“Thanks for our government. Thanks for providing us with such a good training program. The training program will help us live well. I will study hard and learn different skills. After that I can 1my family difficulties and do good to others.” a learner on the job training program said, feeling2.
The learner's father is disabled, and his mother is 3in bed. The family is very poor. So he has to find a job to make money. The learner graduated from high school and didn't have the4to go to the college. The job training program can help him to learn the skills that he'll need in the work place.
The story makes me think of another5. It goes like this: Long long ago, there was a man who liked fishing a lot, and he was6to catch a lot of fish every day. He was a kind-hearted man, he always 7 his fish with his neighbors because they didn't know how to fish. One day, he thought that it would be great if he taught them how to fish. So he called them together to show them how to fish. Everyone was happy as they could 8the fish they caught by themselves.
Now, there are still many poor people in the world. But it's not good if we give only 9to them. Instead, we should give them a chance to learn new skills. Therefore, technical training is very important to people in need and they will learn the skills to 10money. People can learn lots of useful things in the training program and what they learn can help them find jobs.

Paul | I have ever been a volunteer as a French teacher for three months and it was a great experience to teach French. I really enjoyed it and I also improved my French. |
Helen | During my college days, I joined a group called ROS(Reaching Out Society). We provided children and older people with food. Helping other people makes me feel great. And now, I often give food to the homeless people in the street. |
Mike | I'm a volunteer at an animal shelter that's just for cats. I feed the cats and play with them. It's very fun. I was also a volunteer at a hospital for more than 2 years. I answered phone calls, looked after patients and helped nurses. I did some cleaning, too. |
Marian | I did volunteer work to graduate(毕业) from high school. It was a requirement(必要条件). I was a volunteer at a school for disabled kids. I played basketball and other sports with them and served food and drinks. It was actually pretty cool. If I weren't so busy now, I'd do it again. |
Life in the future will be different from life today. Between then and now many changes will take place, but what will the changes be?
The population is growing fast. There will be many people in the world and they spend most of time doing sports, watching TV, traveling and surfing the Internet. Traveling will be much cheaper and easier. And more and more people will go to other countries for holidays.
There will be changes in our food, too. More land will be used for(将被用来)building new towns and houses for all people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. Maybe no one will eat it every day. Instead, they will eat more fruit and vegetables. Maybe people will be healthier.
Work in the future will be different, too. Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots. Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. That will be a new problem.
What do you think Americans in the early twentieth century (1900~1927) did on weekends? What do they do on weekends now?
Then Once upon a time, people spent lots of time at home on weekends. Then, new inventions changed the weekends. ◆People used electric(电动的) streetcars to travel in cities. On weekends, they rode the streetcars to parks. Young people liked roller coasters(过山车). ◆The first movie lasted only one minute. Soon movies lasted longer. In the 1920s, movie theaters sold millions of tickets each week. In 1927, movies eventually(最终) had sound. Sometimes, people stayed at home instead, and listened to another new invention — radio. ◆People in cities worked indoors during the week, so they wanted to be outdoors on weekends. Bicycling became a popular activity. |
Now With more time, money and inventions, people have much more choices. ◆They can visit large parks like Disney World and ride modern roller coasters that go higher and faster than ever before. ◆They can choose from lots of different movies at a multiplex (a building with many movie theaters) or watch a video at home. ◆Many people jog(慢跑), cycle, work out at the gym, or play sports. Others turn on their TV and watch sports. |
Singapore's public transport system (公共交通系统) is one of the best in the world, so you should have no problem finding your way around like a local (当地人). There are three main forms of public transport that you would find in any other major city—trains, buses and taxis.
TRAINS
Trains run from 6 a.m. to midnight. Single trip tickets start at 80 cents. If you buy an EZ-Link card for $15, you can ride the trains and buses all you like.
If you need more information, just call Transit Link on 1800 767 4333.
BUSES
There are several bus services in Singapore and fares (车费) start at 80 cents. Be sure to always ask the driver the cost of your ticket as he can not give changes.
If you need help, just call Transit Link on 1800 767 4333.
TAXIS
There are three main taxi companies—City Cab (6552 2222), Comfort (6552 1111) and Tibs (6552 8888). Booking (预订) can also be made easily by calling the numbers listed above.
RENTAL (租) CARS
Driving in Singapore is a pleasure and if you like to travel at your own pace, renting a car is a good choice. Renting takes away thehassleof getting to places around Singapore. Just sit back and enjoy the city. It also means you'll get to see a lot more that a train or a bus won't let you see.
For car rental, call Avis on +65 6737 1668.
The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.
◆Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say "Hello, Carlos."
◆Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts — 109/244/153 — it becomes easier.
◆Write out what you need to remember often. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing facts.
◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it's a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can talk about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.
All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
