        Rachel Carson was born in the USA on May 27, 1907. Her mother, Maria Carson, had been a schoolteacher. She loved books. She also loved nature. She showed Rachel the beauty of nature. She also taught Rachel a deep love for books. As a quiet child, Rachel liked to read and. Write stories. At a very early age, she decided she wanted to be a writer some day. Her story first appeared in a children's magazine when she was ten years old.

        Her first book, Under the Sea Wind came out in 1941. In 1948, Miss Carson began working on another book, The Sea Around Us. She always researched carefully when she wrote. She collected information from more than one thou- sand places to write The Sea Around Us. When the book came out in 1951, it won the National Book Award. It was No.1 on the best-seller list for more than a year. The Sea Around Us made Rachel Carson famous.

        Rachel Carson s most famous book, Silent Spring came out in 1962. In this book, she pointed out that the use of some kinds of pesticides(杀虫剂) like DDT would cause  the number of birds to decline because it would kill them as well. Finally, in November 1969, the United States government decided that the use of DDT must stop in two years.

        Rachel Carson has been regarded as a great environ- mentalist(环保主义者) and writer. She will be remembered by the world.

        Apple's logo is one of the most familiar icons(图标) around the world. But what's the story about the Apple logo? The image of the apple is obvious, because that's the name of the company. What about the bite?

        The famous story is that the logo shows respect and honour for Alan Turing. He was the father of computer science. He researched artificial intelligence(人工智能)

    and unlocked German wartime codes (密码). However, after the war, he was put into prison, because of his beliefs. He could not stand the looking down and chose to bite a poisoned apple to end his life in the prison.

        However, Rob Jan off, who designed the famous Apple logo, said, "It's not the truth, but only a legend. The real reason why I designed it with a bite is very simple. I wanted people to get that it was an apple not a cherry. When I go to markets to buy apples, I always mistake apples for cherries. It really has nothing to do with the scientist. "

        Are you kidding? An apple is much bigger than a cherry. It's very easy to tell. But if you use an apple to design a logo, some people may mistake it for a cherry.

        Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 and grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. . Science and maths were his two favourite subjects at school. And he dreamed of being a scientist.

         At that time, a computer was a very large machine. Once he was interested in a very old computer. He and some of his friends spent as much time as possible on computers. In the end, they worked out a software programme.

        In 1973, Bill went to Harvard University. In 1975, Bill and his partners developed a software programme called BASIC. This was not the first programme ever created, but its inventors were the first to decide, that people who wanted to use it should pay for it. . Then Bill left Harvard to work for Microsoft, a company he started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. They thought the computer would come into every office and every home soon. .They improved the software to make it easier for people to use computers. His achievements benefited people a lot.

        Henri was born in Manitoba, Canada. He joined the Canadian Army on February 11, 1943 during the Second World War. At first, he was only told for "home service(国内服役)" unless he would like to go abroad. But Henri was a brave young man and he had a will to go abroad. Finally, he was against his family's wishes and went abroad.

        As part of his "home service", Henri was sent. To Kiska, Alaska to fight the Japanese. Once he returned from Kiska, he could ask for "abroad service". In the end, he got his wish in the spring of 1944 when he was sent to Europe. He went to the front in France on August 8, 1944.

        In Manitoba, Henri's father was proud of his son, but\ his mother was worried about him. To their joy, the Germans were running away. Some reports said that the war would be over before winter. But the Germans were not yet defeated (战败). Henri became one of many unlucky soldiers who were killed during this war. On August 28, 1944, just twenty days after he arrived in France, Henri was killed near Rouen, France.

        Henri's family has missed him over the years. To this day, people still find many ways to remember Henri because he gave his life to his country. People usually visit an island named after the national hero by the local Manitoba Government , so Henri will live on as a lesson for people in spite of(尽管) the peace age now.
