In 1590, the GLOBE was built using wood from an earlier theatre, which had been built by Richard Burbage's father, James Burbage, in Shoreditch in 1576. The first performance for which a firm record remains was Jonson's Every Man out of His Humour—with its fist scene welcoming the "gracious and kind spectator""- at the end of the ear.
On 29h June 1613, the GLOBE Theatre went up in flames during a performance of Henry VII. A theatrical gun, set off during the performance, misfired, burning the wooden beams and straws. According to one of the few surviving documents of the event, no one was hurt except a man whose burning breeches (炮后膛) were put out with a bottle of beer. It was rebuilt in the following year.
Like all he other theatres in London, the GLOBE was closed down by the Puritns in 1642. It was pulled down in 1644, or slightly later — the commonly cited document dating the act to 15 April 1644 has been identified as false-to make room for other buildings. A modem reconstruction of the theatre, named "Shakespeare's GLOBE", opened in 1997, with a production of Henry V. It is an academic approximation of the original design, based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings, and is located about 750 feet (230m)from the site of the original theatre.
A fat man with a camera around his neck and a bottle of sunscreen cream sticking out of his bag, he really did look like a tourist. He sat on the terrace (平台), sipping lemonade and pretending to look at a tourism brochure. His sunglasses masked his eyes, but I knew he wasn't looking at the brochure: he hadn't turned a page for the last ten minutes. As I brought him his dishes, he coughed up a "thank you" and looked at me briefly I tried not to stare at the tiny scar across his left eyebrow.
I walked back inside with my empty tray, shaking my head. He looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place him. Then it hit me. The car accident. The mysterious stranger who helped me out of my crashed car, just before it exploded. I rushed back to his table. He was gone.
I moved his saucer and found his tip, along with a card: I am deeply grateful to you. The night of your car accident, I was on my way to rob a jewelry store. Saving your life brought things back in a right way. I now live an honest life, thanks to you. God bless you! Mr. D.
I shivered (震颤). The night of my car accident, I was heading for an interview in an illegal dance club. Seeing human kindness through his heroic gesture (英雄姿态) turned my life around and brought faith back into my life. I unfolded the tip he left. Among the singles was a grand (一千块) with a pen mark underlining "In God We Trust. "I said a silent prayer for him and got back to work, smiling.
Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction (破坏)of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals..., these problems seem so huge.
So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive.
But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?
I recently learned something about flamingos(火烈鸟)which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more Every year when the time comes for migration (迁徙), a few of them first take off from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice, so the small group returns. However, the next day they try again. This time a few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since the thousands of others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.
Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before, then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins. What a spectacular sight it must be--thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once!
A few can make a difference. Even if you're the one to take the first step, and continue trying, others will someday take notice and together we will solve even our greatest problems.
If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. So challenge the following limits:
1 Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.
If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you'll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. But don't stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eye and say, "Go on. I'm not scared!”
2 Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop.
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.
3 Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.
A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you keep your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
4 Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.
Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers—try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class.
A. Someone may hang up on you. B. You should do it continuously. C. You don't need to go to the gym. D. Running in the gym may be a better choice. E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself. F. Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop. G. You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone. |
In high school I had a math teacher, Mrs. Davies, who took her job seriously and expected her students to put forth the same degree of commitment. Strict but fair, she held our attention with her time-proven approach. One of her1was for students who were more advanced academically. I chose to2it and soon realized that the course was a bit over my head. I3with the complex problems that others seemed to learn without much effort.
One Friday we were tested4our ability to use a theorem(定理) that no one in the class thoroughly understood. The teacher would5our papers based on our ability to progress through the problem which easily filled two pages of formulaic notations(公式符号). I was absolutely lost. Finally, I didn't use the required theorem. Instead, I decided to use more familiar theorems to arrive at an6. I knew I had failed because I hadn't done the7assignment. I became resigned to my fate.
Our test papers were handed back the following Monday. Everyone received a "C” except for me. To my surprise, I received an "A”. I8that there must be a mistake. I watched9as the teacher approached my desk, smiled, and asked for my test paper back. She then went back to copy my work onto the blackboard,10the class how I had arrived at the correct answer. "Mathematics is meant to be a creative tool, pushing our minds to a rewarding answer,” she said with confidence.11I didn't use the required theorem, she seemed genuinely proud of how I'd worked through the problem. The class saw her fold my test paper and put it into her textbook. She announced that it would be12with future classes.
My teacher would have been justified in giving me a13grade. Instead, she used the14to deeply influence a student who often struggled. And after forty years, I still cherish the memory. It helped change my self-image. I15up to a broad boundary of possibilities which has made my life an adventure. She understood that teaching went beyond strict demands and could be used to inspire. Thank you, Mrs. Davies.
A hairstyle that looks similar to models of the new coronavirus has been gaining popularity in Kenya. The hairstyle creates long spikes(尖状物) move out across the head. Pictures (represent)the structure of the new coronavirus have shown spikes coming out of a round, outer surface.
One reason why the hairstyle is growing in popularity is it is less costly. This is more important now because many families are facing economic difficulties as a result restrictions(限制)meant to limit the spread of the virus. The restrictions have stopped daily work activities for mil-lions of people with little or no savings.
The coronavirus-influenced look is also being used by some Kenyans (rise) public awareness about COVID-19 the disease caused by the virus. The method used to make the corona-virus hairstyle (use)a common material for threading instead of produced hair products. The coronavirus hairstyle cost just 50 cents, (compare) to $3 to $5 for an average braided hairstyle.
Sharon Refa is hairdresser. Refa said some adults sill do not believe the coronavirus is real. most young children have been following guidelines to wear face masks and wash their hands often. She said she thinks the hairstyle can be one way to get parents to take coronavirs guidelines more (serious). "So many adults do not do this, and that is why we came up with the corona hairstyle," Refa added.
