September is the time for students to go back to school! For Chinese students, most schools start on the same day. We will share summer stories with the same classmates 1 the first—year students. But in American schools, students get ready for classes a little 2.
First of all, American schools don't all start on the same day. Classes begin any time between August and September. Every 3 decides when to begin its classes. If summer is too 4 then schools will usually start a little later.
Every year we usually see the same teachers and classmates, but American students have some big changes. In American high schools teachers divide 5 into different levels. Students can choose their favourite teachers and courses according to their abilities and 6. This means that every year American students will 7 different classrooms or different classes. They will meet 8 classmates and teachers in each one. Also, students will go to school a few days early to get their 9 so that they can know the classes every day.
For first—year students, the first day of school also means they finally get their own lockers. Primary school students in the USA have to share lockers with their 10.
Long ago, there lived in Greece a learned man. He was so well-known for his good knowledge of almost everything that lots of people from all over the country came to learn from him. The great man taught his students whole-heartedly and answered their questions with great patience. One day a student asked him, “My dear teacher didn't you say you yourself have many, many more questions about things than we do? But I think we students have far more than you.
With a smile on his face, the teacher drew two circles, one as large as a big cake, the other smaller. Then he said, "Of course, I've learned much more, But it's wrong to think that a teacher has fewer questions than his students. Now, look at these two circles. The inside of the bigger one is my knowledge of things, and the inside of the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, I have to use the longer line to draw the bigger circle. That means I have more opportunities (机会) to face what is still unknown. And that's why I have more questions than you do. The more you learn, the more questions you have. You will never learn enough, you know.
The Diaoyu Islands, which lie in the East China Sea between China and Japan, have belonged to China since ancient times.
The islands are 120 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan, 200 nautical miles west of the Chinese mainland and 200 nautical miles east of Japan's southern island, Okinawa.
Geologically(从地理上来说), the islands are attached to Taiwan. The waters around the islands are 100 to 150 metres deep and there is a 2,000-metre-deep oceanic trench between the islets and Okinawa islands.
The islands have appeared on maps of China since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Fishermen from Taiwan and Fujian and other provinces have fished and collected herbs in this area for many generations.
Records about the islands came out in a book during the rule of Ming emperor Yong Le (1403-1424), more than 400 years before Japan says it discovered the Diaoyu islands in 1884.
When you are in England, you must be very careful in the street because the traffic drives on the left. Before you cross a street, you must look to the right first and then the left. If the traffic lights are red, the traffic must stop. People on foot can cross the road carefully. If the traffic lights are green, the traffic can go and people on foot mustn't cross. In the morning and in the evening when people go to or come from work, the streets are very busy.
When you go by bus in England, you have to be careful too. Always remember the traffic moves on the left. Have a look first, or you will go the wrong way. In many English cities, there are big buses with two floors. You can sit on the second floor. From there you can see the city well. It is very interesting.
Have you seen Avatar(《阿凡达》)? It's a popular3Dflm, and you may have to wear 3D glasses to see it. The 3D glasses make the images(图像) from the film look as if they are coming straight towards you.
More and more 3D films are coming to theatres. Some say that 3D TV sets will come into our homes in the near future. 3D technology can make TV and films more exciting. However, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3D films. Why?
When we look at an object(物体), each eye sees it at a different angle. Our eyes send the two images to our brain(大脑), and the brain puts them together. 3D technology uses two film projectors(投影机). One projects a left—eye image and the other projects a right—eye image. 3D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye. So, when we are watching a 3D film, our brain can't put together the images. The brain needs to work harder at reading "the images. That makes it easier for people with eye problems to get dizzy(头晕的) or have headaches. A famous eye doctor said if your eyes can't focus(聚焦)on the same object at once, you will have trouble watching 3D films.
All over the world the need for laptops and smartphones increases each year. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device(移动设备) has once logged on to a public Wi-Fi network without paying for it, while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public Wi-Fi network safe?
Some networks are better protected than others because encryption (加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dates, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open Wi-Fi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers (黑客) to break into the operating system and get people's private information.
Most smartphones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to Wi-Fi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted Wi-Fi networks. When these smartphones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information.
So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our smartphones in public places which offer free Wi-Fi networks, please think it twice on take safe measures before using them.
