a plant which is essential to the monarchs' development from egg into butterfly.

University graduates Mallorie Brodie and Lauren Hasegawa, who invented a smartphone app that tracks construction defects for commercial builders, had a tiger by the tail.
Bridgit, which they founded in 2012, launched a cloud-based communications platform that helped manage defects on construction sites, which can delay projects and result in costly repairs if left unchecked. The smartphone application lets site supervisors take photos of cracks or damaged paint, share them with employees and track the problems to solution.
More than 600 subcontractors used the pilot version in many building sites before the commercial version, called Closeout, officially launched.
Feedback(反馈)was so good that they began to wonder: Why limit their invention to a specific industry? Why not turn it into some kind of a handy tool for consumers too? This became their dilemma. In other words, should they stay the course or look for wider applications of their app?
The experts polled all agreed Bridgit should stay focused on its original goal. Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie took that advice.
As more business customers signed on, it became clear that they made the right decision. Since then, the company's growth has been rapid.
Earlier this year, Bridgit launched Closeout ,which is designed so that even the least tech-savvy can use it easily. Today, the app is being used on sites across Canada and the United States and even by top general contractors.
In October, Bridgit was named to the Canadian Innovation Exchange's top 20 list of Canada's most innovative (创新的) companies working in digital media and information and communication technology .
But Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie are not resting on their glories. They have also been collecting feedback on Closeout from customers, and they'll launch a new version in the spring. It will target not only general contractors but developers and building owners, too.
Do you want to worry less? Of course you do, right? That's like me asking if I could send you free bacon. Worry is like black mold — it appears in damp conditions and spreads uncontrollably. And often times we don't realize it's there until it's killing us. We must get rid of worry before it destroys us. But how?
Do What You Need to Do.
You ought not to avoid tough projects or hard conversions until the last moment. If you don't do what you should be doing, you will end up spending the rest of the time worrying about the must-do things. Believe it or not, the anxiety that comes from worrying is much worse than the task we're worried about.
Get Intentional.
I think many of us act like we're puppets in a play and we're waiting for something or someone to put us in the right place. You just react to whatever is going on. We need to stop letting life just happen. We need to live on purpose.
You can't have intentionality without making plans. Making plans will enable you to achieve your aims more smoothly. Yet, don't place your plans in stone. You can adjust your plans flexibly. Accept changes. Make new plans.
There are other ways to lessen worry. As long as you are determined to take action, you will live a worry-free life.
A. Worry ruins creativity.
B. Make Plans
C. Do what you should be doing.
D. Here are some effective ways to deal with it.
E. Then move forward.
F. You do the same as people around you do.
G. Nothing can cause worry like purposelessness.

Recently, my friend, who is a physician, told me she wasn't doing a "good enough" job being a parent and was missing out on her children's lives.
I've learned that other physicians also believe the 1 of their profession will somehow adversely(不利地)affect their children's 2.
I tell my colleagues not to 3, and that one day their child will appreciate them for their life as a 4child.
I can say this 5 my mother was a palliative-care physician. Being the daughter of a palliative care physician wasn't 6: I came to understand mother's absence, having to 7her with others, and being 8to human suffering and death were just 9 of my life. 10, being the child of a physician had a 11 effect on my life. I learned love was sacrifice and you would get love and appreciation in return. If I could have my 12over again, I wouldn't change much.
Sure, there were times when I wanted to 13 my mother's pager(传呼机)out of the window, or 14that she could have attended school events. But even as a child I knew what I was 15, and what she was sacrificing, were 16 worth it for the life that I got to lead. My mother's work as a palliative-care physician provided me with experiences that enriched my life, teaching me 17 lessons, skills and the knowledge of kindness, sympathy and generosity.
So, to anyone who is concerned about 18 a career with raising children, I offer you my reassurance. While there will be tough times, one day your child will 19 you for the experiences and the life they've had as a result of your 20.
As is known to all, we live in a world of germs(细菌). It is impossible to avoid exposure. Genetic makeups may give some people advantage over others. However, it does not stop people (become) sick.
All of us have been a victim of an (ill) at some point in our lives. Moreover, it is likely that we (get) sick again in the future. Our best chances of avoiding sickness (be) by exercising and employing good (habit).
While good hygiene and exercise serve as obvious advice to most people, eating healthily is not always obvious. If you cannot define "healthy", then your immune system will be happy (tell) you. The immune system is the foundation of our health. It works for us every day to keep us well. Ask yourself: "Are you making its job easier harder?"
Like any system, the immune system is no (difference). It has a tolerance too. If you eat unhealthily, your immune system will make you aware of it.
Take a step the right direction by including some healthy food in your diet.

Dear Jack,
I'm sorry to hear that you feel lonely in the new school, because you find hard to make
friends. Now, I'd like to offer you any advice.
Firstly, it's normal for you to feel lonely because you were living in a new environment.
Secondly, you should greet your classmates when met them on campus. Thirdly, it will be a
good idea if you take an actively part in class activities, what can help them learn more about
you. I believe you will be able to make new friends soon unless you're friendly to the others.
I hope the suggestion above will be helpful to you and everything will be fine with you
for the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
