In most parts of the world, as far back as anyone can remember , there has been a puppet (木偶) tradition. Although some of us think of puppets as children's entertainment, they were—-and often still are used to tell serious stories to adult audiences. Even in these days of special effects, the puppet the atre still has a special place in many cultures.
The best known puppet characters in Britain are Punch and Judy, glove puppets with woodenheads. In summer, one basic play of about half an hour is performed on beaches all around Britain .Mr. Punch, who has an enormous nose and wears a curved hat, gets into trouble and has arguments with his wife, Judy. A policeman, a crocodile, and a hangman, and all of them run after Mr. Punch. He, of course, invariably manages to survive to fight another day.
In Belgium wooden puppets first appeared in the 1820s in cities like liege. The liege puppets are in fact string puppets without strings! They have a single rod (棒) attached to their heads, which means the puppeteers aren't able to raise the arms and legs, but can move the body up and down and the head from side to side. Many of the stories used to be historical or religious but it is Tchantches, a comic character with patched trousers and a big black hat, who is the best loved character today. Like Mr. Punch, he is a simple man who is also greedy, quarrelsome and lazy. He makes fun of everyone, but is often warm--hearted and tender.
Animals in Odd Places
Tree Goats
These goats will do a lot for their favorite snacks-including climbing to the top of a 9-m-tall tree! Every summer the argan trees in southwest Morocco produce bitter-tasting fruit that the local goats can't resist. And these peckish goats are doing us humans a favour — when they spit (for sometimes poo!) out the indigestible nut inside the argan fruit, the nuts can be collected to make an oil that's used in hair products and food!
City Whales
They're not visiting the Empire State Building — they're on the lookout for food! Humpback whales are swimming back in the waters off the coast of New York City in the USA. Why? Years of cleanup efforts in the Hudson River — a tidal estuary where fresh and salt water meet — have brought back algae, zooplankton and fish. And the humpbacks, which are the ultimate foodie tourists, weren't far behind! So far this year there have been an incredible 377 sightings.
Forest Penguins
Fiordland crested penguins prefer the warm waters and misty rainforest of southwest New Zealand to the icy Antarctic! With smaller bodies than many cold-weather penguins (such as emperors), the flightless birds live in balmy 21℃. And their eggs stay toasty in this warmer habitat, too, tucked away in caves, bushes and tree stumps where males sit on the nests.
Ocean Sloths
Pygmy three-toed sloths might be slow climbers, but when they get into the water, they're powerful paddlers! These special sloths, which only live in the mangroves of a tiny island off the coast of Panama in Central America, plop into the sea when they want to move to a new tree. Their tummies are often filled with gas due to their leafy diet, so they stay afloat easily-and they can move three times faster in the water than they can on the ground. But since we're talking about sloths, that's really saying much!
A Japanese company has ordered all of its 2,700 employees to get identical (一模一样的) hairstyles. For men, the preferred cut is short on the sides and back but longer on top. For women, the company prefers a bob with a longer fringe (刘海) that can be swept to one side. This unusual request is its effort to help the country save energy.
The spokeswoman for the Tokyo-based construction firm Maeda Corporation Chizuru Inoue explained, "Our company is eager to protect the environment and we encourage our staff to carry out many environment-friendly actions."
She added, "We are not sure of the data yet, but we believe if people have short hair, they do not need to use their hair driers for so long and they will use less water. If all our employees do this, then we may save a lot of power." Some staff are confused about which style they must have and have been asking which salons (美容院) give the best cut.
The energy-saving move is part of a national campaign to reduce energy consumption (消耗) following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Japan has been struggling to produce enough electricity since the tsunami (海啸) ended production at the Fukushima plants. The disaster resulted in a review of the country's energy policy that now means less than a quarter of its remaining nuclear plants are in use. The government has talked about a move away from nuclear energy towards more sustainable (能持续的) technologies. Many government departments have taken measures to save power, including a reduced use of air conditioning in offices and schools. Many employees cannot turn down the air conditioner below 27 degrees in the hottest summer months.
