A few days ago, I sat in the sofa watching TV. Just then, I got a(n) 1 from a friend of mine. I haven't seen him 2 a very long time. We talked about our schooldays on the phone, and then he started talking about his 3.
His mother was badly ill in hospital. She couldn't sleep at night and often 4 to herself. My friend was angry 5 her and asked his mother 6talking. Since then, his mother didn't say anything. The doctor said she had a kind of mental disease(心理疾病) and that she couldn't look after herself like a normal person. My friend was very sad. He thought it was his fault(过错). My friend 7 like a baby on the telephone. He said that he could do 8 if his mother became better.
Do you know 9 our parents love us and care for us all the time? I think we should 10 love our parents and take care of them. A good relationship with your parents can make you be a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!
On my way home I knocked into a stranger as he passed by. "Oh. I'm terribly sorry," I said. "That's all right. Please excuse me too; I wasn't even 1you. I wish I didn't hurt you. "
We were very 2. We said goodbye and went on our way.
But at home we often 3 our loved ones in a different way.
Later that day, while I was cooking the evening meal, my daughter stood beside me very quietly. When I turned, I nearly 4 her down. "Move out of the way." I shouted. She walked away, tears in her eyes.
While I lay awake in bed, I realized how 5 I'd spoken. So I decided to get up to say sorry to my daughter. On the way to her bedroom, to my surprise, I found some 6 by the door of the kitchen. At that time my tears began to fall. I quietly went and got down on my knees by her 7. She woke up and put her arms around my neck when I kissed her. Then I asked, "Did you pick these flowers for me?"
She smiled," I found them out by the tree. I picked them 8 they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them. I stood quietly in order to give you a surprise." "Oh dear, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn't have shouted at you."
"That's okay. Mum. I 9 you anyway. "
I suddenly realized what a clever way it is to explain the word 10 like this:(F)ather (A)nd (M)other, (I) (L)ove (Y)ou!
A. Can I book (预订) the rooms now? B. Did you go anywhere interesting? C. Do you have a good idea? D. How can we get there? E. How was your vacation? F. This is Helen speaking. G. Where will you go on vacation? |
A: Hello! May I speak to Helen, please?
B: Hello! Who's that?
A: Susan speaking.
B: I am not sure.
A: Yes, I do. What about going to Chengdu together?
B: Good idea.
A: By train.
B: OK. Two double rooms, please.

"My dear lady," says Holmes. "You're shivering. Are you cold? Do you want a cup of hot tea?"
"I'm not cold," the woman replies. "I fear for my life!"
"We are here to help you. Don't worry about anything. I don't know you. But I know many things about you. For example, I know how you travel. You came to London by train. You also rode to the train station on a horsedrawn wagon(马拉车). "
"Why, yes. You're right. But how do you know these things?"
"I see a return ticket in your glove. I see fresh mud on the left arm of your dress. Now tell us your problem. "
"My name is Helen Stoner," she states. "My mother and father are dead. I am living with my stepfather, Dr Grimesby Roylott. He comes from a rich family. But they are no longer rich. They have nothing except a small piece of land and a huge old house. We are living in the house. Dr Roylott is using my mother's money for expenses(开支). Part of it was for my sister and me. It was for our marriages."
Holmes is sitting in his chair. His eyes are closed. He is listening carefully to Helen's story. He hears every detail.
Helen continues. "My stepfather has no friends. He fights with everyone. He is strong and gets angry quickly. Everyone is afraid of him. "
"He has no friends at all?" asks Holmes.
"No. He talks to no one except the gypsies. They are poor people who travel from place to place. A band of gypsies is staying on our land right now."
"Are you and your sister afraid of the gypsies?"
"My dear Mr. Holmes. You are making me so sad. My sister is dead. That is why I am standing here in this room."
When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to face the music", it doesn't mean that he is planning to go to hear a singer or attend a concert. It is something far sadder than you are called in by your leader to explain why you did this and that or why you did not do this or that.
At some time or another, every one of us has to "face the music", especially as children. We can all remember Father's angry words "I want to talk to you". And only because we did not listen to him. What a bad thing it was!
In the middle or at the end of every term, we students have to "face the music". The result of the exam will decide whether we will face the music or not. If.…that means parents' cold faces and contempt (轻蔑) of the teachers and classmates.
The American novelist James Fennimore Cooper said in 1851 that the expression "face the music" was first used by actors while waiting aside to go on stage. When it was their turn to go on the stage, they often said, "It's time to face the music." An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved onto the stage in front of the audience because they might be friendly, or perhaps they are hostile, especially if he forgot what he would say. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. He would lose his job.
"To face the music" is well known to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. It really means that you have to do something, no matter how terrible the whole thing might be, because you know you have no choice.
When I was in school, I got into an argument (争吵) with a boy in my class.
I thought that "I" was right and that "he" was wrong—and he thought that "I" was wrong and that "he" was right. The teacher decided to teach us a lesson.
She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. There was a large round object on her desk. It was black. But when she asked the boy, he answered, "White."
I couldn't believe it! Another argument started, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told us to change our places. Then she asked me, "What color is the object?" I had to answer, "White." It was an object with two differently colored sides. From his side it was white. From my side it was black.
Sometimes we need to stand in other persons' shoes and look at the problem through their eyes.
Road accidents keep happening in every city, on every road and at any time. Traffic rules are made to keep order on the road. They can also help to keep the pedestrians(行人)safe.
The pedestrian has as many rules to follow as the driver of a car. You should walk on the sidewalk or at the edge of the road. Always look carefully before you walk across the street. If you ride a bike, don't ride in the middle of the road or look around to talk. If you drive, you should slow down at the traffic lights. You must always wear a seat belt(安全带). Without the belts, both the driver and the passengers may be badly hurt in a sudden accident.
Traffic rules are also called Road Safety rules. The maxim(格言)for all road users is "Thinking about others."
