What could a poem writer and a film director share? More than you think! Langston Hughes began writing poems in high school and soon became one of America's greatest writers. Most of his writing is about his experiences as an African American. He wrote poems about people who worked hard through life but still found things to be happy about. He wrote plays and books about justice (正义) for all people, and he wrote kids' books too. The Sweel and Sour Animal Book is a book of his animal poems. Pictures and photos were used in the book. "Hold fast to dreams" is a line in a farmous Hughes poem. That's exactly what he did throughout his life.
When Steven Spielberg was in middle school, he wanted to make a film. He had an idea for a film, but no money. He started a tree planting business and made his film with the money he earned. Spielberg never stopped making films, even after many film schools refused him. Today he is one of the most popular and important filmmakers in the world. His films are about people who are adventurous (有冒险精神的), brave and kind. His characters often fight for what is good. Some of his films are about his Jewish background, such as Schindler 's List. Spielberg once said, "I don't dream that much at night because I dream for a living." In different ways, both Hughes and Spielberg have encouraged people of all ages to reach for their dreams.
Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabularies. see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. The key to success is choosing the right book for yourself.
For beginners, I would recommend staring with something short and simple. Children's books are a great place to start. Dr Seuss's books can make you laugh. Dr Seuss writes his books in rhyme (押韵) and they are all very funny 一 The Cat in the Hal is probably his most well 一 known book, Starting with something like this means you are easier to finish the book and want to read more.
For more advanced learners, you could try The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. The book isn't too long and if you've seen the film, it may be easier to follow.
If you're not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes? This book contains lots of short stories, all written in rhyme. Or. try a very short book 一 like one from Roger Hargreaves's Mr Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabularies.
Hemingway was one of the famous writers. He was born in America in 1899. His father was a doctor and loved sports very much, and his mother taught music. Among six children in the family, Hemingway was the second oldest.
Hemingway had written many books in his life. The Old Man and the Sea is one of the most famous and also my favourite. It came out in 1952. The main character in the book is a fisherman. He is an old man and fishes alone. People think he is a man with bad luck, because he doesn't get a fish in eighty 一 four days. Every evening, he comes home with his empty boat. But the old man believes himself. Then on the eighty fifth day the man catches a big fish. Although he meets a lot of trouble, the old man never gives up.