How to Protect Yourself from Hackers Online
An increase in cyber-attacks (网络攻击) makes the Internet seem like a scary place these days. How can individuals protect or make it more difficult for hackers to access their information? Here are several tips that can help you protect against cyber-attacks:
Hard passwords include upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. They should be at least eight characters in length. They should also not spell out words easy for hackers to find, like your pet's name or the name of a family member.
Change your password regularly
A very common mistake made by users is to create one hard password, but then never change it. Remembering a long list of complicated passwords can be difficult. But no password is unbreakable. Hackers are better able to hack multiple accounts if those accounts all have the same password. A password management service, like Dashlane or PasswordBox, can help you keep track of hard passwords.
Clear your browser (浏览器) history
This goes for all the devices you use in a day – your home computer, your work computer, or your friend's iPad. Internet browsers like Firefox or Chrome keep track of where you've been and what you've done online. They keep records of every site you visited. It is very easy for anyone who sees that information to steal a detailed record of your online activities.
Do not use free Wi-Fi
Often, a user does not need a password to connect to these wireless networks. These services might be useful, but they're also an easy way for hackers to access everything on your device.
Use anti-virus protection
There are many anti-virus services available for users. Some anti-virus services are even free. They are a great way to have a professional help keeping users one step ahead of hackers.
A. Be careful while using thumb drive.
B. These services permit users to easily store and secure their passwords.
C. Make your password harder to hack.
D. They can offer many different types of computer protection.
E. An increasing number of public places now offer free wireless access to the Internet.
F. Information about what you sent from or saved on your computer can be kept for days or weeks.
G. Unless you really need it, it is best not to use it.
As the saying goes, roses given, fragrance in hand. I am always in the1of giving money to every beggar or homeless person I pass by. My friends say it is not good to2. We may come across beggars or homeless people begging every day and all beggars have their ability to survive. It3them that I never listen.
On a4day, my friend and I were walking to the bus stop5I passed a beggar lady. I had seen her several times before and had always given her a few6. That day, I gave her 2 Euros. I was waiting for the bus and reading a book when I7to see that lady standing in front of me. She8me a piece of paper covered in a plastic bag to prevent it from getting9. She stood there, looking at me10. Putting away my book, I took the paper, which11she and her family had to12their country because of floods, and she was13to support them. She had got a bit of money, but she needed five14Euros to get home. I15into my pockets and found 20 cents. My friend16a 5 Euro note. I asked her to give it to the lady, and said that I would17the next day. When she got the money, the lady hugged us and said thanks again and again, and went on her way. Later on the bus, I wondered where her home was and18she had gotten to this country. In her story, I felt that my friend and I would always remain part of it as the19, who helped her get home on a rainy day. But for me, helping a stranger did bring me happiness, giving me a pleasant 20.
You see them everywhere: people walking with their attention (concentrate)on their smartphone screens on busy streets. But walking and texting can be dangerous and cities in the United States and Europe have stepped their efforts to deal with it.
In Honolulu, using the phones while crossing the street is forbidden. It has passed a law that says “No pedestrian (行人) shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device. In other words, do not look at a screen when you cross the street you could be fined. Honolulu is the first major U.S. city (forbid)what is called “distracted walking”.
People text while walking are nearly four times as likely to have at least one dangerous action. A lot of people do it they know it is dangerous. They tell themselves that it is important.
Using phones while walking may lead to injuries and deaths, but it seems to be a global problem. Pedestrian deaths (increase)as the use of cell phones rises in the past 5 years, and it is expected that the tendency will continue.
Other cities have come up with creative ways to help protect those using cellphones while walking. A small town near Amsterdam has set up special crosswalks with flashing lights on the ground. When the traffic lights turn red or green, do the lights on the ground, reminding pedestrians when it's safe to cross. In a town of Germany, similar lights were used after a teenager using her smart phone was hit and seriously(injure).
If you still want to text while walking you could avoid being fined in Honolulu using voice-controlled digital assistant(数字助手) like Siri or Google Assistant Or you could just wait until you are again, safely off the street.

The big Town Hall clock was string midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When be reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one... However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned around and there stood a man in a large coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very few parts of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at this hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was sill on and the man waited until it went out. About half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground on the other side of the wall.
