If I Could Go Back in Time
One of the most popular topics in the history of science fiction has been the idea of time travel.
When I was a child, I often dreamed about a time machine that would allow me to "save" certain moments of my life, so that in case I failed to do something, I could always "load" my life from a checkpoint. As I grew1, my life experiences gradually became more diverse (多样的). In many situations, I had no idea how to act properly, what decisions to make, what path to follow;2, I made mistakes. While many of my actions back then turned out for the good in the future, some mistakes provided many painful moments for me and people around me. Mistakes are certain to happen, but they allow us to learn,3ourselves, and drive us to change for the better - and still sometimes I would like to jump into a time machine, go back a couple of years ago, and make4.
Would I try to make other people act in a different way?' I think no. I would rather5myself about the awaiting consequences (后果) of my most careless decisions. I would talk to a longhaired teen holding his first cigarette and tell him, "Don't do that." So many warnings I would give to myself that sometimes I think: Was it really me who did this and that?
Having a time machine would make life easier. Perhaps, it is true. But what I think more often now is that living without this teaches us responsibility, about oneself, about important people to us, about one's own life. And besides, our6make us what we are today. Today I am a person leading a healthy, active lifestyle; I try to live each day to fullness in order to7nothing.
If I could go back in time, I would try to make my8better. This is what our parents always try to do when we are children. But you know what? I am glad that no time machine has been invented.
A Passion(热情) for Driving
It was a Friday morning, 7:30 am. I felt too lazy to drive my car, so my son booked the Uber. In five minutes, the Uber reached our door. I checked the cab number and got inside the car. I was busy searching my bag for an important paper, so I just said, "Please, go quickly! I'm in a hurry!"
The driver replied, "Yes, ma' am!
I was surprised when I heard a female voice. I stopped for a second and looked at the driver. She was a young lady, maybe around 30 or 32 years old. I had never had a female Uber driver before. I became interested in why she chose this job. I started the conversation, "If you don't mind, can I ask you some questions?"
"Yes, ma'am! No problem, "she said.
"I guess you are well-qualified, "I said.
"Yes, ma'am! I have completed my education. I have even gotten my MBA."
"What made you choose to do this job?" I could see her smiling face in the rear-view mirror(后视镜).
"I love driving. I don't care how big or small my job is. I want a job where I can get satisfaction. I haven't made much money from it yet, but as I told you, I love driving! That's all there is to it," very politely, she said, "Driving has been my passion since childhood. Of course, I respect each and every job. In this case, at least I realized my dream.
An Unforgettable Day
I had mixed feelings today, nervous, worried, happy, excited... My heart went down when Miss Chen, our head teacher, said that Matthew and Beth, two students from England, would spend three months with us! I was worried that I had to speak English so much! But at the end of the school day, I was happier than I thought: the morning with them today was more enjoyable than I expected.
Today is the most unforgettable first day I have had! Matthew is fantastic! His English is clearer and easier to listen to than I thought. The other English student, Beth, is the most helpful girl I've ever met. There were lots of things to do on the first day. Beth offered to help Miss Chen put up all the notices. Of course , some of the credit(功劳) should also go to me be- cause I translated some of the notices for her. Miss Chen praised us!
We finished all the preparations 10 minutes earlier than expected, then Beth and I talked for a while, Matthew sang several English songs and did some stand-up comedy at the party. We all praised him. When the bell rang to end the first school day, none of us wanted to leave.
When I went back home, I had a little headache. I have probably spoken more English today than the whole of last year. It was really a happy day! I hope our friendship can continue, even after they go back to England!
One day, Mr. Li was reading a book in his office after school. To his surprise, a ball flew in suddenly and hurt him on the head. He took the ball to the window, but he only saw a group of boy students running away quickly and disappearing in a minute. He sat down again and continued his reading. As it got dark, it was time for him to leave for home. Looking at the ball, he wondered what to do with it. He knew the owner of the ball must be nearby and wished to get it back. He went downstairs and walked to the playground. It was at the centre of the playground that he placed the ball with a piece of paper, on which he wrote "Be careful next time!" Then he walked away.
The next morning, as Mr. Li opened the office door, he found the same piece of paper on the floor some words were added after his words: "Thank you for your kindness. Anyway, you are a clever fellow."
Experiencing China
Mike, Canada I spent three months with my host family(接待家庭) in China. It was a lifetime experience. I was able to experience Chinese living and culture, from basic T'ai Chi to the Beijing Opera. I even visited a famous traditional Chinese medicine hospital. Now I have a better understanding of Chinese culture. |
Joanna, Australia I stayed with my host family for five months. My host mother is a Chinese teacher and she is really warm-hearted. With her help, my Chinese has improved a lot. And I have got used to a new culture. My favorite part of the experience was sharing my feelings in China with her. |
Bill, America My host mother is a wonderful cook! She makes me all kinds of traditional Chinese dishes. They are tasty and I like them very much. Just like me, my host parents love to learn about different cultures. They often ask me questions about life in America. |
Cindy, Germany Recently I took part in a program to study Chinese. I lived with a host family in China for six months. My host sister is a really hardworking student. It was amazing to see how she made progress in English. And a close relationship has developed between us. |
I'm Mary. When I was new in junior high school, I knew no one. Most students talked only to people they knew, so I felt lonely. I had to come home crying. Mother asked me what the worst time was and I said it was at lunch time.
She said, "You are not the only lonely person. There are others that are alone. Tomorrow I want you to look around the lunchroom to see if other people are eating by themselves. I want you to go to one of them and ask if you can join him or her.
The next day, I did look around and asked a young girl who was already sitting alone. The young girl was very happy. I shared my story with the girl and the next day we met for lunch and found some other people who were alone. This began a very interesting approach(接近) to life.
The lesson that I learned from that experience have stayed with me all my life. I have few problems approaching new people. I learned that I am not alone. Most people are just like you and me. We all want to be noticed, and to have someone be interested in listening to us.
