I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard a young voice. "Mom, come here! There's a lady here my size!" The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to apologize. I smiled and told her, "It's okay. " Then I talked to the boy, "Hi, I'm Darry Kramer. How are you?" He studied me from head to toe, and asked, "Are you a little mommy?" "Yes, I have a son, " I answered. "Why are you so little?" he asked. "It's the way I was born, " I said. "Some people are little. Some are tall. I'm just not going to grow any bigger. " After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy's hand and left.
My life as a little person is filled with stories like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents.
It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness. I stand three feet nine inches tall. I was born an achondroplasia dwarf(侏儒). Despite this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.
I didn't realize how short I was until I started school. Some kids joked on me, calling me names. Then I knew. I began to hate the first day of school each year. New students would always stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs.
But I learned to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life. I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I made up for in personality.
I'm 47 now, and the stares have not diminished as I've grown older. People are amazed when they see me driving. I try to keep positive. When people are impolite, I remind myself, "Look what else I have—a great family, nice friends. "
It's the children's questions that make my life special. I enjoy answering their questions. My hope is that I will encourage them to accept their peers, whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them with respect.
Swimming and English Learning
Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.
It's cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.
According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill(跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate(调节)its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further obstacle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, lung cancer, stroke and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. Exercise in air pollution increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust(尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.
How to help yourself relax before bed
Having trouble sleeping lately? There are a great number of things that can keep a person up at night. Some causes of sleeplessness are beyond our control. .
Mindful meditation (冥想)
You may not be able to force your mind to quiet down, but a moment of mental silence just might sneak (潜入) up on you. . Then it is much easier to pursue that feeling and cause it to take place.
It's silly to expect your mind to stop worrying. You can write about all the things that are worrying you and how you will deal with them. By putting those solutions on paper, and trying to carry out them, you can reduce the number of troublesome things in your mind.
Create a pre-sleep routine
It's hard to change from worrying to relaxing if you jump into bed as soon as you finish answering work emails. . For example, you can have a warm shower, followed by going to bed with a glass of warm milk while listening to some soft music. The best part of this is that such things tend to become more powerful over time.
Stay healthy
There are some vitamin (维生素) and hormone imbalances that can mess up your energy levels. . Such imbalances can be eased by the use of moderate vitamin supplements and keeping fit through taking natural remedies, such as exercise, healthy diet, good relationships, and so on.
A. Put down your worries
B. Go to bed as early as you can
C. This disorder makes it harder for you to go to sleep
D. So it is helpful to make some adjustments before bed
E. There is a time and place for worrying, but bedtime is neither
F. However, there's always something we can do to get better sleep
G. Once you know what a quiet mind feels like, you'll like the feeling
One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. "Sweetie, my company wants to1me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling you that you've done 2 and allowing you to skip a grade(跳级), but you'll have to
3your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?" She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me4for the rest of the night. I had said "yes" but for the first time, I realized the5decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I'd 6wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never replace her 7 and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large8apartment, I became 9how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then 10I started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on11family and work. 12difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn't know whether you made the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a 13 attitude.
Back home, I 14myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she15to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be 16. I learnt how to take care of myself and set high but achievable17.
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the 18 has really taught me. Sacrifices 19 in the end. The separation between us has proved to be a 20 for me.
Rise After Falling
A father was worried about his son, was sixteen years old but had no courage at all. So the father decided to call on a Buddhist monk(僧侣) (train) his boy.
The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father, "I insist that your son should be left alone here. I'll make him into a real man within three months. , you can't come to see him during this period."
Three months later, the boy's father (return). The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and an (experience) boxer. Each time the fighter struck the boy, he (fall) down, but at once the boy stood up; and each time a heavy blow knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, " do you think of your child?"
"What a shame!" the boy's father said, "I never thought he would be so (easy) knocked down. I needn't have him stay here any(long)!
"I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of (cry)? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have."

Hi, Janice,
It's been a month since I came to this new school and I really want share with you some of the problems I have been experiencing.
As I tell you last time, I made three new friend here. We hang out together during lunch and after school. We've been spending a lot of time sing in karaoke bars. It's been three Saturdays now and it really costs me many. And I started to see this as a time-wasting activity! In fact, I don't like to go anymore, so I'm afraid I'll lose their friendship. How do you think I should do? If you are me, would you talk to him?
Please help with me and give me some advice.
