You speak, write a letter, 1 a telephone call. Your words carry a message, people communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate 2 words? A smile on your face shows you are happy and friendly. Tears in your eyes tell 3 that you are sad. When you put up your hand in class, the teacher knows you want 4 something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying 5. You nod and people know you are saying yes. Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus 6. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you 7 noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them 8? People can communicate 9 many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things.
Books are written to tell you about all wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radio and films all help us to communicate with other people. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and 10 other people are thinking about.
Sing the Language You're Learning
How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
"Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way," said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, "A listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area."
Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D. C.depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, "I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics(诗). So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.""Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I would speak much better English than now," Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you're still struggling(奋斗) in learning a language, why not try singing it out?
One day, a farmer was walking along a road with his son Thomas. The father said, "Look! There's a horseshoe. Pick it up and put it in your bag." Thomas said, "It isn't worth (值得) the trouble." His father said nothing but picked it up himself. When they got to a nearby town, they had a rest. There the farmer sold the horseshoe and with the few pennies he bought some cherries.
The father and the son continued their way. The sun was well up in the sky, and there wasn't a house or even a tree where they could have a rest. Thomas felt too thirsty to walk on. At this time, his father dropped a cherry on the ground and Thomas picked it up quickly and ate it. After a while, his father dropped another cherry and once again, his son lost some time in picking it up and putting it in his mouth.
And so they went on. The old farmer dropped the cherries and the son picked them up. When Thomas had eaten up all the cherries, his father said to him, "My dear son, if you had bent(弯腰) down earlier to pick up that horseshoe, it would not have been necessary for you to bend so many times for the cherries. Always remember the lesson that anyone who does not worry about the little things will find that he cannot do the great things.
On the second Sunday in May is Mother's Day. American children of all ages give their mothers something special. On the day children, young and old, try to show their love to mothers. It is the day to celebrate motherhood and to thank her for all small and big things she has done for her children. However, do you know that Mother's Day celebration is no recent thing?
England was the first country to set a day for mothers. In the United States, Mother's Day became an official holiday in 1910.An American girl, Anna, asked her governor(统治者) to set a festival for mothers for their love. And they set the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a year later all the other states celebrated it.
On Mother's Day morning some American children serve their mothers breakfast in bed.Other children will give their mothers presents which they have made themselves or bought in stores.Adults give their mothers red carnations(康乃馨), the official Mother's Day flower. If their mothers left the world they may bring white carnations to their grave sites(墓地). This is the busiest day of the year for American restaurants. On this special day, family members do not want Mom to cook dinner!
You are on the street in New York and need to get to the nearest subway. Or you are in London and try to find the bus to take you to Hyde Park ... This should be easy. Here is some advice on how to ask for directions in a foreign country. Hope it helps.
Know your location
You can always communicate where you want to go by knowing the place that you're going to. Whatever it is, if you do a bit of homework before you leave on your trip, you can ask for directions much more easily.
Carry a map or picture
If you are uncertain about your pronunciation when asking for directions in a non-native language, it helps to carry a map or picture of where you want to go. People can see where exactly your destination (目的地) is and point you in the right direction. As the old saying goes, "A picture can say a thousand words."
Use body language
Often travelers have to be like silent film (无声电影) actors when asking for directions. For example, you can draw in the air a shape of the Eiffel Tower with your fingers to give people an idea of where you are going.
All in all, whatever difficulty you may face, don't get upset. Keep calm (镇静的) and be polite when asking for directions.
A. Finally, you'll find your way. B. It may be a place of interest, a famous site, or an address. C. Carrying a pen to have them draw you a map is helpful, too. D. But if you aren't sure where you're going and don't speak the language, it can be a problem. E. It sounds silly, but being able to use your hands, fingers, and even facial expressions can make strangers understand where you want to go F.Wherever you go, you will have fun. |
What aboutto practice pronunciation?
