For a fulltime worker and a mother of three, it seems impossible to spend time 1, but Hope Cooper can make it.
Cooper volunteers at Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) in Varina High School. Her work is to 2 applications(申请表格)to students with scholarships (奖学金) for college. Cooper says, "I usually run to the PTSA meetings right after work. After the meetings, I have to run home and cook dinner for my own children."
3 of Cooper's children goes to Varina High School, but she says, "Volunteering isn't all about helping the people you know best, but it's about helping those who 4 you most." Cooper chooses to volunteer in Varina High School because she 5 some poor students can't afford the higher education. She says 6 she can't help out every student, helping out one student is rewarding (值得的). Cooper thinks volunteering not only makes a difference to the students but also 7 her thought of what is important in life. Cooper says volunteering may seem 8 to one but means so much to those who need it. She 9 everyone to take part in it. She plans to keep on volunteering in the future. "Volunteering gives me a 10 that I need. I'll ask my children to volunteer, too," she says.

Every year thousands of young people in England finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers (志愿者). Volunteers give their time to help people. For example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they do something helpful for the environment.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now she's living in Belize. Pauline says, “I'm working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted (污染), the coral dies. I'm helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it's too late.”
“I'm staying with a family here and I help do some housework. I don't get any money, but that's OK. I love my work here, and I'm learning a lot about the people of Belize—and myself!
When I finish my work, I want to stay here for another three months. I want to travel around
Belize and Central America.”
Dear Deborah,
Thanks to you, we are able to have a comfortable place for our children to live and learn this year. Last Monday, Michael and his sister, Janet, celebrated Michael's 9th birthday with cakes and cards here. Thank you for your kind gift of $1,000 to Children's Residential Services of Greater Boston. For the homeless children like Michael and Janet in our center, your kindness makes a difference to them.
The children can't wait to use the computers to do their homework and chat with their friends! The computers are part of our excellence (优点) in Service Campaign.
We would like you to visit our "home", so you can meet the children. We love to show you around our "home". The children also enjoy meeting visitors.
Janet Teebs, our development director (负责人), is always available to welcome you, or to answer any questions you may have.
You are part of their lives.
Sincerely,
Malcolm Wexter

Does helping others make you happy? Yes. All of us could (are) volunteers and help people in need.
Judy, an American girl, had a heart problem. She was sad. Her classmates tried (cheer) her up. Judy was so sick that she needed (have) an operation (手术). But her family was poor. Her parents hoped (get) help from the public (公众). A TV station soon set up a call-in center for Judy. Many people (call) up Judy and helped her out. At the same time, Judy's classmates handed out flyers (传单) (tell) others about Judy's story. Judy and her parents were really moved (感动的).
We can (do) lots of volunteer work. We can volunteer in hospitals, old people's homes and so on. We can also (help) homeless people or volunteer (clean) up parks. Volunteering is not only a great way to help people, but also a great way (make) new friends and have fun.
