There was a small village near the mountain. There were a lot of trees in the mountain. People in the 1always got something from the mountain, such as animals and trees. When they wanted to 2a house, they cut down the trees. And they also killed the animals for 3. Trees were very 4in their daily life. They made tables, chairs 5beds by cutting down the trees. In addition, when they 6meals, they still used some trees for wood. However, they only cut down trees but 7planted new trees. So the trees were fewer and fewer and the animals were becoming 8as well.
One summer, it rained 9in the village. The rain lasted for about a week. The soil and the stones on the mountain fell down and soon 10the whole village. They finally realized they couldn't only cut down trees but also needed to protect them.

I am Cindy White. I give more than fifty talks to schools in my country, the USA, every year. This is my first talk at a school in China. I know the life in middle school isn't always perfect. I had all kinds of problems at your age. The biggest one was that I didn't know how to get on well with my classmate Marie from Canada. We liked being with each other, but we often had different opinions (观点). Do you know how we solved the problems and became best friends? Do you have such problems? If your answer is "YES", come to listen to my talk. I'd be glad to share my stories with you and help you enjoy your middle school life better. I'd like to listen to your story and be your friend! Time: 3:30 pm — 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 3rd. Place: Room No. 204 in the Classroom Building Attention (注意事项): ①Don't be late. Please get to Room No. 204 at least ten minutes earlier. ②Don't eat during the talk. ③Prepare a pen and a notebook (笔记本). Come to listen to my talk and tell your problems. Can trees talk? Yes — but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree (柳树) attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them tasteless so that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. The even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapor— a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make themselves taste also terrible, too.
Talking, of course, doesn't need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn't trees have ways of sending messages?
In Caroline's eyes, her dog Sam means more. This special dog has completely changed her life.
Caroline had some hearing loss when she was a child, but she lived a normal life. However, when she was in her twenties, her hearing loss got worse and even simple conversations (交谈) could be very tiring. Since then, she has lived in a quiet world with no sound.
One day when Caroline was shopping in a shop, suddenly she found she was the only person there. All the other people left as soon as the fire alarm rang. But she didn't hear it at all. She knew that it was the time for her to ask for help.
Caroline wrote to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a famous charity in the UK, to ask for a hearing dog. Later the hearing dog Sam came into her life.
Sam alerts (使意识到)Caroline to the alarm clock in the morning. He also alerts her to the doorbell, alarms and smoke alarms. With Sam's help, Caroline can go out whenever and wherever she wants to go.
"With Sam by my side, I now have my confidence back. He can let me know what I need to know," said Caroline excitedly. "I feel safe. I cannot imagine the life without him."
Last summer, Oliver had a two-week holiday in Australia. He was in a group of children coming from different parts of the world, and they had a great time together.
From Brisbane, in Queensland, they went to a beautiful island off the coast of Australia. It is not far from the famous and crowded Frazer Island. Oliver's group stayed in a hotel on the beach on the island, so they could try snorkeling (用通气管潜泳) in the light green water. At night, they went into the water to feed wild dolphins.
After a few days on the island, they went into the inland areas. There Oliver met some famous animals in Australia like kangaroos! During their three days there, they rode horses. Oliver threw a boomerang (回旋镖), too. They cooked their food over a campfire at night, under the stars.
Then they went northwards to the Coral Sea to visit the Great Barrier Reef. This over 2,000-kilometre line of coral (珊瑚) is a magical place. They spent three wonderful days there, swimming in the coolest sea!
Their trip finished in Sydney, a nice city. Oliver really enjoyed his holiday.

Dear Daisy,
Long time no see. How's it going these days? I have a piece of good news to tell you.
My parents (buy) a new flat in the center of the city. The rooms are not big, they are all comfortable. There are more rooms than our old flat. I am (excite) because I have my own bedroom. In the old flat, I shared the bedroom with my sister.
My favorite room in the new flat is my bedroom. I can be alone in it. It is (I) own small world. I can listen to music, read (book) and chat with my friends on the phone. I can also look for things on computer and send e-mails to my e-friends.
The kitchen (be) my favorite room too. I like helping my mother the cooking. My mother is a good cook, and she likes cooking very much. She often teaches me how (make) some different dishes. She lived in Sichuan she was a child, so she likes hot food and she can cook very delicious hot food.
I love our new flat. You're welcome to visit our new flat if you are free.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Linda
