Hungry Students Get Healthy Choices
It is a well-known scientific fact that teenagers eat 50 percent more than the average person. Well, actually three meals a day just isn't enough (satisfy) their endless hunger.
Recently Tongji University (decide) to keep its canteens open till 11 p.m. and to serve healthy meals at affordable prices. Fu Qinjun, the director of the university's food services, (quote) as saying, "Students are usually hungry after studying late into the night, but our canteens used to stop service after 7 p.m. That's students turned to outside vendors (小贩) but the quality and safety of the food is not good enough."
This is good news for the students now have healthy late-night choices for their diet instead of relying on fast food and the snacks available at convenience stores. Those foods tend to contain a lot of salt, fat and sugar which set off pleasure receptors (感受器) in our brains but are basically unhealthy when (eat) in excess and can make us fat.
If you're a boarding student, you probably know about fat because you have likely put on a little weight since you started school. In North America, this phenomenon is called the "Freshman Fifteen." refers to the fact that many students gain up to fifteen pounds during the first year they are away from home. Without mum (look) after them, they tend to eat more than they should.
For young people, though, having a healthy appetite is a good thing. Your body keeps growing until about the age of twenty-one, so you need to eat. However, it's important to learn how to eat well. So, kudos (赞誉) to Tongji University for helping students fill their bottomless pits (无底洞) healthy food. And now maybe the university will keep its gym open late at night students can walk off some of those extra calories!

The desire to make explorations(探险)is born with man. Wherever his imagination goes, man also has a wish to go. A large part of human history is connected with the exploration of the world in which we live. Again and again people have set out with surprising and patience to look into regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the unknown. With kites, balloons and aircraft they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now the outer space receives their .
Why should man take the of conquering(征服) space? It is hard to list the specific practical benefits that will result. But one knows, from past experience in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will its way into valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in space, and from the of space and the space flight environment on him, will be very valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find uses in everyday life in some way. Many areas will benefit from them, communication, generation of power, transportation and travel, food production, materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely just what the practical results will be is almost impossible.
A new study, carried out by The American Automobile Association of America (AAA), has found that driver assistance systems fail to perform some actions in real-world test situations.
The experiments aimed to recreate common driving situations to measure the1 of the assistance systems. All of the four test models had systems designed to provide emergency stopping assistance.2 , they were built to help keep vehicles within a lane and to back up speed control systems. AAA said the test vehicles repeatedly3 on public roads when dealing with some real-world situations.
Separate tests were carried out in a4 environment off public roads. In those tests, all vehicles were able to5 stay in a lane and to recognize the presence of another vehicle entering into traffic. However, three out of four vehicles6 a test in which a lead vehicle changed lanes, causing a stopped vehicle to suddenly appear. AAA said in this test, each of the three cases required a driver to be involved to7 an immediate crash.
Automakers usually warn that the ability to8 a stopped vehicle after a lead vehicle changes lanes is a design limitation for driver assistance systems. But AAA's director of automotive engineering, Greg Brannon said vehicles had been expected to notice the stopped cars and react in time. Brannon said one reason for the9 could be that several manufacturers use the word pilot in the names of their systems. "Confusing vocabulary may lead someone to10 a system's capability, unintentionally placing the driver and others on the road at risk." He added.
"Going after the footprints of wild animals, you can see the most beautiful scenery in the world. You can see the other side of the world, full of strength, wildness and tenderness," said Xi Zhinong about being a wildlife photographer.
In 1983, 19-year-old Xi had an opportunity to take part in shooting a film about wild birds. At the time, people didn't know how to photograph these birds without disturbing them. Crews used to catch the birds, tie their legs with ropes and then put them back on tree branches for shooting. Xi thought the birds captured this way had no life. Instead, he set out to learn how to photograph and film birds while they were in flight. The more Xi filmed, the more he saw the cruelty of animals killing. Xi thought he should do more to help protect the wildlife, as focusing on birds was far from enough.
In 1992, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) launched a three-year research project focused on black snub-nosed monkeys, an endangered species in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Xi's hometown. Xi followed the researchers to reach the forests at 4,000 meters above sea level. He became the first to film these striking monkeys in the wild. After years of effort, Xi's documentary film "Mystery Yunnan Snub-Nosed Monkey" won several international awards, including the TVE award at England's Wildscreen Festival in 2002.
Xi not only films endangered species, but has also taken on the mission of raising awareness for the protection of wild animals and their homes by giving lectures in cities throughout the country.
Now, he owns a studio "Wild China Film" and uses his images to preserve nature. "I hope to demonstrate the most vivid and realistic scenery to the public. I wish natural reserves can be found everywhere in China, but the most important thing is that these reserves are impressed upon in the minds of everybody," Xi noted.
