"If I could relive my teenage years, I would work much harder at school and not play around so much," said Tom, who works1a waiter now.
"I grew up in a time when life was much2, much easier. There was no need to be present at all classes or at school so I was often3, going fishing or just staying at home listening to music. I4had much interest in studying and I didn't admire those schoolmates who went to university," Tom reflected. "It wasn't that I was lazy; I just liked to5my time enjoying my life and studying stopped me from doing that."
Tom continued, "By the time I was thirty, some of my6had already become managers and family men. I wasn't married and I changed7every six months. I had no money, no house, no steady(稳定的)job, and no dream really."
"It wasn't until I was nearly 40 that I8that I couldn't continue in the way I was going. I thought about going back to school and getting a degree, 9such a wish wasn't as easy as it turned out. Although I wanted to study, my heart wasn't really into studying and so in the end I10. "
My first memory of my childhood is the day when I fell down the stairs at the age of three. I was so upset that I cried for nearly an hour. Finally, I became quiet when I was given a box of chocolates. And luckily, I was not hurt.
The days were very happy before I started going to school, as I had good neighbors to play with from morning till evening. We played games outdoors, dressed as cowboys and rode around on our tricycles (三轮车) happily.
At the age of five, I had to go to kindergarten and at first this turned out to be quite an ordeal for me. To begin with, I felt very sad because I had to leave my family and live among strangers. As the days went by, however, I made a lot of friends in class. I became happy again and looked forward to going to school each morning.
I still remember those days when I was learning to ride a bicycle. On the weekend, my father taught me to ride a bike. I fell and hurt myself several times, but I never gave up. Finally, I was able to join my friends going around the neighborhood on my bike.
Another favorite memory is the end-of-year party held at the kindergarten. I was chosen to play the role of Jack in the play Jack and the Beanstalk. I performed so well that I became famous soon.
What a wonderful childhood I have had! Sometimes I wish I could experience those days again.
A gift card is a card that is issued (发行) by a store. These cards are big money makers for stores. One reason is that when gift card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy, and they spend more money than the gift card is worth. Unused cards are another reason. Stores make millions of dollars because large numbers of people never use their cards again. They either lose them, forget about them, or decide that it's not worth the effort.
Gift cards are becoming very popular in many countries around the world. In the US, they are one of the most popular kinds of gifts. Why? People love the convenience—gift cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The recipient can choose his or her own gift, and the giver does not have to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. A real gift is a better reminder of the person who gave it. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, "I spent some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you." Often a gift card does not send the same message as a real gift. It may seem to say, "I was in a hurry. I didn't have time to think about what you would really like."
In today's world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer connection between the gift-giver and the gift-recipient.
