A Chinese carpenter's traditional skills have become an unexpected Internet hit as he creates woodwork with a single piece of wood, without glue, screws or nails. Wang Dewen, known as "Grandpa Amu" on YouTube, has been praised as the modern day Lu Ban, a well-known Chinese structural engineer during the Zhou Dynasty, thanks to his rich carpentry(木工手艺)knowledge.
Grandpa Amu's most popular video, which shows him making a delicate wooden arch bridge, has gone viral on YouTube, gaining more than 40 million views. "If you do something, you have to love it, and you have to be interested in it; however, being interested doesn't mean there's only happiness and no pain. "Grandpa Amu shared when talking about his excellent carpentry skills.
His most popular works include a folding stool, a model of the China pavilion from the 2010Shanghai Expo, and an apple-shaped interlocking puzzle, known as a Lu Ban lock. Grandpa Amu follows an ancient Chinese mortise and tenon (榫卯)technique, which means no nails or glue are involved in the entire process of building the arch bridge.
The master carpenter has also made several wooden toys for his grandson using the same technique. His young grandson's favorites include a walking Peppa Pig and a bubble blowing machine. Attracting over 1. 17 million fans on YouTube, Grandpa Amu's videos so far have gained more than 200 million views.
His wonderful woodworking skills, using the same mortise and tenon joints found in the Forbidden City, were developed from the age of thirteen as a way of supporting his family in East China's Shandong Provincc. "The grandson is so happy, as there have been so many fine and unique toys made by grandpa from an early age, "commented one netizen; while another said "It's amazing. I hope these traditional crafts can be passed on!"
Almost everyone stood when the bride walked down the aisle in her white gown, but not the wedding conductor, because she was fixed to her chair.
The nuptial at this ceremony was led by "I-Fairy", a 4-foot(about1. 2-meter)tall seated robot with flashing eyes and plastic pigtails(辫子). Sunday's wedding was the first time that a marriage had been led by a robot, according to manufacturer Kokoro Co.
"Please lift the bride's veil(面纱), "the robot said in a tinny voice, waving its arms in the air as the newlyweds kissed in front of guests.
The wedding took place at a restaurant in Hibiya Park in central Tokyo, where the I-Fairy wore a wreath of flowers and directed a rooftop ceremony. Wires led out from beneath it to a black curtain a few feet away, where a man clicked commands into a computer.
Japan has one of the most advanced robotics industries in the world, with the government actively supporting the field for future growth. Industrial models in factories are now standard, but recently Japanese companies are making a push to inject robots into everyday life.
Honda makes walking child-shaped robots, and other firms have developed them to entertain the elderly or play baseball. Kokoro, whose corporate goal is to"touch the hearts of the people", also makes giant dinosaur robots for exhibitions and lifelike android models that can smile and laugh. The company is a subsidiary( 附属公司)of Sanrio Co. , which owns the rights to Hello Kitty and other Japanese characters.
"There is a lot of fun. I think that Japanese have a strong sense that robots are our friends. Those in the robot industry mostly understand this, but people mainly want robots near them to serve some purpose, "said bride Satoko Inoue, 36, who works at manufacturer Kokoro Co.
The I-Fairy sells for about $57, 000 and three are in use in Singapore, the U. S. and Japan, according to company spokeswoman Kayako Kido.
Lego is considering a brick(积木)rental plan in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. The Danish toymaker has promised to make all its bricks from sustainable(可持续的)materials by 2030 and is investing significant resources in finding alternatives.
Tim Brooks, vice-president responsible for sustainability, said the company was "totally open" to the idea of the product rental plan but admitted that lost pieces could produce a significant problem. "What are the chances of giving them to an eight-year-old child and getting them all back again?"Mr. Brooks added.
"There is a lot of technical thinking that needs to be done. We are right at the beginning. "Mr. Brooks said Lego was exploring several ideas with a view to producing the highest value from products while consuming the fewest resources. He said many would" probably never see the light of day" and that there is no current plan to try out the rental plan.
Lego has come under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint for growing international alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. It produces 19 billion pieces per year—36, 000 a minute—that are made entirely of plastic while much of the inside packaging is also plastic.
So far, the only breakthrough has been the development of a line of bricks made of plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. The green trees, plants and flowers were first included in Lego sets late last year but currently make up only 1%— 2% of total plastic elements produced. Henrik Nielson, a production supervisor(主管)in Lego's factory, said last year:" We need to learn again how to do this."
Lego reportedly releases around a million tons of carbon dioxide each year, with about 75% coming from raw materials that go into factories. The company has invested more than 100, 000, 000 euros and hired 100 people to research non-plastic alternatives. It is aiming to keep all of its packaging out of landfill by 2025.
Humans have been known to develop strong connections with dangerous animals. Werner Freund has spent several decades in the company of wolves. While why the former soldier became attached to these beautiful wild animals is a little unclear, he has been caring for them since 1972. The army experience leaves him a strong body and energetic state. .
They touch him with noses, and play with him. What's more, they are generally very submissive (卑躬屈膝的) when he is around, just like they would be around a head wolf!
This, however, does not happen by chance. Whenever it's feeding time, he calls his pack to come for the raw meat by howling. As the hungry animals rush to get their food, they always meet with this scene. Werner sinks his teeth into the raw meat first.
What may sound a little cruel is how the position of hierarchy(等级制度) is built in the animal world. When he signals, the rest of the pack can join in. Wemer's wolves know this rule quite well and never challenge his authority.
Wolves, the largest member of the dog family, are mistakenly believed to be dangerous.
They are beautiful gentle souls, whose reputation has been spoiled by fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood!
A. But in reality they rarely attack humans
B. They are considered as the smartest beasts.
C. Werner works on it with a simple act every day
D. Werner seems to know where wolves come from.
E. It is always the strongest male that gets the first meal
F. The wolves treat Werner as if he were one of their own.
G. Therefore, Werner can survive the wolves and get along with these cold-blooded creatures.
