A Texas mom named Samantha Whiting is going out of her way to thank a stranger. Although she only knew his first name and where he lived, Whiting was determined to track him down.
The incident occurred in August 2020, when Whiting and her 10-year-old daughter, Hayley, were at the beach in Monterey, California. Sarmantha went into the water to try to save her daughter, but was struggling. Bystander Kevinh Cozzi heard their screams, and raced into the waves to help. He was able to get Hayley to safety, with some assistance from a lifeguard. "He saved us," Samantha told ABC News. "If it wasn't for him risking his life in such a selfless act, I would have lost not only my own life but my baby girl."
The Whitings only learned Kevin's first name and that, he lived in Merced, California. They were visiting Monterey, and when they returned to their home in Texas, the family decided to find Cozzi to let him know they are deeply indebted to him who saved Hayley this summer when she was caught in a rapids. "He's one of the biggest heroes I've ever met," Hayley said. Last week, Samantha made a post on the Facebook group Merced Neighborhood Watch, and within hours, she was talking to Cozzi.
Cozzi and his fiancee(未婚妻) had to delay their wedding because of the coronavirus disease, and the Whitings decided to launch a GoFundMe to help them have the wedding of their dreams. So far, the page has raised close to $2,000-but Cozzi told ABC News he's happier to know Hayley is safe than receiving a reward. He is thankful for their fundraiser, but told ABC News, "That girl being saved was enough for me, honestly."
Now, both Samantha and Hayley have been invited to the wedding, set for next fall, and look forward to once again thanking Cozzi in person during the wedding.
The first Earth Day took place on April 22,1970. Twenty million Americans, about 10% of the US's population then, demonstrated(示威) against the widespread attitude at the time of ignoring environmental issues. Now, 50 years later, Earth Day remains an important event to draw attention to necessary actions to protect the planet. Unfortunately, threats to the environment also continue, including at least one that certainly wasn't as apparent in 1970.
The first Earth Day, notes EDN (Earth Day Network, the global organizer of Earth Day), caused a wave of action, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States such as the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many countries soon adopted similar laws, it adds.
Today, EDN works with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries. The theme of 2020 Earth Day is climate action. Thanks to groups like EDN, public awareness and demands for better environmental management have grown dramatically and prompted great progress is many areas.
One problem that hadn't surfaced much in 1970- the harm of unwanted plastics -has become a major environmental issue. It is drawing increasing attention and is stimulating efforts both to find productive uses for the waste materials and to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Among the recent coronavirus global pandemic (流行病), EDN marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with the first Digital Earth Day, a global digital mobilization (动员) on April 22 to address the most urgent threats to people and the planet.
"At Earth Day Network, health and safety of volunteers and participants in Earth Day events are our top concern. Among the recent outbreak, we encourage people to rise up but to do so safely and responsibly-in many cases, that means using our voices to drive action online rather than in person," said Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network.
Someone once said,' the poorest man on earth is not the man without money, but the men without a dream.' This implies that the totality of a man's life is rooted in dreams.
I have never seen a successful man without a dream; in fact, for plans to cone to being it must first be imagined as a dream. Bringing one's dream to realization is one of the most powerful things anyone can do to be successful in life. However, we need to understand that to life there are designs and rules that cannot be broken or replaced; for instance, food has no substitute in our lives. Why? It is because we need food for energy to do work and growth.
Also, having dream is vital in making the most of our adventure in life. Have you ever wondered why each time success is discussed some names such as Bill Gate, Martin Luther King, Thomas Edison, Barrack Obana and others come to our minds?
We need to understand that all these men at one point in their lives had dreams, which they put into plans Greatness is never achieved in a day; it first starts in the mind like a dream, before the carrier puts it into plans. Dream is the starting point of success, it is the beginning of any creation. Life without a dream is doomed io failure. Where there is no dream, there is no hope. Without a, dream, one's future is uncertain.
When then is dream? It can be described as the mental picture of a desired future. I believe there are two worlds; the physical world we can see and relate with, and the world that exists in the mind (imagined world). Concrete items existed first in imagined world before birthed in form of invention or otherwise. Everything that exists today, was created twice. First in the mind and then processed into real or seen world.
Dream is, therefore, the currency and power of hope. Our dreams are much more important than our present circumstances, because they enable us to have ideas about the future.
How to Reduce Food Waste
Food waste is a huge problem in many countries. . Here are four simple ways to start reducing your food waste at home today.
Make a plane. Before you shop for groceries, think about exactly what you need for the week, make a list and then stick to it. . -we throw things in the shopping cart that sound good or look novel, and then we let them sit in the back of the fridge for a few weeks. When food does go bad, take stock. What are you already buying too much of? What are you always throwing away? Then you can use that information to be a more conscious shopper during your next trip to the grocery store.
. Once you know what you'll still need to buy, write the items down with exact numbers, like "enough for three lunches." It's also helpful to think about whether you'll be eating out during the coming week and, if so, how many times. So be realistic about your schedule for the week as you're doing your planning, and cut down accordingly on the amount you buy.
Your fridge is your friend. If you realize that you won't be able to use food before it's too late, turn to the trusty fridge. . Besides, Freezing food helps lock in its flavor and nutrients, so the next time you find those perfect strawberries for your summer picnic, don't throw the leftovers. Bag it, date it and put in the fridge before it's too late.
Try Ye compost(堆肥)food. No matter how careful you are, you'll always hive a few vegetable wastes, apple cores and eggshells. Even organic matter breaks down very slowly. The result is a whole lot of methane, which warms the earth even more than carbon dioxide. A great way to reduce food waste impact is lo compost items instead of throwing them in the trash. .
A. Limit the quantities.
B. Cut down the food intake.
C. But many of us are "emotional consumers".
D. The good news: Each of us, can help solve it.
E. People are starving for being short of enough food.
F. Think of this as an approach of recycling your food waste.
G. No one would throw away anything that had a two hundred dollar value to it.
