    Swimming and English Learning

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.

Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English - speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.

Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.

Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.

Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.

Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.

    1. (1) We should learn English by ________.
      A . listening and speaking B . reading and writing C . A and B D . swimming
    2. (2) What will you do with mistakes when you speak?

    3. (3) We can listen to English ________, according to the passage.
      A . by train B . on the radio C . every minute D . now and then

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight.

Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and nonflowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽) , Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

    1. (1) The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.
A . plants are important for life B . plants cannot grow without air C . there are many plants in the world D . we can not live without water
    2. (2) Plants can make food from ________.
A . flower, water and air B . water, sunlight and air C . air, water and soil D . air, sun and light
    3. (3) What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A . Of all living things animals are most important. B . Spores are seeds. C . All fruits of flowering plants have seeds. D . Without plants, man will die out.

Make eye contact with everyone you talk to. It is so easy to look at the floor, the ceiling, anywhere but into the other person's eyes. Looking directly at someone makes them see you in a different light. If they think you are confident, you will become more confident! If you find it really hard, look just above the eyes, and they will never know.

Think of four or five things you could start a conversation with and then find at least one opportunity each day to talk to a new person.  Just exchanging a few words will get you used to talking to new people and you can gradually deal with it well as your confidence grows. Asking people something about themselves is often a good opener as it encourages them to talk!

Nowadays, cars have become a very common vehicle in our life. As the most important transport, cars have improved our modern life in many ways. However, cars also bring about so many problems for people, which should be given more attention than any time before.

Cars give people the ability to travel to any place they like. Many people begin to travel frequently. This helps people connect with each other better than before. A more obvious influence from cars is the large number of jobs that they create. Jobs in several fields open up thanks to cars, such as jobs in car factories, gas stations and highways. This is a huge positive influence on society because they greatly reduce the unemployment rate.

At the same time, the problems that cars cause seem to be more and more serious. A mass use of cars is bound to have some negative consequences. The widespread use of cars has led to serious traffic jams in cities. They have resulted in are reduction in the use of public transportation in many cities. The need to use and develop public transportation has been much discussed and confirmed. And also, car accidents create a number of injuries and deaths. There are hundreds of thousands of them worldwide every year. Gas let out from the engines of cars pollutes the air in cities around the world. Air pollution creates serious health problems and causes many people to die from it. It has become one of the most serious problems today. Efforts to develop pollution-free engines may be the final solution to this problem.

In conclusion, people should not only enjoy the benefits of cars, but also aim to deal with the problems cars have created. At the same time, the government should improve city traffic systems, encourage people to use public transportation, make efforts to improve road safety and encourage the usage of fuels that are low in pollutants. Only in these ways can the benefits of cars outweigh their harmfulness.
