There are many different kinds of disasters around the world. As an adult you know what to do during a disaster, but what about the children? Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don't teach their children what to do. Before it's too late, here are ways to help you prepare your children for a disaster.
Educate: It is always good to let your children know about possible disasters. This doesn't mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, keep the conversation positive (积极的) by telling them there is a solution (解决办法) to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, allow for questions and answer them honestly.
Prepare: Always be prepared. And that is the best piece of advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your children what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them, if ever needed.
Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your children for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with "listen to an adult's advice and/or call 119".
Practise: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practise every few months. Practising what to do during a disaster with your children will help them if the time comes.
Disasters can't be avoided but they can belessened once you are prepared and ready for one.
Have youheard of e-waste (电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with yourcomputers, MP4 players or mobile phones when they're broken or you want a newone?
Mostpeople just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry (电子产业), e-waste pollution has becomea serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around theworld produced 41.8 million tons (吨) of e—waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggestwaster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.
It'simportant to pay attention to e-waste. It can be either valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is surprising. And themetals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals (有毒化学物质) can get into the earth or air, affecting the environmentand people's health.
Apple, forexample, now recycles people's used products in China when they are buying newones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lowerprices. To help reduce e-waste, we can buy longer-lasting electronic products. If you have unwanted electronics, find a new home for them. You can also takecomputers and phones to companies to see if they offer recycling programs.
Thirteen-year-old Cindy had been bullied (欺凌) at school for about two years. Her bag, keys and mobile phone had been stolen. She had also been knocked off her bicycle, kicked and punched (以拳重击).
Cindy tried to fight back, but it always seemed to be her, not the bullies, who got into trouble. She became so afraid of going to school that she started to be absent from her classes.
Finally, her headmaster set up a special plan, asking students to look after one another. He gave Cindy the courage to play the guitar in a school concert, which gave Cindy new confidence and helped her receive respect from the other students. Gradually, the bullying began to stop.
Cindy's story is not uncommon, but help is out there. All schools in the UK now have to follow strict bullying policies (政策). There are many charities and organizations giving support to young people, such as Bullying UK and Childline. So remember one very important piece of advice: If you are being bullied, don'tput up with it—tell someone.
ClothesDonation (捐赠) Box
Have youever put your old clothes into the donation box in your neighborhood? If not,you can do it right now because the clothes donation is becoming a trend (趋势) in Urumqi.
"Fromtime to time, my mother clears out the clothes which I no longer wear. Youknow, we teenagers are growing fast. I think it's a good way to helpothers." Lin Tao, a junior student says.
"Ioften pick out some of my clothes which are out of style after going shopping. Then I put them into the donation box." Miss Li, a pretty young lady says.
"Thatseems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People caneither wear them or usethem to make things such as handbags and pencilcases," Mrs Wang, an old woman says, "sometimes I also look throughthe box for some nice clothes."
However, there are some problems along with the popularity of clothes donation.Recently, a UTV reporter from Focus on the City has made a survey. Here are theresults:
Some boxesare full of clothes in a short time. There is no more room for people to giveaway clothes.
Somepeople sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of wearingthem.
Somecommunities set the boxes in unsuitable places. So there are few clothes in it.
Manyclothes are too old and shabby (破烂的).
"What's worse," one of the staff in a community added,"we quite often see people throw rubbish into the box when they pass by.We've tried to stop them several times but failed. It has been the most seriousproblem since we set the box."
In orderto make the donation box work in an efficient (有效的) way, our government is taking action. Clothesdonation will be better-organized and it'll be more convenient for people inneed to take the clothes away.
Nowadays we can see more and more electric bikes in the street. Electric bikes 61. (be) easy to ride. They run fast and make no (pollute). They become very popular, the electric bikes also cause more traffic accidents. So China plans (make) a new rule for the electric bike riders. If an electric bike is (heavy) than 40 kilos and can go faster than 20 kilometers an hour, its rider must get a license. It means some riders have to pass driving tests before they ride (them) electric bikes on the road.
People have different ideas after (hear) the plan. Some welcome the plan. A bus driver said happily, " a good plan! I think it will make the street much safer." Some are not happy with the new rules at all. One rider said (sad), "I don't want to get a license. It's not convenient me to get one." Some don't care about it. A young rider said calmly, "I prefer to use shared bikes which are popular in many big cities of China now. I hope they can come to Loudi earlier!"
GreenHome campaigners (发起者) really love the natural world. In fact, we love it so much that we're determined (决心) to do our best to protect it. For that, we need money too. GreenHome can be strong only with the support from people like you.
If the joy of walking through the green forest, the excitement of climbing ancient rocks, or even the simple pleasure of watching wildlife in its own habitat (栖息地) really moves you, then share GreenHome's idea of the world. Please turn that idea into some support today.
So take action right now! Even a very small amount, like$1a month, will soon build up into a valuable contribution (贡献) to protecting the natural world we love so much. We'll also use it to develop ways to deal with environmental problems.
Think about it in another way. If you want a future where you can continue to do the things you love in the great outdoors, you need to make sure you've got great outdoors to do them in. And this way is simple enough—that's got to be worth $1 a month.
A. Giving GreenHome your support is one way that you can do. B. But determination alone will not protect the environment. C. That's why we're asking you to join us today. D. And we won't just use it to stop bad things. E. Everything we do costs money. |
