When your pet has an emergency, first aid is not a substitute for veterinary treatment. However, before you are able to get your pet to a veterinarian, knowing some basic first aid can help.

    Bite Wounds

Approach the pet carefully to avoid getting bitten. Wear a mask for the animal and then check the wound. Clean the wound with large amounts of saline (盐水). If these are not available, then regular water may be used. Wrap large open wounds to keep them clean.

    Bleeding

Apply firm, direct pressure over the bleeding area until the bleeding stops. Hold the pressure for at least 10 minutes. Avoid bandages that cut off circulation.

    _________

Check to see if the animal is choking on a foreign object. If an animal is not breathing, place it on a firm surface with its left side up. Check for a heartbeat. If you hear a heartbeat but not breathing, close the animal's mouth and breathe directly into its nose—not the mouth—until the chest expands. Repeat 12 to 15 times per minute.

    Burns

Wash the burn immediately with large amounts of cool, running water. Apply an ice pack for 15-20 minutes. Do not place an ice pack directly on the skin. Wrap the pack in a light towel or other cover. If the animal has large quantities of dry chemicals on its skin, brush them off. Water may activate some dry chemicals.

    Fractures (骨折)

Symptoms include pain, inability to use a limb (腿). Wear a mask for the pet and look for bleeding. If you can control bleeding without causing more injury, then do so. Watch for signs of shock. Don't try to set the fractures by pulling the limb. Transport the pet to the veterinarian immediately, supporting the injured part as best as you can.

About 20 years ago, I took a job in a small hospital's emergency department. No one wanted to work on New Year's Eve, so the shift (轮班)went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.

At 9 p. m. , the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend New Year with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.

The following year I got New Year's Eve duty again. At 9 p. m. sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr Lee and said, “You probably don't remember me, but last New Year's Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me. ” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.

The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr and Mrs Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 p. m. , the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr Lee, his family and I spent 13 New Year's Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each New Year's Eve.

The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. I carefully opened the package and found a crystal (水晶)bell inside. It was engraved (镌刻)with a single word: Friendship. Now, my family, friends and I ring that bell every New Year's Eve at exactly 9 p. m. and offer our best wishes to the man who we won't forget.

    1. (1) Why was working on New Year's Eve considered "a thankless job"?
A . Most patients were seriously ill. B . Patients refused to express thanks. C . Doctors had nothing to do on that day. D . Doctors couldn't get praise for the hard job.
    2. (2) How was Mr. Lee when the author left the hospital the next morning?
A . He was really angry with her. B . He was still in a state of danger. C . He got ready to leave the hospital. D . He recovered from his heart attack.
    3. (3) According to the passage, the author formed a habit of _________.
A . celebrating New Year's Eve with her family B . giving New Year gifts to the hospital staff C . spending New Year's Eve with Mr Lee in the hospital D . ringing the bell for patients in the emergency department
    4. (4) Why does the author ring the bell on New Year's Eve?
A . To honor her working experience. B . To tell kids the traditional custom. C . To show the beginning of the holiday. D . To remember an old friend of hers.

Spotify can tell if you're sad. Here's why that should scare you. Want to figure out if someone is a patient with a mental disability? Ask them what their favorite song is. A New York University study last year found that people who loved Eminem's Lose Yourself and Justin Bieber's What Do You Mean?were more likely to have trouble with mental disabilities than people who were into Dire Straits.

Over the past few years, Spotify has been improving the ability to analyze information to help businessmen target consumers with advertisements made specially for their needs. They conclude this from the sort of music you're listening to, combined with where and when you're listening to it, along with third-party data that might be available.

Now, to be clear, there's nothing significantly illegal about what Spotify is doing with your information. I certainly don't think that they are working with shadow consulting firms to serve you ads selling a culture struggle while you're listening to music that suggests you might be in a terrible situation. However, I find it disappointing that our personal, private moments with music are increasingly being turned into information points and offered to advertisers.

You can see where this could go, can't you?As ad targeting gets even more accurate, businessmen will have the ability to target our feelings in potentially improper ways. According to one study, you are more likely to spend more on a product if you're feeling sad. You can imagine some companies might take advantage of that. And on that note, I'm feeling a little down about all this. Head off to treat myself to something expensive.

    1. (1) What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A . To introduce a new song. B . To draw readers' attention. C . To help more patients. D . To promote a new medium.
    2. (2) Spotify improves its ability to analyze information to    .
A . provide services for the government B . work with shadowy consulting firms C . get listeners' personal information D . help businessmen attract consumers
    3. (3) What's the author's attitude towards Spotify?
      A . Uncertain. B . Supportive. C . Positive. D . Dissatisfied.
    4. (4) Who is the text probably designed for?
      A . Internet users. B . Officials. C . Researchers. D . Managers.
