Mark was a farmer. He lived in a village far away. One day he became very ill and everyone knew he would1 soon. They sent for a doctor. Two days2the doctor came and examined the sick man 3 asked for a pen and some paper to write down the name of the medicine. But there was no pen 4 paper in the village, because no one could write.
The doctor 5 up a piece of burnt wood from the fire and wrote the name of the medicine on the door of the house." Get this medicine 6 him," he said," and he'll soon get 7."
Mark's family and friends did not know 8 to do. They could not read the strange words. Then a young man 9 an idea. He took off the door of the house, put it on his carriage and drove to the nearest hospital. He bought10there, and Mark was soon well again.
Who can help you? Maybe you think your parents, teachers or others can help you. But in fact, all these people only help you to help yourself.
There have been many great men in history. They had few people to help them. They could not get good education, either. But they tried their best to learn and never gave up. One famous teacher in England once told his students, "I cannot make you great men, but I can help you make men of yourselves."
However, some young people do nothing and they depend on others. If these young people can see their weak points(弱点) and change their ways, they can be successful. They are nothing now, and will be nothing in the future, unless they take the advice of their parents and teachers, and most importantly, depend on themselves.
Robert was a student in a high school. His lather wanted him to study in a good university in the future. But the young man didn't study hard and liked playing cards. He had to go out after his parents fell asleep at night.
One night, when Robert came back, his father saw him. He was very angry and let him live upstairs. Of course it was not easy for him to go out again.
Last night Robert listened carefully. When he was sure his parents went to sleep, he went out to play cards. He won some money and was very happy. When he got back, he took off his shoes and was going upstairs. He heard a noise in his parents bedroom. Then he saw a man come out. He knew it was a thief. He stopped him at once. The man was very afraid and gave all the things back to him.
"Tell me how you didn't wake my parents up." said Robert, "Or I'll take you to the police station!"
Do you often help the people who are in need?
One day, two boys were walking along the road to school when they saw an old woman carrying a large basket of pears. The old woman looked very tired. They went up and said, "Are you going to town? If you are, we'll help you carry your basket."
"Thank you," said the woman, "That's very kind of you." Then she told them that she was going to the market to sell the pears. So the boys decided to lift the basket together. They walked slowly with the heavy basket, but they were happy.
The other day, I saw a little girl pick up a piece of banana peel(香蕉皮). She threw it into the dustbin(垃圾箱). "I hope nobody would throw that on the street," she said, "Someone may slip and fall."
Perhaps some people may say that these are not great things. That's right. But almost all great things are made up of (由…组成) such small things. We shouldn't wait for the time to do great things. We should begin with these things that are full of love.
But almost all great things are made up of such small things.
