As they migrate(迁移), butterflies and moths(飞蛾) choose the winds they want to fly with, and they change their body positions if they start floating in the wrong direction. This new finding suggests that insects may employ some of the same methods that birds use for traveling long distances. Scientists have long thought that insects were simply at the mercy of the wind.

Fascinating as their skills of flight are, migrating behavior has been difficult to study in insects because many long distant trips happen thousands of feet above ground. Only recently have scientists developed technologies that can detect such little creatures at such great heights.

To their surprise, though, the insects weren't passive but active travelers on the winds. In autumn, for example, most light winds blew from the east, but the insects somehow sought out ones that carried them south and they positioned themselves to navigate(导航) directly to their wintering homes.

Even in the spring, when most winds flowed northward, the insects didn't always go with the flow. If breezes weren't blowing in the exact direction they wanted to go, the insects changed their body positions to compensate(抵消). Many migrating birds do the same thing.

The study also found butterflies and moths actively flew within the air streams that pushed them along. By adding flight speeds to wind speeds, the scientists calculated that butterflies and moths can travel as fast as 100 kilometers an hour. The findings may have real-world applications.

With climate warming, migrating insects are growing in number. Knowing how and when these pests move could help when farmers decide when to spray their crops.

    1. (1) What's the main idea of the text?
A . Insects migrate with the seasons B . Wind helps insects greatly in migrating C . insects have real direction D . Scientists have trouble in observing insects
    2. (2) Scientists originally thought that     .
A . insects always waited for their favorable winds B . insects chose the winds they wanted to ride C . insects were just blown about by the wind D . insects positioned themselves in the winds
    3. (3) It is not easy to study the migrating behavior of the insects because     .
A . the little creatures can fly very fast B . their flight is long and high above ground C . the wind's direction is hard to foresee D . they have no regular migrating courses
    4. (4) According to the passage, the findings can     .
A . increase insects in number B . instruct farmers when to spray C . prevent climate warming D . help protect insects

There's a new achievement in 3D printing that's beginning to come into focus: food. Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale(大规模地). And the industry isn't stopping there.

        Food production

With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that—it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to "re-create forms and pieces" of food that are "exactly the same", freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.

        Nutrition

Future 3D food printers could make processed food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, "Food printing could allow consumers(消费者) to print food with customized(定制的) nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday's bread from the supermarket, you'd eat something baked just for you on demand."

        Challenges

Despite recent advancements in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently, most ingredients (烹饪原料) must be changed to a paste(糊状物)before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming, because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most of the 3D food printers now are limited to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are doubtful about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.

    1. (1) What do we know about 3D printing and food?
A . The 3D printing industry is beginning to focus on food. B . With further development, it's possible to use the 3D printing technology to print food. C . People have made possible 3D food printers. D . The 3D printing and food have developed into a perfect industry.
    2. (2) What benefit does 3D printing bring to food production?
A . It helps cooks to create new dishes. B . It saves time and effort in cooking. C . It improves the cooking conditions. D . It contributes to restaurant decorations.
    3. (3) According to Paragraph 3, 3D-printed food             .
A . is more available to consumers B . can meet personal nutritional needs C . is more tasty than food in supermarkets D . can keep all the nutrition in food
    4. (4) What is the main challenge that prevents 3D food printing from spreading widely?
A . The printing process is complicated. B . 3D food printers are too expensive. C . Food materials have to be dry. D . Some experts doubt 3D food printing.

People often ask me for advice on how to learn English. Everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once learned English in Beijing University, but I mostly learned English on my own.

One thing I can tell is that, once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. When you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "how would I say them in English?" At first, it will be with simple words or word groups, but later you should think about bigger phrases and word groups. Now I'm in America, and for most time, I just think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.

For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of trying to speak English with others because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I tried to hang out with friends who speak no Chinese, so I have no choice but to speak English. I wasn't afraid to make mistakes and I don't mind others laughing at me. My English started improving more quickly after that.

It may be a good idea to ask any of your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some advice.

    1. (1) Where does the writer probably come from?
      A . England. B . America. C . China. D . Canada.
    2. (2) The writer learned English mostly_________.
A . in Beijing University B . by himself C . with the help of his American friends D . in America
    3. (3) Now, when others laugh at the writer's mistakes, what will he do?
A . Keep away from them. B . Ask them the reason. C . Argue with them. D . Let it go.
    4. (4) Which of the following can't help you improve your English according to the passage?
A . Minding making mistakes. B . Trying to speak English with others. C . Thinking in English as much as you can. D . Asking your American friends for some advice.

Recently, one of my friends have sent me a short message, say that true friends are one soul in two bodies, which moves me very much and makes me think how true friendship is.

Nowadays, the word friendship has been used very often that it has lost its meaning. Some jokingly put it that friends are made to be taken advantage. In my opinion, true friendship doesn't mean that you need your friends help, you'll treat them to dinner. True friendship is the communication of the hearts and understand of the souls. True friends keep you in the mind, no matter where they are. Once you have found such true friends, do treasure him. With friendship, life proves happily and harmonious.
