Jenny is excited to go to school these days. The 13-year-old girl from South Gate Middle School in Los Angeles, US, is taking care of three green abalones(鲍鱼) at school.
The students of Violeta Llamas' science class, including Jenny, have cared for the sea animals since January. The science class has eight teams. Each team takes turns to care for the abalones. Team Five—Jenny, Alexis, Jennifer and Ricardo—have now got their turn.
The abalones are kept in a box of seawater. Every day, Alexis checks if the water has too much salt. Too much salt is bad for the health of the abalones. Jenny makes fresh seawater. Then the four students work together to clean up the waste in the box and give some food to the abalones.
"Sea life is like a baby. You have to clean them and care for them. " Jennifer said.
Nancy Cruso, a scientist, leads the project. She said the number of green abalones is going down because people have caught too many of them. She said protecting the sea lives now depends on the young students.
"The students love taking care of the abalones. " said Llamas.
"Taking care of the abalones could open the door for those who want to be a sea life scientist or an environment protector," she said.
The students' time with the abalones will end this school year. Cruso and a team of volunteers will record the abalones and then let them return to the sea.
An old man died and left his son a lot of money. But the son was a foolish young man, and he quickly spent all the money, so that soon he had nothing left. Of course, when that happened, all his friends left him. When he was quite poor and alone, he went to see Mr. Smith, who was a kind, clever old man and often helped people when they had troubles.
"My money has ran out and my friends have gone," said the young man. "What will happen to me?
"Don't worry, young man," answered Mr Smith. "Everything will soon be all right again. Wait, and you will soon feel much happier. "
The young man was very glad. "Am I going to get rich again then?" he asked Mr. Smith.
"No, I didn't mean that," said the old man. "I meant that you would soon get used to being poor and to having no friends. "
Rock climbing(攀岩)did not become a sport until in the late 19th century.
While rock climbing may still be necessary for mountain climbing, most people just climb low mountains for fun.
If you have ever done rock climbing, you will know that it is not a very easy sport. What most people don't know is that rock climbing is one of the sports that depend on your body and mind(意志).
To climb successfully, one must use wonderful skills. Another important rule is that your arms only hold you close to the rock face while your legs are pushing you up. The closer you are to the rock face, the easier it is to climb.
Once you start to learn how to climb, you'll find more fun. People who like games such as chess playing or problem—solving may love rock climbing, because they are nearly the same in the way of thinking. Anyone who enjoys a difficult game and loves the outdoors should think of taking rock climbing as a new hobby.
A. One of the important rules is to always have three parts of your body on the rock face. B. Rock climbing has a really long history. C. But now it has become a popular outdoor activity. D. For anyone who wants to get into beautiful shape, rock climbing is a fun and good way. E. Rock climbing is a wonderful sport. F. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing both need practice. |
In 1990, when I (be) nine years old, I wanted very much to find pen friend. I found Ashley's address in a magazine, and decided (write) to her. I sent off my letter with a little hope. Very quickly, I received her letter. my surprise, Ashley was only one month (old) than me. I learned some new expressions from her. I (real) liked this new friend.
Letter after letter, year after year, Ashley and I continued to write to one another. A letter would be received and I'd write back right away. We would send each other birthday and festival (gift).
Eight years later, my parents decided it was time me to meet this friend. They drove me down to Mississippi for a few days. We (have)a fun time together. We did the things that teenage girls love to do.
Twenty—five years after the (one) letter, Ashley and I still have an amazing friendship. Although we don't write letters now, we communicate through mobile phones and the Internet.
