If you're a gamer who's glued to (粘在) your phone constantly, it could be time to ask for medical help. On June 18, the WHO officially listed "gaming disorder" as a mental illness, like drug or gambling(骕博)addiction.

"Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view, " Mark Griffiths, a professor from Nottingham Trent University in the UK, told the Associated Press. "Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score, while gamers use points. "

The first time I saw Carlos I would never have believed he was going to change my life. I had my arms full of books and I was rushing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was Carlos.

    "My…. you're tall, "he said.

Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word.

I glanced back to see if Reed was laughing with the rest. That would be the last straw. But Reed was studying chemistry and did not seem to be aware of anything else. I didn't know why I considered Reed my friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than 1. Anyway, every time I blew out my birthday candles and made a wish, it was for a date with Reed.

"Take that seat." Mr. McCarthy told the proud neweomer Carlos, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the roo m.

Carlos smiled broadly. "But I need a couple of dictionaries." Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had the m on his side.

It was the school elections that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president and Carlos vice president. "How come?" I kept asking myself. "How come this shrimp (F) who's only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular?"

So on that morning, I stopped Carlos and said, "It doesn't seem to bother you- being short."

He looked up at me. "Of course I mind being short. But there isn't anything I can do about it. When I realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I was determined to make the best of it and focus on being myself. "

"You seem to get along great, "I acknowledged. "But what about me? Nobody wants to date a girl taller than he is. ""The trouble with you is you're afraid to be yourself. You're s mart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty. "

    I felt myself turning red.

    1. (1) Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A . The writer cared much about Reed's attitude. B . Carlos isn't popular with the classmates. C . The writer is always confident with herself. D . Carlos always makes fun of the writer.
    2. (2) From the passage, we can conclude                .
A . Carlos is as tall as the writer B . Carlos fell in love with the writer later C . the writer is very tall D . Reed, Carlos and the writer became good friends later
    3. (3) What can we use to describe Carlos' character?
A . Handsome and proud B . Humorous and confident C . emotional and helpful D . Hardworking and popular
    4. (4) What's the best title of the passage?

Research has shown that two-thirds of human conversation is taken up not with discussion of the cultural or political problems of the day, not heated debates about films we've just watched or books we've just finished reading, but plain and simple gossip(说闲话).

Language is our greatest treasure as a species, and what do we frequently do with it? We gossip. About others' behavior and private lives, such as who's doing what with whom, who's in and who's out and why; how to deal with difficult social situations involving children, lovers, and colleagues.

The reasons for people's preference for gossiping has become a heated topic recently. According to Professor Robin Dunbar, gossip is one of vital issues for human beings. He suggests that we don't spend two-thirds of our time gossiping just because we can talk, on the contrary, language evolved ( 进(化) specifically to allow us to gossip.

Dunbar arrived at his theory by studying the behavior of monkeys. By means of brushing the fur for each other, monkeys form groups with other individuals from whom they can get support when they encounter some kind of conflict within the group or attack from outside it.

As we human beings evolve from a particular branch of the animal family, Dunbar concludes that at one time in our history we did much the same. Grouping together made sense because the bigger the group, the greater the protection it provided; on the other hand, the bigger the group, the greater the stresses of living close to others. Brushing the fur helped to ease the pressure and calm everybody down.

But as the groups got bigger and bigger, the a mount of time spent in brushing activities also had to be extended to maintain its effectiveness. Clearly, a more efficient method was needed, and thus language evolved as a kind of verbal way which allowed humans to develop relationship with ever-larger groups by exchanging in for mation over a wider network of individuals than would be possible by one-to-one physical contact.

    1. (1) What do we do with language in most of the time?
A . We discuss about present cultural or political problems. B . We comment on the films we've just watched. C . We have a heated debated with friends. D . We talk about other people's personal behaviors.
    2. (2) Why do humans like to gossip according to Dunbar?
A . Because they want to kill time. B . Because they want to know more about others' private lives. C . Because they are talkative. D . Because they want to maintain relationship with groups.
    3. (3) How did Dunbar come up with his theory about language?
A . By studying the history of language. B . By studying the behaviors of monkey. C . By interviewing. D . By studying the history of groups.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by carly evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a s mall house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped, and it began to snow. Seve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil(铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected of the foil and into the tent. Son images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed(倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
