One morning Raman, a true master of the art of archery(箭术), invited his favorite student to watch a display of his skill. The student had1 this more than a hundred times before, but he still obeyed his2

"Every day, " replied his student. "And you have11 managed to hit the rose from three hundred paces away. "

Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr. Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr. Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr. Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in. "Gestures are all universally understood, " he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like "hello""thank you" and "I'm sorry, I don't speak your language. Do you speak English?" is a must, Mr. Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr. Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. "I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language, "he said.
If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten, my secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local cash with you when you arrive in a country. Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. "Listen! I only take real money!" the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing.
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

The millipede (千足虫)
Forest life
We enjoy watching television programs about bears, bats or monkeys. We knew a lot about their lives: how they find food or what they do at different times of the year. But what about smaller animals that are more difficult to see or film?
A French scientist, Francois-Xavier, Joly, is studying one of them — the millipede.
The importance of leaves
When leaves begin to die in autumn, they turn from green to yellow and fall from the trees.
Life in the forest needs these nutrients— without them, plants could not grow and so there would be no food for other animals.
Food on the forest floor
Some living things, like mushrooms, break the leaves into smaller pieces and eat them. In a few months there is nothing left of them. But for mushrooms, not all trees are the same.
Mushrooms prefer some types of leaves to others. This means that some leaves take much longer to break down than others, sometimes years. So what happens to these?
More on the menu
The millipede also likes leaves and it eats any type. But when it has finished, it produces waste. This waste then becomes the food of mushrooms. When mushrooms eat leaves they choose only certain types — But when they eat waste, they will eat any kind.
So next time you are walking through a forest, remember that something may be having a meal right under your feet!
A. This is where the millipede can help.
B. However, not all leaves are equally rich.
C. Millipedes do amazing things in the soil in our forests.
D. Forests are amazing places, and so are the animals that live in them.
E. As they break down on the ground, nutrients are returned to the soil.
F. Many small animals that live in forests are very important for the soil.
G. This is how the millipede turns dead leaves into food for others and helps life continue.
