GIY stands for "grow-it-yourself" and is about a new fashion for growing your own food.
There are a lot of reasons why growing your own food is a good idea. GIY helps reduce (减少) carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Food in supermarkets travels a long way and that produces (产生) a lot of CO. If you grow as many vegetables as you can at home, you can help save the earth.
Vegetables you grow are also good for your health because they have more nutrients (营养) than supermarket vegetables and they don't have chemicals (化学品) ) .
How much money can you save? First of all, seeds (种子) are a lot cheaper than vegetables. And secondly, you can save more by planting the most expensive and the most productive (多产的) vegetables. You can give your vegetables to friends and neighbours. It can make you very popular.
Don't worry if you don't have much space. To GIY, you don't even need a garden. You can use pots on your balconies. And don't worry if your space doesn't get much sun. You can plant vegetables that don't need a lot of sun to grow.
Grow your own vegetables now. You will ave both a healthier body and a healthier social life.
People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very low temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30F.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. Two men, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on April6, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极圈) on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very low temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

Britons are well known for drinking tea. The average (典型的) person in the UK drinks around 1. 9kg of tea every year. That's around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all levels of society. But tea does not grow in Britain. Most tea grows in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea could be bought from the market. However, it was only for the rich people.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount (数量) of tea arriving in Britain increased rapidly.
Black tea arrived at this time. At first this tea was served exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British colour.
In the 1800s tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have "afternoon tea". They drank tea with a snack around 4 p.m. to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and diner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent years.

On a snowy Saturday last year, DaltonAnderson was having a great time. He was skiing with his friends Payton Weberand Wyatt Baird. Suddenly, the snow around them began to slide (滑落) . It was anavalanche (雪崩) !
"A lot of snow came down, "Dalton,13, said later. The snow crashed into Dalton and pushed him around. Payton'sbody was almost under the snow. He could breathe but couldn't move. Wyatt'shead was below two feet of the snow and one of his feet was above the snow.
Only Dalton was above the snow. Helearned about avalanches from a TV show, so he knew that there was no time togo for help. Wyatt could die in minutes.
Byusing his hands, Dalton made Payton free first. Payton had a cellphone. Hecalled 911, and the two boys made Wyatt out.
The boys were smart and lucky. Manypeople who were in avalanches died. Avalanches happen on mountainsides. Inabout five seconds, an avalanche can reach nearly 100 miles per hour. Nobodycan run or ski that fast. It's almost impossible to get out of the way.
An avalanche collects snow as ittravels. A large one can grow to 10, 000 tons of snow. So much snow will makeeverything, including trees, houses and of course, people fall in its path asit races downhill.
