Francesca was the best swimmer on the school team. She could swim a long way. She swam the fastest. She became captain ( 队长) of the team earlier this year, though she was the youngest. All the other girls wanted to be like Francesca. The biggest race of this year was this Friday. Francesca's team would compete with Leeward Middle. It was a strong team. Francesca was nervous (紧张的) in the days before the race. She couldn't eat or sleep well. She couldn't concentrate (集中精神) in class. All she could think about was how her team could win. On Wednesday afternoon, Francesca wasn't feeling very well. This was more than just being nervous. She visited the school nurse. The nurse took her temperature and checked (检 查) her throat. The nurse called Francesca's mom and sent her home. Francesca was sad. She caught a cold right before her big race! The race was very important for her school. What if she could not go? The next morning, Francesca woke up feeling better. Her mom kept her home from school all day so she could rest more.
On Friday after school, Francesca and her teammates did their best in the race. Her team won in the end. Francesca even set a school record (纪录)! It brought her great joy.
In the late 1990s, a New York City schoolteacher named Angela Duckworth found something surprising. In her math classes, some of the kids with lower IQ scores ( 低智商分数) were getting the highest grades, and some of the smartest kids were getting the lowest grades.
To try to solve this mystery (奥秘), Duckworth began to study different people. She asked people to rate ( 评 价) themselves — for example,"I finish whatever I start. " In another study, she asked people some questions such as, "Would you like to have a dollar now or two dollars tomorrow?"
From her studies, Duckworth got to know that successful people have some personality traits ( 个性特点) in common. First of all, they have self-control. A person with self-control can avoid distractions ( 避 免 分 心) and wait for something better to happen in the future. Secondly, they have"grit". People with grit work hard and don't give up. They stay with a piece of work even if it's hard, or if it takes a long time.
Is it possible to have self-control and grit? Duckworth believes so. One way is to follow the "Hard Thing"rule: choose something that is hard for you, such as learning a new language. Practice it every day, even if you don't like doing it. Don't give up! To be successful, you need to stay with it.
Dear Dr. Know, I'm so worried these days because I get pimples (青春痘). It causes many problems. I feel embarrassed when I enter the classroom because all my classmates look at me in surprise. Some students even laugh at me. I don't want to communicate with anyone. I have to be the first one to get into the classroom and the last one to leave. And I become stressed out and can't fall asleep at night. What should I do? Please write to me. I'm looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Sad and Fourteen |
Dear Sad and Fourteen, I'm so sorry to hear that you are worried about pimples. I'm also sorry that I can't stand beside you to share your stress. At first, you should know that getting pimples is quite normal in your age. Congratulations! It shows that you have grown up. Secondly, you don't need to care too much. You can tell your classmates your problem directly and I think they will understand you. Thirdly, if you pay more attention to other things, like studying or outdoor activities, maybe you will find more fun. What's more, you can ask the doctors for some medicine. I hope things will work out and everything will be better for you soon. Yours sincerely, Dr. Know |

"A child with a mother is like a treasure(珍宝). "
When you were a baby crying all night, your mom sang to you and stayed by your side. When you were tired, When you fell and hurt yourself, she gave you a hug(拥抱)and lifted you up. When you didn't get what you wanted, when you were sad, when. . . your mother was always there to help you. She is mother who is common and wants nothing in return at all.
Among all the mothers, we are deeply moved by the two mothers. Wang Yaping is the first Chinese woman to live in the Tiangong station and the first female(女性)Chinese space-walker(太空行走者). (cook) should be the most basic living skill for humans. However, there are many kids who are used to being fed and taken care everywhere, like " little emperors and little princesses". They can't tell the (different) between food materials.
In order to stress(强调) the (important) of hard-working spirit education among the students, the Community Party of China Central Committee recently released(发布)the guidelines. The guidelines call on students to respect labor(劳动)work. Students should learn basic life skills and develop good working(habit)through such education.
Students will be required(要求)to understand and master the basics of home cooking from preparing vegetables to finally being able to complete the whole process of home cooking (independent). These will be lifelong skills for kids, helping (they) develop into well-rounded individuals(个体), not just students who are able to take exam.
As children's (one)teachers, parents should also encourage children to learn how (do) chores at home. Students should master one or two life skills every year.
It's really important for students (receive) labor education both at school and at home.
We may get used to communicating with people whom we know. But how can we communicate with strangers? Here are some methods (方法) that can help you with it.
We often underestimate (低估) how much others like us when we first talk to them. We often imagine how we will make a first impression (印象) on strangers, which makes us feel less confident. In fact, we are not as boring as we think! What we should do is to be confident and brave to communicate with others.
There's always the weather, but when you find what you have in common, you will have a lot to talk about. You can share something they never know to make them excited. It is a good way to develop a relationship if you want to know more about one another.
Smile is a sign to tell others that you are kind and warm, which will leave a good impression on others. There is no more powerful tool than smile to shorten the distance among people.
Watch for signs that if he or she might prefer to be left by himself. Communication is meaningful only when both sides are willing to talk.