If you are coming to Bondi Beach, a suburb of Sydney, try to leave your car at home. Public transport in Sydney is pretty dismal but parking can be even more of a problem at the beach.
Bus Service
All buses from the city start from Circular Quay and the ride to Bondi Beach takes 45 minutes. The bus may be numbered 380 or 333 with the destination showing North Bondi, Dover Heights, Watsons Bay or Bondi Beach. Together this is called "the 380 bus" and all buses go to Bondi Beach.
Other Bus Adventures
Apart from the well-known 380, lots of other bus services wind their way through the back streets. Bus drivers, trying to be helpful, will not suggest any of these routes for fear your trip will take longer or you will become lost. But here are a few worth trying:
The 389 bus runs every 10 minutes all day (20 minutes on Sundays and 30 min after 8pm daily) and goes through the historic back streets of Paddington, following the route of an old trolley car service. You will pass a whole street of coffee shops in East Sydney, past the gates of the DarlinghurstGaol, through streets lined with terrace houses(联排公寓), then on to Bondi Junction. The 389 travels along GlenayrAenue at Bondi Beach which is a long block but a level walk to the beach.
The 400 Bus goes to the University of NSW, The Prince of Wales Hospital, Eastgardens and the Airport. This bus runs every five minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends. Service are less frequent after 7pm and finish around 11pm. For shopperholics, the 400 takes you directly to the Eastgardens Shopping Centre. Every 20 minutes a 400 bus continues on to the Domestic and International airport terminals.
The 380 bus to Watsons Bay terminates at North Bondi, but some 380 buses continue on to Watsons Bay, which is a great excursion for tourists. At Watsons Bay there is famous lookout, great views of the harbour and the ocean, a hotel and several cafes, a 30-minute walk to South Head, other bus routes and even a ferry service back to Circular Quay.
In 1917, when the country declared its independence from Russia, there was a strong desire to explore and clear what it was to be Finnish. Architects and designers became nation-builders, tasked with giving shape to the new homes and public spaces that the country needed, as the economy grew and the once agricultural society began to industrialize. Their ambitious plan was social, optimistic and forward-looking, and democratic design emerged as a significant characteristic of the new country.
Many people found great opportunity and creative stimulus in Finland's transition into an independent modern nation, perhaps none more than the internationally famous architect Alvar Aalto. Over the course of his long career, he championed a revolutionary style of design that combined functionality with natural materials and organic forms. Aalto was a great ambassador(大使)for Finnish design at a time when Finns were thinking of how to present themselves to the rest of the world. When Aalto designed the Paimio Sanatorium in 1932, he applied his practical approach to the building and every piece of furniture within it to international approval. Soon after, he founded Artek, a design company that combines art and technology to bring about improvements in everyday urban life. Artek is a booming design brand today and the work of Aalto continues to be respected.
But while Aalto's useful elegance represents a certain Finnish sensibility, Finland is a country of conflicts, and one of its greatest is the disconnect between a characteristically shy national character and the brave innovators it has produced.
One such innovator is Armi Ratia, the energetic founder of Marimekko. Ratia founded the textile(纺织品)and fashion brand in 1951. Her ambition was to bring color and energy into the homes of the depressed postwar nation. Today it is hard to imagine the Finnish lifestyle without the energy of Marimekko. The brand was also symbolic of the equal role women played in Finnish society. Here they were leaders and innovators, creatives and commercial successes. Fashion designs were purposefully free and practical. Such was the interaction between the values of the brand and the values of the nation that spotting a Marimekko print on the street could be compared to seeing the Finnish flag flying.
A. Monster, Coca-Cola's energy drink partner, isn't excited with the plan. B. Pretty much every drink category is experimenting with making full use of energy sections. C. Coke recognized the importance of energy drinks when it struck a deal with Monster in 2014. D. By using natural ingredients and its recognizable brand, Coke may be going after consumers who wouldn't reach for a Monster drink. E. Recently, consumers have been looking for functional ingredients — like caffeine for energy — in everything from sparkling water to juice. |
Coca-Cola Launched Coke-branded Energy Drinks
Coca-Cola recently said it was considering adding a new drink, Coca-Cola Energy, to its list of Coke products.
Both companies have said that they value the relationship, but Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey is pushing for aggressive growth, and he's not afraid to upset some feathers.
The energy drink is one of the fastest-growing parts of the drink industry, and it's highly profitable because consumers are used to paying more for energy drinks than soft drinks. Plus, some people already drink Coke for caffeine. It's a natural brand extension.
That means that energy drinks compete with other types of drinks, and that people who may not seek out an energy drink may still be looking for an energy boost.
In that way, the new drink could serve as addition, rather than competitor, to Monster.
