Once there was a very rich man. He had a lot of money, but he wasn't happy at all. He didn't know the purpose (目标) of his life. (连词) the rich man asked a clever old man for help.
The old man (take) him to a window and asked him, " What can you see (介词) the glass (玻璃)?"
The man said, "I can see people coming and going along the street And there is a poor man (ask) for food."
Then the old man took him to a large mirror (镜子) and said, "Now look in (冠词) mirror and tell me what you see."
After (look) at the mirror for some time, the man said, "I can only see myself."
The old man looked at the rich man (smile) and said, "Did you find that both the glass of the window and the mirror are made of the same thing? The only difference (差别) (be) that there is a silver coating (银色涂层) on the mirror. So all you can See is (you) in the mirror. It is the same with people. You will be able to see the others when you take away that silver coating. It covers (遮住) your (eye). When you can see the others and feel compassion (同情) and 10ve for them, you'll find the purpose of your life and feel happy."
A taxi hit a truck. A policeman spoke to the taxi driver and the truck driver. He also spoke to Tom. Tom was a witness(目击者). This is what they said.
Truck driver: I was driving from the airport to Newtown. A car crossed the road, so I slowed down. I did not stop. A taxi hit the back of my truck. Nobody was badly hurt but both vehicles were damaged.
Taxi driver: I was driving behind a truck a few kilometres from Newtown. The truck stopped suddenly. The driver did not give me a warning. I was driving very slowly. I could not pass the truck because there were two cars coming near from Newtown. My taxi hit the truck, and some glass cut my left hand.
Tom: I saw the traffic accident about a kilometre from the airport. A truck was going to Newtown. It was not going very fast. There was a taxi about two hundred metres behind the truck. It was going fast. When the truck slowed down, the taxi hit it. The taxi driver was not looking at the truck. He was looking out of the window at something. My friend saw the accident too.
Tom's friend spoke to the policeman and agreed with Tom.
