One night, a little swallow flew over the city. He was very1and wanted to have a good sleep in the city. When he saw the Statue of the Happy Prince(王子), he flew down and got ready to sleep2the feet of the Happy Prince.
Just as he was putting his head under his wing, some3fell on him. He thought it was raining. But when he looked4, he found the sky was5clear and bright that he could see lots of stars. Suddenly, he saw some tears were running down the Prince's golden6.
"7are you crying?" asked the swallow. "In a little street, there's a poor house. From one of the windows, I see a woman8at a table. She's sewing clothes for9women to wear. In a bed in the corner of the room, her little boy is sick. He's asking for oranges, but his mother has only water to give him so he is crying. The boy is so thirsty10the mother is so sad. Little swallow, will you please take her the11from the top of my sword(剑)?"
"It is very cold here and I am leaving for a warm place, but I will stay with you and do as you ask. The swallow took the bright red jewel from the Prince's sword and flew away with it in his mouth. He flew into the woman's room and12it beside the woman's needle.
13he flew back, he told the Prince what he had done. "It's strange," he added. "It's so cold but I feel quite14now."
"That's15you have done a good thing," said the Prince. The little swallow began to think about this, and then he fell asleep.
On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart (an American pilot) and Fred Noonan left New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific. This was the longest and most dangerous part of their t around the world. Earhart had trouble soon after the plane took off. The weather was very bad, so she had to f at 3, 000 metres. Going this high, the plane used fuel quickly.
After about 20 h , Earhart and Noonan got close to Howland Island. The island was o about 65 miles away, but the bright sun was shining in their faces so they couldn't see it. Near Howland, a ship was w for the plane. Earhart contacted the ship. "We don't have enough fuel, "she said. The ship tried to stay in touch with her b got no answer. Finally, the ship called for help. People looked for Earhart and Noonan for days. However, they found nothing.
What happened to Amelia Earhart? No one knows for sure. D the flight, she probably moved in the wrong. direction (方向) because the sun was bright and it was d to see. So she got lost; soon after, her plane ran out of fuel, and she died at sea. Another idea is that she survived(幸存) the plane crash(飞机失事),s to a lonely island, and later died there. Still, others think she survived the crash and secretly returned to the US with a new identity(身份).
Till now, none of these i has been proved. People are still, wondering about them. (Noonan's body has never been found either.) No matter what happened, Earhart probably died as she wished. "When I go," she said, "I'd like best to go in my plane."
