Do you get lots of reading tasks as part of your homework? You might wish that you could read faster. There are some people who have said that you can learn to read at high speeds. But experts haven't agreed 1what they have said.
"Speed reading is not actually possible," said Schotter, a scientist at the University of the US. Schotter 2 that those teach others how to speed read are usually doing it by selling courses and books to make money.
In fact, speed reading 3since 1959, when Mr Wood introduced a speed reading program. Several US presidents have even asked their 4 to take speed reading courses.
However, there is no real science behind speed reading.
Schotter explained that reading is a complicated (复杂的) task. It includes four stages: a word, retrieving (检索) 5meaning from your memory, 6 it to other word, in the same sentence, and then moving on to the next word. This process uses many parts of the brain at one time. It can't be sped up.
Some people who are able to speed read 7 simply skimming (扫读). Skimming includes reading a passage quickly and only looking for 8 word or sentence. Skimmer can find out the main idea of a passage—especially if it's a topic they've known about—but they9be able to recall all of the details(细节).
So is there a way to become a faster reader? Research suggests you try to 10you vocabulary and read more.
Sports movies are never just about sports. They are stories of the human spirit. But the best ones always make you want to stand up. Several sports movies will come out in China this year. Take a look at three of them. |

A water bearer (搬运工) in India had two buckets(水桶). One small bucket had a crack (裂缝) and the other large was perfect. One always came home full and the other was not.
This went on. The water bearer carried one and a half buckets full of water to his owner's house. The poor cracked bucket was ashamed of (羞愧) itself. One day it spoke to the bearer by the river.
"I am ashamed of myself, and I want to say sorry."
"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"
"I have been able to hold only half. Because of my crack, you have to do all this work, and you don't get full value for your efforts," said the bucket.
The bearer felt sorry and said, "As we return to the owner's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the road." As they went up the hill the cracked bucket noticed the beautiful flowers and this made it feel better.
The bearer said, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side, but not on the other side? I planted flower seeds(种子) on your side, and every day while we took water to the owner's house from the river, you have watered them. "
We are all "cracked buckets". But we shouldn't be ashamed, because we can be the cause of beauty. We can also find our good points.
Inspiration can be a strange thing. You never know when it might hit. And sometimes, it can come from the most unexpected places.
I recently read about an author(作家) named Okorafor. When she was in college, she had a serious spine disorder(脊椎病). Okorafor was told that a simple operation(手术) could fix it.
But when she woke up from her operation, she found that she couldn't move her legs and was in great pain.
Okorafor got well later. But before she did, she saw strange things in her hospital room.
She imagined her pain as a beast(野兽)that hunted her from the shadows. But she also imagined a woman-a woman who could fly, in fact. This magical woman inspired her and helped her forget her pain. "I felt greater than myself. I felt myself become greater," she wrote in her book Broken Places & Outer Spaces: Finding Creativity in the Unexpected.
We never know where we might find the inspiration to create. As a musician, most of my inspiration comes from other people's music. But I also find ideas in other places. Books, movies and even just moments in everyday life can lead to new creations.
For example, I recently watched the film Blade Runner. I've seen it plenty of times before; it's one of my favorite movies. But this time, for some reason, I saw it differently. I decided to make music that could create the same feeling as the film. It's not done yet, but the movie's setting and characters impacted the music I'm working on now heavily.
Anything can inspire us. You just have to be ready to catch inspiration when it hits.
These days, many pictures of Chinese students wearing winged-hats have been popular online. Many people say the hats look like those worn during the Song Dynasty.
It's true that in the Song Dynasty, public officers wore hats that had two long wing-like flaps (长翅). . He was the first emperor of the dynasty.
One day, when listening to a minister's report Zhao noticed that many ministers were whispering (耳语) to each other and not respecting(尊重) rules. He required that wings should be added to the ministers' hats.
Using a metal plate, the "wings" prevented the ministers from talking to others sitting beside them.
l though the story is recorded in a book from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), some historians think the story may not be true. As they were not convenient to wear, the hats gradually disappeared in later dynasties.
A. Zhao came up with an idea. B. Since then, the order had been kept. C. They use the hats to practice social distancing when they return to school. D. The wing-like flags might just be a decoration (装饰). E. According to one story, the hats were made by Zhao Kuangyin. |

China started to measure (测量) the of Mount Qomolangma on April 30, but bad weather delayed (推迟) the plan for the time. But on May 27th, eight members of a Chinese team reached it at 11 am. The support of the modern technical means (技术手段)makes this much convenient.
Since China was in 1949, Chinese have had six measurements researches on Mount Qomolangma. 8,848. 13 meters and 8,844. 43 meters were ever in 1975 and 2005.
This not only offers valuable data (数据), but also makes us feel of our country.
On March 30, Yoshiro Mori, the head of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Organizing Committee (委员会), said that the Summer Olympic Games in Japan would be held on July 24th according to the plan. However, it is changed to open on July 23rd next year due to COVID-19.
Its mascot (吉祥物) called Miraitowa is a blue robot full of sense of future. The delay(推迟) of the 32nd Olympic Games in Tokyo, the first city in Asia to hold the Games, will cost "several hundred million dollars," said Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee.
One main loss (损失) caused by the delay is tourism (旅游业), which is an in part for Japan. There are 7,800,000 tickets for the Olympics, many of which have all ready been sold. But because of the delay, many tourists may decide to cancel their trips.

In recent years, a growing number of Chinese books and movies have been translated into other languages. Many of the translators are young people who are interested in learning Chinese culture.
Anna Holmwood is one of them. Before she translated in Yong's novel Legends of the Condor Heroes(《射雕英雄传》), the writer was little known to English readers. One reason for this is that his works were too difficult to translate.
But Anna managed to do it. Attracted by the book's themes as well as Chinese philosophy(哲学), Anna hoped to bring it to Englishmen. After five years of work, the translated book came out in 2018. It was printed seven times in several months in the UK. Many people think Anna did a good job of explaining things that are “untranslatable”.
Learning history at the University of Oxford, Anna began to learn Chinese at 21 after a trip in China. She calls herself "a clumsy(笨拙的) student, just like Guo Jing, but with a truthful heart".
As more young people learn to translate Chinese texts and films, more Chinese stories will become available to the world.
