A Letter to the Editor(编辑)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you about a man in our hospital. He needs your help. His name is Joseph Merrick, and he is 27 years old. He is not ill, but he cannot go out of the hospital because he is very, very ugly. Nobody likes to look at him, and some people are afraid of him. We call him "The Elephant Man".
Two years ago, Merrick lived in a shop near the London Hospital. For two pence, people could see him and laugh at him. One day Dr Frederick Traves--a hospital doctor—saw Merrick, brought him to this hospital, and looked at him carefully. Dr Traves could not help Merrick, but he gave him his card.
Then the shopkeeper, Silcock, took Merrick to Belgium(比利时). A lot of people in Belgium wanted to see him, and so after a year Merrick had £50. But then Silcock took Merrick's £50. left Merrick in Belgium, and went back to London.
Merrick came back to London by himself. Everyone on the train and the ship looked at him, and laughed at him. In London, the police put him in prison(监狱).But then they saw Dr Traves's card, brought Merrick to the London Hospital.
This man has no money, and he cannot work. His face and body are very, very ugly, so of course many people are afraid of him. But he is a very interesting man. He can read and write, and he thinks a lot. He is good, quiet man. Sometimes he makes things with his hands and gives them to the nurses, because they are kind to him.
He remembers his mother, and he has a picture of her. She was beautiful and kind, he say. But he never sees her now. She gave him to Silcock a long tine ago.
Can the readers of The Times help us? This man is not ill, but he needs a home. We can give him a room at the hospital, but we need some money. Please write to me at the London Hospital.
Yours faithful,
F. C. Carr Gomm.
Chairman of the London Hospital
On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson Creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash(H l)was taken out from there.
"We did a good job, "said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event, "Were planning to come back here one more time, three years from now, Of course, we hope that there won't be so much trash next time."
The trash came in all shapes, sizes, and colors: bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls, and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs(球杆).
The dirty and tiring work was done by two volunteer groups Save the Bay and Watch the Whales. Most of the volunteers came from a local police station and a fire station. And some of them were old people who had already retired (退休)。
That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots, gloves and raincoats. The work took place along a two- mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags every where.
No one found anything that cost much. A five- year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he'd sell it. Then he'd donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favorite ice- cream every day.
Many people laughed at the boy's story. However, it was easily found that the environment there did become better.
People believed for a long time that the heart was the center of a person s emotions(情感,情绪). That is why the word" heart" is used in so many expressions about notional situations.
When that happens, you have fallen in love. But if the person who "won your heart" does not love you, then you are sure to have a "broken heart". In your pain and sadness, you may decide that the person you loved is" hard-hearted", and in fact, has a "heart of stone".
You may decide to "pour out your heart" to a friend. If your friend does not seem to understand how painful your broken heart is, you may ask her to "have a heart". Your friend" has her heart in the right place" if she says she is sorry, and shoes great concern(关心)for how you feel. Your friend may, however, warn you not to" wear your heart on your sleeve袖子), In other words, do not let everyone see how ",lovesick you are. If your friend says "my heart bleeds for you", she means opposite. She is a cold-hearted person who does not really care about your situation.
When you are frightened or concerned, your "heart is your mouth". You might say, for example, that your heart was in your mouth when you asked a bank to lend you some money to pay for a new house. Be "strong-hearted". Sit down with the banker and have a" heart to heart" talk: Be open and honest about your situation. The bank may have a" change of heart"——it may agree to lend you the money. Then you could stop worrying and" put your heart at rest".
A. Telling someone about your personal problems can often make you feel better.
B. If that bank says no to you, do not "lose heart".
C. When your heart is on your sleeve, you are showing your deepest emotions.
D. One such expression is to "lose your heart".
E. You are asking your friend to show some sympathy (同情) for your situation.
In a1, a couple had to move out of their big house because of bankruptcy(破产). The husband worked day and night but with no care of2, So she thought," He doesn't love me any more, he just thinks about his work."
One day, she wanted to take a shower, but her husband3her at the door." Let me take it first OK?" "4let me first?" she asked." I'm5, dear You take it later, OK? "She was very sad.
On a rainy day, she found nothing to do and6 his computer.7a few minutes, her eyes were full of tears… it was his8:
"Today, I was quite sad, she asked me9I was always taking the shower first, and I said I was tired. She was unhappy. I wasn't as10as before! We moved to the small house and it was very cold. But I11that if one person took the shower first, the bathroom could get a12warmer. So I13 rushed to the bathroom first. When she took the shower, the bathroom14get warmer, at least 1℃ or 2℃. Now I can't give her more. but at least I can give151℃ love."

Jean Valjean left the town of Digne, with his silver plates and his silver candlesticks. , he was a rich man, but he did not understand why.

Smiles send us light in the darkness. Smiles bring us warm sunlight on a cold day. Smiles can break the hard ice. Smiles are like the rainbow. The rainy days end the sky is beautiful again.
Smiles show love and friendship. Teachers' Smiles encourage us. Mothers' Smiles warm us. Friends' Smiles make us .
We welcome smiles from others. And we give others our smiles too. No one is richer than a man often smiles at others. If a man doesn't smile at you, just Smiles at him. Smiles help you forget your sadness.
Life is long road. Why not cover it with smiles?
