Last Monday, we had an (interest) and funny English class. In the class, we had discussion about TV shows in small (group). Here is what Li Dong, one of my classmates, (think) of some TV shows.
"For soap operas, I can't (real) stand (忍受) them. They are long and (bore). Some meaningless. They usually make me want to sleep. I love sports shows such as football games and basketball games. I like watching the World Cup on TV best. I think all the games are exciting. do I think of talent shows? I like them. I think I can learn a lot of things from them. What about talk shows? I don't mind them. there are no my favorite shows on TV, sometimes I watch talk shows. But if there is a sports game, I choose to watch the sports game."
These are Li Dong's likes and dislikes about TV shows. What do you think of TV shows?
An artist went to a beautiful part of the country for a holiday, and stayed with a farmer. Every day he 1 out with his paints (绘画颜料) and his brushes and 2 from morning to evening, and when it 3 dark, he went back to the farm and had a good 4 before he went to bed.
At the end of his holiday he wanted to5 the farmer, but the farmer said, "No, I do not want money, but 6 me one of your pictures. Because in a week the money will all be used up, but your painting will still be here."
The artist was very 7 and thanked the farmer for 8 such kind things about his paintings.
The farmer smiled and answered, "It's not that. I have a son in London. He wants to 9 an artist. When he comes here next month, I will 10 him your picture, and then he will not want to be an artist any more, I think."
There was an old mule(骡子). One day accidentally he fell into the farmer's well. The farmer thought for a while and said to himself that neither the well nor the old mule was important to him. So he decided to use soil to bury the old mule in the well.
Then the farmer called his neighbours and they started to put the soil into the well together. The old mule was quite afraid in the beginning. But soon one hopeful idea came to his mind - every time when a shovel(铁铲) of soil landed on his back, he would shake it off and step up!
He said these words to himself again and again, "Shake it off and step up." This way he could fight against the panic (恐慌) and encourage himself. After some time, the mule had stepped over the well's wall. Although terribly tired, he was the winner and he saved his own life. He decided to face his difficulty bravely and not to give up, and finally he won.
Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code(条形码)?
A small food store owner found it was difficult to keep records of the product information. In 1948; he contacted the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. Bernard Silver was interested in it and he set out to look into it. Silver and his students realized their answer in the form of ultraviolet light(紫外线),ink and a scanner(扫描仪).
The system did work at first, but it's very expensive and sometimes the system didn't work well. If the invention was to become popular in grocery stores, the problems had to be solved. Finally, Silver solved them.
The patent (专利权) for the bar code system was asked by Silver and Woodland in 1949. But the patent was not given until 1952. Although this patent was given, the system was still not popular among store owners. In 1966, the system began moving its way into more grocery stores. Logicorn developed the Universal Grocery Products Identification Number (普遍标识号) in 1970. Marsh's superstore in Troy was the first store to set up this bar code reading system. It became very popular ever since, and now it's obviously popular in all types of stores worldwide.

A Small Invention, Big Help
An invention is an invention - big or small. A big invention makes us feel it all the time, such as the TV and the computer. There are also several small things around us even if we seldom pay much attention to them.
A paper clip helps hold pieces of paper together without making a hole. A big paper clip was put up in Norway to help people remember the inventor of the paper clip, Johann Vaaler. He invented the paper clip in 1900 when working in Germany. A paper clip is in fact a piece of wire (金属丝) that is made in such a way that it can hold together many pieces of paper. Now millions of them are made and sold all over the world. |
The ballpoint pen was invented in 1938 by a Hungarian, had been trying to find another use for the quick drying ink (快干油墨) and designed this pen. Later, a Frenchman, Marcel Bich thought up the idea of making a use-and-throw pen and sold it cheap. It was named BIC and became very popular. |
A Bite of China, the seven-part documentary (纪录片) introduces Chinese food through the geography, history and culture.
A Bite of China is fill of &eat pictures of food, from expensive food to local food. The documentary shows Chinese food culture and how to make the delicious food.
How to make dishes is only one part of food culture. The program tries to bring something new by showing more cultural elements (元素) about dishes, such as eating habits, and people's life. For example, one part tells China's history of rice growing. It explains why rice is the main food of the southern Chinese, while the northern ones mainly eat wheat flour (面粉).
And a part about pickles(腌制食品) tells about a woman in Beijing. She returns to her hometown in Jilin and makes pickles for the first time for her lonely mother.
Another part shows happy moments of sons and daughters making New Year cakes after they return home from different cities to celebrate with their lonely parents in Zhejiang.
A Bite of China also shows social changes when showing food culture. For example, some members of a family work outside but leave the old in their hometowns - in this case, food can make people remember the happy time.
