How did artists learn English? Here are two examples.
Zhang Ziyi, a well-known Chinese actress, had a small part in the 2001 American film Rush Hour 2 with Jackie Chan. The role was1for her because she couldn't speak English. Chan had to translate(翻译)2from Chinese to English for her.
3Rush Hour 2, Zhang began to study English in New York City. She also watched television and listened to music in English. She liked watching TV commercials(广告)4the actress spoke slowly and clearly.
Zhang's biggest5came when she played the starring role(主角)in the film Memoirs of a Geisha. A friend told Zhang, "It will be hard for you to express your feelings in English." But she6the part and studied harder. As a result, her role in the film was7.
Shakira is a Colombian singer and songwriter. She used to sing and write in Spanish. Many people wanted to translate her songs from Spanish to English. Shakira8, but she felt worried about losing control of her music. So she decided to write her own9in English.
Shakira studied grammar and common expressions. She also wanted to know10people use English to express their feelings. So she also read newspapers and poetry(诗歌).
Today, Shakira writes and performs her music in both Spanish and English for fans around the world.
People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would I say them in English?" At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I'm in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
Reading is the key to school success and, like any other skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity(自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase(短语). With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as the first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(数量) of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new that is suitable (适合)for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
Many students think it is too difficult to learn English well, though they know it is important.
Firstly, A lot of people can't speak English well because they are afraid of making mistakes. But in order to improve your spoken English, you need to be brave and confident. Don't care too much about the mistakes in your spoken English. Being able to express your ideas is the most important thing.
Secondly, You can watch Hollywood movies like Spider Man and Captain America. Listen to what they say carefully and try to understand the main ideas of the movies.
Lastly, I know that students are tired nowadays and that you always have to do exercises of different subjects. But practice makes perfect. Only by doing a lot of exercises can you get better English skills.
and you just have to find the best way for you.

A different way of teaching is widely used in our English study. Before class, we make study plans first. Then we look up the new words, listen to the recording and read the text. When we meet problems we can't solve by ourselves, we always write them down in our notebooks.
In class, we sit in groups to discuss the problems freely. The teacher always offers help when we need. After discussion, it's time for us to give a report to the class. We also make conversations in pairs and practice a lot. It's really good for our listening and speaking.
After class, we have less homework now so we can go to the library to read English books, magazines and newspapers. We can also surf the Internet for useful information.
In a word, we enjoy the new way of studying. We can make more progress in our study.

When the teacher asks a question in class, Wang Xiaobin never raises his hand and this situation is very common at middle schools. This 15-year-old boy always waits for other classmates or the teacher to give the answer. “What if my answer is wrong?” Wang asks.
Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise their hands when a question is asked. ①“I think it's a problem that may affect (影响) our studies, but I am afraid of making mistakes in front of my classmates,” he said.
When we asked the teacher, Hu Wei, why the students didn't raise their hands, he said, “They lack (缺乏) confidence, they are afraid of showing off, or they're afraid of losing face by giving wrong answers.”
To encourage students to raise their hands in class, Hu suggests that teachers should repeat the question, then try to guide and encourage students to offer their answers. ②Hu also advised students not to be shy, but brave enough to try.
Sun Pin, 16 of Fujian, always raises her hand as soon as she comes up with the answer, even if she isn't sure she has gotten it right. Sun can't understand why some of her classmates keep silent in class. She enjoys raising her hand a lot. “It keeps me enthusiastic(热情的) and confident to express my idea,” Sun said. “Raising my hand has really made me excellent.”

Dear Wang Lin,
Sorry to hear that you have problems in English learning. But don't worry. Everyone has the to learn English well. Here are some to language learning. I hope they may help you.
Listening and repeating is a good way to improve your . Why not buy some English tapes? You can listen to them at home and the sentences again and again until you are comfortable with them.
It's normal to forget some new words sometimes. But I think you can write them down on paper or your notebooks so that you can them in your free time. Another way is to read every morning. Reading is one of the best ways to your vocabulary(词汇).
I know it's really boring to remember rules. But grammar is really useful. Remember to listen to the teacher and take carefully in class. You can them on your own or with your classmates after class. Then practice what you learned by doing exercises. Try to study and remember information bit by bit instead of memorizing a lot once.
Yours,
Gina
