In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly decided to choose a day to make people understand the importance of protecting wild animals and plants. ① They decided to call it World Wildlife Day and chose 3 March as the date to celebrate it.
Why is it so important?
Earth is home to many different species (物种) of plants and animals. As you know that humans are a kind of the species. So Earth is also vital to us. We need the air, the water, the food and the energy to live. Each species is important. World Wildlife Day tries to make people know these facts. ②
What problems is wildlife facing?
Sadly, many human activities such as hunting, farming and building are putting wildlife in danger. We are cutting down too many trees, clearing too much ground and building so many roads that we are destroying (破坏) the living space of wildlife. ③
What can you do to help?
You can join the local activities and raise money for groups to protect wildlife. You can also share photos about protecting wild animals with your friends and family. ④ When you do these things, you won't be alone. Millions of people are fighting for a better future for our Earth.

One day, I visited my friend Jack on a sheep farm in North America. Suddenly one sheep came to cry in front of us. She made the most painful(痛苦的) cries. Jack said,"Something must be wrong. Come on, Mike. Let's follow her."
Together we followed the sheep back to where she was feeding on the farm. She rushed forward and kept on looking back to see if we were coming. She finally took us to an old well (井) , and we heard the sad voice of her young baby that had fallen into the well. As the well had no water and was only six feet deep, we took a ladder(梯子) and climbed down. After a few minutes, the baby sheep was saved. The mother sheep looked happy with the successful (成功的) result of the accident. She came to tell us her trouble and got help. How amazing!
Dorat is a dog. He is buying cookies himself by paying(支付)for them with leaves.
The workers of a school in Colombia kept Dorat three years ago. Dorat can freely walk around the school's yard. Students would sometimes buy Dorat cookies at the school's store. After seeing students use money to buy food, Dorat thought (认为)that it was time for him to stop asking for cookies because he had a better plan. One day, he came up to the store with a leaf in his mouth, shaking (摇晃) his tail and letting people know that he wanted a cookie. "I felt very surprised and had to 'sell' him a cookie," "Gladys Barreto said.
Barreto works at the store. She said, "He comes every day for cookies and always pays with a leaf. "But Barreto lets Dorat buy cookies only a few times a month, mostly to make sure he doesn't get too fat.
Most people don't know about blobfish (水滴鱼). They are the world's ugliest animal.
Blobfish live in the sea near Australia and New Zealand. For most of time, they stay in the water between 600 to 1,200 meters deep. When some little fish swim past them, they try to catch them for food. They can grow up to 30cm long. They have very large heads, small bodies and thin tails. They look like a large jelly (果冻). So they get their names.
People don't eat blobfish, because they are not good for people to eat. But fishermen kill thousands of them each year when they catch other fish in the sea. Scientists are worried that this will put the blobfish on the list of animals in danger.
