The British Museum is one of the biggest museums in the world. Inside, you feel smaller than usual.
The story of the British Museum goes back to three hundred years ago to one unusual man, Sir Hans Sloane, doctor to King George II. The doctor collected books, drawings, clothes, money, animals, flowers, things from all over the world. The doctor wanted everything to stay together when he died, so that people could come and have a look. King George I gave his library, and the museum started to grow.
The British Museum opened in 1759, six years after Sir Hans Sloane died. At first the museum was only open three days a week and only ten people could enter in an hour. There wasn't much time to see things.
By about 1800, things began to get better than before. Wonderful statues, three thousand years old, arrived from Egypt. King George IV sold all his books to the museum secretly. A hundred years ago, not only old books but also new ones arrived at the museum, and more people came to read them. Since then many famous men have written and studied there. There are four kilometres of new shelves every year and there are about two million visitors every year.

Dear Michael,
How's your vacation? I'm visiting my uncle in Spain. He lives in the sunny and beautiful city of Valencia. in Spain.
Yesterday, I had great fun. My uncle took me to the Tomato Festival in Bunol, which is just 30 miles away from where my uncle lives. You have probably never heard of this festival before. Neither had L. The Tomato Festival is called "La Tomatina" in Spanish. It was the biggest and messiest (最混乱的) tomato fight in the world. When we first got t0 the square where the festival took place, it was very crowded with people from all around the world, and many trucks were carrying tomatoes. My uncle told me the number of the people here was around 38,000 and this was more than four times the population of Bunol.
The tomato fight started as soon as the first banger was beaten. Then everyone, including me, started throwing tomatoes at each other. I took red tomatoes and threw them at anyone that ran, moved, bent down, or turned around. Tomatoes must be squashed before people threw them in order not 10 hurt anybody.
After a little while, the streets, people and nearby buildings were splashed with red, There was no winner in this fight, but we all had fun. As soon as a second banger was beaten. people stopped throwing.
I really had a great time. I wish you were here too. I hope I can hear from you.
With love,
Linda

I was travelling alone through the UK. To reach places that were off the public transportation map, I bought an old car, which cost most of my money. I couldn't afford to stay in a hotel, so I had to camp in my car for the rest of the trip.
One morning I woke up in my old car on a country road in Ireland and saw a single house, The water in my thermos(保温瓶) had gone cold, so I knocked on the door of the house. A woman opened it. I asked her for some hot water. But she wouldn't let me get away with just that! I was invited indoors. She asked me to sit at the table and have breakfast with her family. They filled my thermos before I left.
I was greatly moved. And I decided to pass the kindness on. The other day I met a young man who had been driving around to look for a parking lot. He looked increasingly upset. I was glad that I was able to point one out to him. His thankful smile was the hugest reward(奖赏) for me.

Mr Lee was in bed and was trying to go to sleep when he heard the bell ring. He turned on the and looked at his clock. It was twelve o'clock, "Who can it be at this time of night?" he thought. He decided to go and find out. So he got up, put on his dressing gown (睡袍) and went to the door. When he opened the door, there was there. "That is very strange." Then he went back to his bedroom, took off his dressing gown, went back to bed, turned off the light and tried to go to sleep.
A few minutes later he heard the bell ring again. Mr Lee jumped out of bed very and rushed to the door. He opened it, but again be found no one there. He closed the door and tried not to feel angry. Then he saw a piece of paper on the floor. He it up. There were some words on it, "It is now after midnight, so it is April Fool's Day. April fool to you!"
"Oh, it was the English boy next door!" Mr Lee exclaimed (惊叫) and almost smiled. He went back to bed and at once. The bell didn't ring again.
Have you ever had problems in your life and don't know how to be happy? If so, you will find "Being a Happy Teenager" (write) by the Australian writer, Andrew Matthews, useful.
Andrew Matthews is a writer, cartoonist and speaker. His books have been translated into many languages. He has been on over 2,000 (radio) and TV programmes. In this book, Matthews tells us how (have) a happy life and answers the questions of teenagers.
There are many topics such as parents and friends, and the book says we should stop (be) angry and forgive. The book tells us about (use) skills such as how to put what you have learned into pictures in your mind to make your memory better. Many teenagers think that (happy) comes from good exam marks or praise from other people, But you can still be happy when there are no such "good" things.
(succeed) comes from a good attitude. If you learn from (problem), you will have success in the future. Some schoolboys have problems such as (be) too tall or too short. But Matthews tells us happiness comes from (think) about things in a positive way,
If you are tall, people notice you and you can get a better view at the cinema; if you are short, your clothes and shoes take up less room in your bedroom! This is Matthews' most important lesson: you choose to be happy!
The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day. American children of all ages give their mothers something special. It is the day children, young and old, try to show their love to mothers, It is the day to celebrate motherhood and to thank her for all small and big things she has done for her children. However, do you know that Mother's Day celebration is not a recent thing?
England was the first country to set a day to mothers. In the United States, Mother's Day became an official holiday in 1914. An American woman, Anna, asked governors to set a festival for mothers for their love. And they set the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a year later all the other states celebrated it.
On Mother's Day morning, some American children serve their mothers breakfast in bed. Other children will give their mothers presents which they have made themselves or bought in shops. Adults give their mothers red carnations (康乃馨), the official Mother's Day flowers. If their mothers left the world, they might bring white carnations to their grave sites (基地). This is the busiest day of the year for American restaurants. On the special day, family members do not want mothers to cook dinner!
