Americans think much about time.
From childhood(童年)they learn to value time. As children, they are taught to be on time to go to school, to work and to do everything else. When they are having a good time, they say that time goes easily. When a person is dying, they say he is living on a borrowed time.
Time is money. Time is knowledge. Time is everything in America. A working American has to work hard for eight hours a day or forty hours a week. This is the working time. In his free time, he also works hard for more money. Even on Saturdays and Sundays, he also works hard as usual. In the street you can hardly see men walking slowly. They walk very fast. In fact, they are running.
They love time because time can bring them money and lots of things. But sometimes they also hate time, because they feel they become servants (仆人) of the clock.
A long long time ago, two brothers lived in a village. They were both farmers and grew rice. The elder brother had many children to feed (养活), so he had very little money. The younger brother also had a big family to look after. Although the brothers were poor, they lived happily.
One year, there was a drought (旱灾)and the rice did not grow well. The brothers collected their small harvest and stored the rice in their barns (谷仓).
'One night, the elder brother could not sleep. He was worried about his brother. Would he have enough rice to feed his family? At last, the elder brother got out of bed. He went to his barn and filled a bag with rice. Then he went silently to his brother's house and secretly added(增加)the grain to his brother's.
Every night he did the same thing. He took some of his own rice and added it to his brother's store. But after a few days, he noticed something strange. His rice never looked smaller in the morning.
One night he decided to find out why. After it had got dark, he hid near his barn and watched. At last, a man approached with a bag of rice. At first, he did not know who it was. Then he was amazed to see his own brother. Every night the younger brother did the same thing—took rice from his own to give it to his brother.
It was true brotherly love.
