In a small town in France, there was a farmer who lied alone. Every day, he1a pound of butter to his neighbour, who was a baker. One day the baker decided to2the butter to see if he was getting a pound. After he weighed it, he found that he wasn't. The baker then took3farmer to the judge(法官).
The judge asked the farmer if he had any way to weigh the butter. The farmer replied, "I am so4that I do not have enough money to buy anything to weigh it,5I do ha)e a kind of scale(天平)." The judge asked, "Then how do you weigh the butter?" The farmer replied, "Before the baker started buying butter from6, I had bought bread from him. So now every time when I bring home the bread from the baker, I put it on the scale and give him the butter of the same weight."
We7what we give to others in life. Whenever you take action, ask yourself this8, "Am I honest?"
Honesty or dishonesty can become9. Some dishonest people can lie(说谎)without a red face. Others lie so much that they do not e)en10what the truth is any more. But who is it bad for? As a matter of fact, those who lie will hurt themselves by their own dishonest behaviour.
I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very thankful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was surprised. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible(负责的) for my injury(受伤), I'd have to have a good lawyer(律师). And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair(公平的) that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report only has ten lines, and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he didn't want to see me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Because of my inexperience, I told the insurance(保险) company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time…and I left without getting a cent.

Emergencies(紧急情况) don't happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help first. No one wants to spend time looking up the phone numbers.
In 1968, the Untied States government wanted one number that people could call for emergencies. They decided that 911 was easy to remember and people could dial it quickly. The very first 911 call was made on February 16, 1968 in Alabama. Today, 911 is used for emergencies in most parts of the United States and many parts of Canada.
Other countries may use other numbers. In Great Britain, it's 959. If you're not sure which emergency number is used in your area, check your phone book.
When to call
Never call 911 as a joke or just to see what might happen. The only time you should call 911 is when a person is badly hurt or in danger right now! So call when there is a fire, a car accident, or sudden illness, etc.
When in an emergency call
When you dial the 911 operator(接线员), it's always OK to give out your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what's happening. What happened? Where are you? Who needs help?
Don't hang up(挂断)!
If you have to call 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it's OK to do so. That way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast.
A dog named Faith dialed 911 when her owner who was in a wheelchair fell and needed help. She had been taught to use a speed-dial(快速拨号) function.
The problem started when the family moved and Chris switched schools. He made friends with new kids, some of whom used drugs(毒品) . When one friend died in the hospital from an overdose(过量),Chris thought, “That'll never happen to me. Since I'm mostly smell the drug, I won't have any problems.
At 16, he lefthome without telling them where he was going. Just because his parents tried to change his mind .He lasted two weeks working at a pizza shop , and then he started selling cocaine. “I'll only do this until I get back on my feet(独立的)," he told himself.
Chris's family found him living alone in a rundown(荒芜的) part of town. A school friend had called the family to tell them where he was. “It probably saved my life,”Chris says. “I was half-dead.”
To pay for Chris to enter a drug treatment center, his dad took a second job. Chris is grateful to getting treatment. Now he's able to see colors again. In the depths of his addiction he saw everything in black and gray.
