Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all! It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 per cent of what we really mean while words themselves only express 7 per cent. So, while your mouth is closed, your body is just saying...

Arms. How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone upsets you, just cross your arms to show you're unhappy!

Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you are the monitor in class, you can also take on this position when you want your words to be taken seriously. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little to one side.

Legs. Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!

Posture(姿势). A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you normally don't sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing more difficult, which in turn can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.

Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse your lips(噘起嘴唇). You might also use this position to hold back an angry comment you don't wish to show. However it will probably still be noticed, and people will know you're not pleased.

    1. (1) How many kinds of body language are mentioned in this passage?
      A . Three. B . Four. C . Five. D . Six.
    2. (2)          , you may cross your arms.
A . When someone helps you B . When someone upsets you C . when someone hits you D . When someone pleases you
    3. (3) You should hold your head level if you_________.
A . want others to take your words seriously B . want to be friendly in listening C . want to be polite D . want to make fun of others
    4. (4) What does the underlined word refer to?
      A . Lifting your arm. B . Nodding your head. C . Giving a posture. D . Pursing your lips.

Most children like to watch cartoons on TV because of the funny characters and the bright colours. But is it good for children to watch cartoons on TV?

Some people think it leaves nothing for children to imagine when they are watching cartoons on TV. They can see the different characters so they need not imagine the appearance of a character or any situation in the cartoon. But when reading a book, he has to imagine what the different characters look like. He has to imagine a place or a situation described in the story he is reading, so the imaginative power of the child improves.

Very little children may not be able to read books. But they will be happy to watch TV, especially watch cartoons. Watching cartoons will improve their language ability. As most of the cartoons are in English, watching them will improve their English. They will learn to understand the conversations between others. Their vocabulary will get improved.  They will learn how to pronounce different words. Their spoken English will also get greatly improved. These are the advantages of watching cartoons.

But there should be a limit to everything. Parents should control their children's time on TV. However, you cannot keep children from watching TV completely. It will only do more harm than good.

    3. (3) what does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

Most musicians agree that the best violins were first made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. These violins sound better than any other violin. They even sound better than the violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the Italian violins. But they aren't the same. Musicians still prefer the old ones.

Some people think it is the age of the violins. But not all the old violins sound wonderful. Only the old violins from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the correct answer.

Other people think the secret to those violins is wood. The wood must be from certain kinds of trees. But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin.  Musicians sometimes think that it is the secret of the Italians. Possibly they understood more than us about how to cut the wood.

Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists can make new ones which are exactly the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish (清漆). Varnish is what covers the wood of the violin. It makes the wood look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. But no one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish.

    1. (1) Violins first made in Cremona     .
A . are worse than the violins made today B . are the same as the violins made today C . sound better than the violins made today D . have the same varnish as the violins made today
    2. (2) Why is the violin painted with the varnish?
A . To make it sell better. B . To make it look shiny. C . To make the sound better. D . Both B and C.
    3. (3) From Paragraph 3, we can learn     .
A . all the old violins sound wonderful B . wood for violins must be cut carefully C . the kind of wood must be very important D . the age of the violins must be the correct answer
    4. (4) What is the passage mainly about?
A . Scientific ideas about violins made today. B . The ways of making good violins. C . The musical instruments. D . The old Italian violins.

Many animals are in danger of dying out. We can see the number of animal species decreases faster and faster and this trend will continue. From 1980 to 2010, at least I million animal species disappeared. Worse still, more and more wild animals are in great danger. It is not a piece of terrible news; it is a fact, a harsh reality. Unfortunately, we may not see these animals in the near future.

Why is the number of animal species declining year by year? Apparently animals have become victims of fashion industry. Animal skin has been used to make fashionable clothes and these clothes are sold at a high price. So some greedy people begin to kill animals in a large quantity.  This irresponsible behaviour not only breaks the balance of nature but also endangers the living environment of human beings.

As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal action. We believe "no buying, no killing". First, we must make concerning laws to protect these animals in danger.  Second, we must take some measures to protect animals effectively. Animals are our friends and part of our environment. Third, we should raise people's awareness to protect animals and our environment.  In this way, we can build a harmonious society and ensure a sustainable development.

    1. (1) From the first paragraph, we Can learn that
A . the number of animal species decreases faster and faster B . the number of animal species increases faster and faster C . the number of animal species increases more and more D . the number of animals increases more and more.
    2. (2) When did at least 1 million animal species disappear?
      A . From 1908 to 2010. B . From 1980 to 2011. C . From 1980 to 2010. D . From 1981 to 2010.
    3. (3) Where did animal skin go?
      A . The museums. B . Home. C . The fashion clothes factories. D . The libraries.
    4. (4) Which of the following is NOT true according to Paragraph 3?
A . We must make laws to protect these animals in danger. B . We must take some measures to protect animals effectively. C . We should raise people's awareness to protect animals and our environment. D . We should breed wild animals.

A new-born panda is smaller than a mouse and weighs about 100 grams.

Elephants are the most careful animals in their love. A male elephant may show his lady love for up to three years until the female elephant takes his love. They often show their love by touching each other's body.

Usually, wolves do not hurt people. For years a Canadian newspaper says that they would give anyone a lot of money if he or she could show that a wolf could hurt a person.
