I stood there listening to my father shout at top of his voice. The 1 on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.

"2 one of you did this?"

We all stared down at the step. There was child's handwriting in chalk there. I was very 3. I hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I 4, "Not me, Dad. "

The others denied(否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us 5 had done it. But as the 6 and smallest of the three, I just couldn't find the courage to tell the 7.

To find out who had written on the 8, father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil and said, "I want each of you to 9 exactly what you see on the step. "

I tried my best to write the words 10. I didn't want Dad to be able to tell it was me.

He gathered up our pieces of paper and looked at them. "Since 11 of you will admit(承认) to have done it, then I will punish you all. " I stood there and said 12. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me!

"I 13 it, " my sister stepped forward and said she had done something she hadn't. She was grounded(受处罚) for a month.

We didn't talk about that for many years. Not 14 we were all older and I knew it was safe to finally tell my dad it was really 15. I always felt sorry because of it. That was the last time I let someone take the blame(责任) for me.

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circle and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to. Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone asks me the way somewhere, I would say, "Sorry, I am a stranger here. "

Once on my way to work, I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for the direction. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!

    1. (1) The writer always refuses to give people directions because _________.
A . she is a stranger to the city B . she doesn't know the people C . she has no time to help others D . she's afraid of giving wrong directions
    2. (2) A man stopped the writer on the way to _________.
A . sell her something B . ask her the time C . make friends with her D . ask for the direction
    3. (3) The Friendship Building is the place where the writer _________.
      A . lives B . studies C . works D . teaches
    4. (4) The word "embarrassed" in the last paragraph means "_________".
      A . 尴尬的 B . 困惑的 C . 激动的 D . 拮据的
    5. (5) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . The writer is too shy to give others directions. B . The writer has a very poor sense of direction. C . The writer never got lost when she was young. D . The man was quite nervous when he saw the writer.

I travel a lot, and I find out different"styles"of giving directions every time I ask "How can I get to the post office?"

In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions because most streets don't have names. For example, the Japanese will say to travellers, "Go straight ahead and turn left at the hotel. The post office is across from the bus stop. "

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are no towns or buildings in many places. Instead of(代替)landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile. "

People in Los Angeles, California have no idea of distance. They measure (测量)distance in time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?"you ask, "Oh, "they answer, "It's about five minutes from here. "

It's true that a person doesn't know the answer sometimes. What happens in such a situation?A New Yorker might say, "Sorry, I don't know. "But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, "I don't know. "People believe in that"I don't know"is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

    1. (1) Why do Japanese people use landmarks in their directions?
A . Because they have no idea of distance. B . Because there are no towns or buildings. C . Because most of the streets have no names. D . Because people don't know the answer,
    2. (2) Which of the following may people in Kansas say?
A . "Turn left at the traffic lights and you will see a school. " B . "It will take one day and a half. " C . "Turn south and then walk 300 meters. " D . "Go along Autumn Street and turn right at the crossing. "
    3. (3) What may happen in Yucatan?
A . People there usually say, "Sorry, I don't know the way. " B . Local people often give a right answer. C . People there have no idea of distance. D . Visitors may lose their way.
    4. (4) What is the best title of the passage?
A . Asking the Way in Different Places B . Getting Lost in Yucatan C . Travelling in Different Places D . Where is the Post Office?

Different types of maps have different uses. Tourist maps, for example, have signs to show places of interest in an area. When tourists read these maps, it is easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place and it is easy for them to go and find their ways to these places.

Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to Wuhan, you just follow G70 Road and keep looking at the road signs.

Distribution maps (分布图) use colours or signs to show facts about an area, for example, where different languages are spoken, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or whether rice grows in certain places.

Some maps, such as railway maps, use straight lines to show everything. This is easy for people to read. Trains are fast. People don't have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips.

We have some exciting news for you. Jenny is going to have a baby!  At first, the doctor said she might have some trouble with the baby. Now he says she is just fine. She is very healthy and happy! She still works on her paintings every day.  She gets tired more quickly now.

We're moving to New York! We want to be closer to you and Jane. It's much nicer to be near the family. Jenny grew up in Mexico, and she doesn't have a family member here. So that makes you even more important to us.

Jenny is a little worried about working in New York.  In Italy, her paintings are already popular. But I'm sure people will like her in New York.  I'm still working for Times. I'll be writing about the United Nations in New York. We're planning to move house next month.

    See you then!

    Yours,

    Jim
