A group of boys were in front of a rock-climbing cliff. "Why not1the cliff?" they said to each other, "Let's play a game. It will be2to climb up to the top!"
Their mothers wanted to know who could climb to the top first, so they were sitting not far away, looking at their children.
Then3game started. All the boys tried their best to climb up. In a short time, some children were ahead of others because they never stopped. One of the them is an4boy called David. In the end, he was the first boy to reach the top of the cliff.
5surprising it was! Nobody thought David could6the game, because he was the shortest child in the group. When his mother saw this, she7so proud. She asked him, "David, how did you reach the top of the cliff so quickly?"
"It was easy," David said. "8children kept looking down when they climbed. When they knew they were high up on the cliff, they were afraid of falling down.9I only looked up. When I saw l was close to the top, I encouraged10to go higher and higher until 1 reached it."
In our life, if we just keep going without looking back, we can achieve our goals more easily.
I have a neighbor. She is over 70 but she looks very1and beautiful. She can do all the housework by herself. She is able to2newspapers and learn something new on the Internet too. I often see her doing tai chi in the morning and dancing in the evening,
Last week a(an)3from a newspaper asked her how she kept so young. She answered, "I have a secret to stay young. It is quite4. Keep your mind active, be interested in the world around you, and5at least one new thing every day. Don't6you are too old to do that. I know a man. He7to study medicine in a college when he was 64 years old. He studied there for 6 years and now he works at the8of 71. Some people may think keeping learning is easy only for young people.9, everyone can make it."
Please tell this story to your family. It would be a good start to10the old woman's example. I hope everyone will stay young and healthy.
My Year Abroad
This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers' experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada-Tokyo |
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I'm not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned many English songs and lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my fiends all said that Thad improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future. |
Carla Fonseca - Rio de Janeiro |
I spent last year studying English in London. I'm from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I'm glad to be home! |
Alvin Chen - Hong Kong |
Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I'm really glad I went. |
Teachers play an influencing role in the life of every student. They are like light, guiding us to a bright future. What we learn from our teachers remains with us, throughout our life. However, we don't often show our love for them. Teachers do need encouragement and support. Because of this, Teachers' Day is celebrated all over the world, year by year.
The festival is celebrated on different dates in different countries. In India, Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5th of September every year. The date was selected, because it is the birthday of a teacher and the former President of India—Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. When some of his students and friends said they wanted to celebrate his birthday, he said, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, I hope September 5th can be celebrated as Teachers' Day". From then on, the 5th of September has been known as Teachers' Day in India.
Since Teachers' Day is on different dates in different countries; the celebrations are also different. In many countries, cultural programmes such as singing competitions are held. Students give their teachers flowers, greeting cards and gifts to show their thanks.
